The sad thing is nothing one says in arguments like changes the "kill 'em all" attitude of people on either side - not even what some slashdot readers think about the situation. Yeah I know people get angry when someone they love, or genrally care about in some way, gets killed by someone from the other side who is proclaiming he is doing his side proud by being a cowardly pig. The problem comes when people from the supposedly "civilized" parts of the world start propagating the doctorine of 'kill if anyone raises the flag we hate, blow up the building that has the poster we hate, bomb the city/village in the country we hate, nuke the bastards who worship the same religion as the morons we hate'
How different are YOU actually from the people you say are the worst scum of the society ?
I read TFA and I was a bit confused. First, I was not sure about where exactly this software is going to be installed
The ISPs of the persons under investigation will then slip the program onto their computers.
This seemed to be saying that it will be installed on the ISP's end which seemed like not such a big deal as ISPs monitor the network data to some extent anyway
The wiretap has some additional functions. For example, the built in microphone on a laptop can be turned on to monitor a room or webcams can be activated. As the latter is usually indicated by an LED, this is unlikely to be useful in practice.
Now it seems more likely that it will be installed on the target's computer. Now it is a spyware. I think it can be compared to planting microphones in the house of a suspect. And they will need a judge's permission before they do it which seems like a sensible thing to do. But unlike a microphone planted in the house, a spyware/trojan can interact with the data on the other end. So what happens when a person discovers this program installed on his system and sues the government for some credit card/personal information stealing (which may or may not have happened) ? I know he is a suspect but the fact that they needed to plant a spyware on his system means that they did not have enough evidence to refute his claims by saying that he is a terrorist or dangerous criminal and get away with the charge easily. This all is ignoring the fact that the program ever makes to the hands of the Black Hat community (which is inevitable as already mentioned by a lot of people).
He can atleast argue that installing a spyware in his system made it insecure in some way which led to the theft or something to this tune. I don't know the technicalities of the software in question but I am sure the judges won't exactly be experts in this domain either.
Same here! Longest Yard with nightmare keel. The best way to get the adrenalin pumping and feel fresh and ready to get on with the work in less five minutes! - which is less than the time it takes my system to even load up quake 4!:)
India has a right (and perhaps legal duty) to prevent undesireable material from entering the country. The Internet is not a free pass around Customs.
India != A small group in power.
The key words are clandestine usage and abuse. Think about it before you let the defensive posture get the better of your senses.
..and just when you get to this part of the comment, 13 women across the world will be having orgasms, 25 kids will be trying to see the nude pic on a magazine cover and 1 million men will be thinking about sex. So.. what the fuck does that have to do with the data sold in Indian Call Center ?
A real scientist would have let the lions out of the cage before making any observations.
Exactly. Not only out of the cage but in a sufficiently open and 'jungle-like' wild & natural environment before even trying to observe their natural behaviour. Now do you understand what I was trying to say or do you want me to go all medieval on your ass !
Maybe the birds were getting those drowsy sessions and 'power naps' BECAUSE they were caged and being subjected to go through utterly boring and long observation periods when they would rather be flying over the ocean somewhere. Or they just closed their eyes every few minutes to curse the researchers to hell for caging them in the first place.
But seriously, studies of this kind tend to lose credibility when they start predicting the free behaviour of species while testing them under captive conditions. Going by this logic, I can say that lions in jungle start rattling the nearest metal bars or objects they can find when they feel hungry because I observed this behaviour in a bunch of lions in the nearest zoo. I know its stretching the point a bit, and that 'some' behaviour show consistence irrespective of the state of the subject animal/bird, BUT trying to deduce migratory behaviour (out of all things) from a bunch of observational data collected from birds in cages is stretching it too far IMHO.
I agree with you to an extent. Surely people will cry foul if you put a block of gold in the two boxes but lets assume that this technique gets refined to the extent where we are able to manipulate individual combinations of elctrons, protons, neutrons and all the rest of sub-atomic particles (or atleast the ones important for any particular test subject). Then would you still cry foul if instead of another block of gold in the second box, there is nothing but air in the second box to begin with and the conjurer was able to 'tell' the ingedients to reassemble to resemble the block of gold in the first box ?
There is no trasported on the recieving end where captain kirk gets beamed to but there its not like there is 'nothing' there.
I think its a mixture of both. We do get more easily excited about names we are familiar with than the prospect of experimenting with something we know nothing about. But then there is the aspect of 'belonging' which comes into play too. We will be biased towards a particular sequel if the orginal game really clicked for us - meaning we are more inclined to forgive its minor weaknesses and screw-ups than say a new game with similar problems for which we usually tear it down to shreds. Thus the factor of actually 'liking' the sequel gets a bit blurred.
Take for example the mario or star wars series. Not saying the sequels were crap or anything but a lot of them sold out because the fans were ready to forgive and overlook things which would have annoyed them to hell in any other game. Or simply they lowered their repetition/boredome/crap filters down a bit because those sequels gave them a sense of belonging and it was worth more to try to enjoy that path down the memory lane than to try to nitpick on things usually reserved for other games.
Someone up in the discussion made a beautiful analogy regarding games' sequels with books' sequels/more books by same author. I think it hits pretty close to the mark. You are more likely to feel you 'can' enjoy sequels of books you loved or more works by the same author because its easier to 'get' what the author is trying to say after you have loved one of the earlier books. Not saying its always the case but, more often than not, it is true. [One notably excepttion for me was the 'Rama' series by Arthur C. Clarke. I loved the first one, kind of enjoyed the second one but somehow lost interest midway through the last one. Maybe it was the fact that the sequels tried to leave nothing to the imagination which turned me off, or maybe it was the sort of religious undertones which seemed to be creeping into a perfectly original story.]
I can understand the point being raised but as someone already pointed out, they really messed up a potential good point by generalizing too much and by putting watching tv and playing video games in the same category. I have always been a grade A student and also heavily involved in sports activities AND a video games lover (yeah go figure!). I remember the days when me and my brother used to save all the money we could just so that we can play mario, contra and all the rest of the gang at a local game parlor - school day or not. Now the only effect that has on my studies was that I spent some time imagining mario jumping over the teachers head from over the tube-light in the corrner while I pressed the imaginary 'B' button. But it was fun and gave me respite from a long successsion of boring lectures sometimes. Now I was aware of the fact that homework has to be done and had a genuine interest in things being taught so totally losing interest in studies was out of question. My brother actually did better than back when he was not into video games! He knew finishing the work made him free to do the things he really wanted to do.
So yeah, I can understand the point if someone lets his child play video games from the time he/she comes back from the school to 2 a.m. everyday but saying that playing video games on school days is by default wrong and definitely affects the performance is a horrible generalization. Oh and IMHO watching tv excessively has more potential of making you dumb (a dangerous generalization..I know!) no matter what your age because its totally a passive medium. Putting it in the same category as video games is just biasing the whole study as a lot of people have negetive feelings towards the idiot box.
If the student is not doing well in the school then just blaming his playing video games is turning a blind eye to a lot of other stuff which may be affecting his performance. I am sure they never studied the effect a gang of bullies has on the performance of a meek but intelligent kid when he is harassed everyday because it will put the school authorities in the box for not paying enough attention to their own students. They never considered the possiblity that there may be something wrong or the student may be unconfortable with something in the home and that is why he is turning to this virtual escape excessively because it will point a fingure towards the parents. I am not blaming the school or the parents of being the cause of decline in the performance of the student in every case but just trying to say that try not to blame the most obvious and easiest thing whenever a student starts screwing up in studies. Most of the times its more than video games and watching tv which is making him lose interest in the school.
Hehe that one could have got me fired because I laughed out so loud my boss sitting at the other end of the office was wondering who the hell is enjoying the office work!
Its hard to take a website seriously when it writes things like [Hot-foot computing]:
Foot-twisting can be used for right or left mouse clicks and sliding one foot over the ground can be translated into dragging and dropping. This would allow someone to use a wearable computer while keeping their hands free for other tasks.
Don't know about you but after reading that I could 'see the invisible aircraft' in a new light.
Well said. Though I think there is another aspect of why the hip-hop/rap thing did not get so much OPEN negative publicity. It may sound a bit NPC but the whole hip-hop/rap culture is generally associated with the black community and no politician or major public figure would risk commenting openly against it for the fear of being dubbed a racist. OTH calling games the reason for their sons/daughter indulging in sex/violences/whatever accomplishes two goals - It absolves them of the responsiblities of the actions of their children by providing a proverbial witch to be burnt at stake, plus it there is no obvious race/culture/demographic attached with the games so they can curse it all they want without fear of repercussions from potential voters etc.
I honestly don't know what to make of the current situation. It is really easy for me to imagine all old ignorant hags sitting in the position of power and trying to restrict my choices/actions/thoughts for monetary, power or whatever reason but then it may happen that when our generation comes to that stage and have the same kind of power in our hands, we may end up trying to restrict something which (some of us atleast) genuinely feel is wrong but is really popular with the younger generation. Oh well, I just hope the concept of karma works. Will suck really if things don't balance out in the long run.
And I find this kind of generalisations more than a bit tiring:
Ooh Japan builds super-strong robots to help the hospital nurses => cute japs !!111
Some (supposedly) americans thought about military use as soon as they heard about it => WTF!!!11 sick-death mongering-carnage loving-americans !! You guys are soooo brainwashed !
Just relax. If something stimulates the imagination then it is bound to be talked about. I am sure this power suit has its origin in some kid's dream who wanted to have super strength to beat up all the bullies or simply to be a superhero. Not every idea which has its origin in the quest for power is without possibilitis of constructive use. Countless people have been inspired by sci-fi books and movies which depicted wars/fights/gadgets used for general fighting and violence but a lot of them ended up creating something which helps the weakest sections of humanity to this very day.
[for the hyper sensitive]No I have no particular feeling for or against Japanese,Korean, Mongolians, Americans or humans in general.
Picture this technology on a screen that's wrapped around the outside of a cylinder. You could have an information kiosk that has a different image for every person that's standing around it. If the images were that of a virtual tour guide, the guide could point things out in 360 degrees, yet it would still be tailored for each person looking at the screen.
I understand what you are saying but there seems to be a few problems with that particular application:
1. (Obviously) It will only work in the case of a dynamic display - I mean if the images are not changing over time then its as good as a poster wrapped around a cylinder at 1000 times the cost.
2. For multimedia displays, you will have still get a less than expected cap of how many different types of displays can be run at a time because of minimum width required for them to make sense and the distinct boundary problems which will be there when you are standing somewhere near the zone where two different displays are intersecting. So to make a cylinder show 6 different tv channels at the time, you will need a cylinderical screen with really LARGE diameter which - coupled with the cost of making a special screen like this - will cost more than simply putting up 6 different screens. (maybe the cost factor will go down once they are produced commercially, who knows)
3. If the screen gets defective then it will mean ALL the different virtual screens will/may be affected, thus increasing the nuisance factor.
What is even more interesting is that they have a "no photo available" at sylvia saint page. I mean.. come on ! She is a freakin' porn star and you have no photo available ! Just admit that the editors keep removing the pics to add to their personal collection ! Or maybe keeping her pics online was too much for their servers to handle as it was attracting a significant chunk of the porn traffic !
If in real life, practicioners of a certain profession who are of a certain race have two magical skills unique to their race that members of other races cannot learn, is it racist to make hiring decisions based on those magical skills?
...in real life... magic skills.. did I miss anything ?
On a serious note, I don't think your example of picking dwarfs over night elves even comes close to being a case of racism. Just because someone picks dwarfs over night elves (or vice-versa) doesn't mean that he/she is a racist. What if he has a dwarf fetish ? or a Nightelf fetish ? or he likes how the term 'night elf' somehow sounds like 'sexy female elfs walking in night' or.. erm.. you get the point right.
How about a same race scenario, mario and luigi can both stomp over ducks and stupid sliding thingies with equal ease but I would prefer to play with mario rather than luigi if given a choice. Does than mean I hate plumbers wearing stupid fuckin white jump-suits and trying to act like they are as cool as their twin brother...hmm.. come to think of it.. I actually do. Screw Luigi! That fuckin' poser !
I know it really apppeals to the 'for-freedom' type of people (or whatever is the right term) that ideas belong to the humanity as a whole and should not be kept in kept out of reach from other people who can possibly create something out of it for the betterment of the world in some way.
I really believe in that too but can someone help me understand what happens if tomorrow the software patent system is totally revoked and all the algorithms/source codes and such are made open for others to use - how does someone who codes for a living feeds himself ? I mean why would someone pay me to write a piece of software when the company can not market it for a minimum period of time without others building something exactly similar to it and releasing it at cheaper price or possibly free. Why would anyone even think about buying any piece of software ? In old days some emperors etc. took exceptionally brilliant people under their care (some atleast) but that is not going to happen now. How many brilliant (software) people government can afford to pay a monthly sum to make sure they have some drive to come up with new ideas and not die of starvation in the process?
Perhaps I am totally missing some point here but working only for ideologies without a care of money is not something mere mortals can do. Would Isaac Newton and Einstein have done the work they did if they were dying of starvation or if they had to work at some place which asked them to put in ~50 hrs a week on back breaking work along with their research ? Public donation as a sign of gratitude is out of the question. How many of us actually donate to the authors of softwares which we use everyday for free (legally or illegally)?
I understand your point about every orbital needing a minimum/maximum tangential velocity to keep anything in that particular orbit. What I was trying to say (and messed up) was that the angular velocity of anything in geo-stationary orbit has to be equal to that of earth because (correct me if I am wrong) that is what it does by definition - keeps hovering over a particular spot thus besically moves along with it. So if something is launched from, say an equatorial region - and along the rotational direction of earth - then, given a particular tight range of initial velocity, the object should be able to fit in one of the geostationary orbits without needing any sort of tangential velocity being applied via boost rockets or anything.
The sad thing is nothing one says in arguments like changes the "kill 'em all" attitude of people on either side - not even what some slashdot readers think about the situation. How long before the robots start telling each other the same thing?
The key words are clandestine usage and abuse. Think about it before you let the defensive posture get the better of your senses.
If they're so smart, why do they live in igloos?
spelling maybe? I got the first two results for Parklane park as:
:: Parklane Park
Tree at Parklane Park on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Parklane Park - Portland - Reviews of Parklane Park - TripAdvisor
Portland Parks & Recreation
And that is without any quotes or anything. Or were you looking for some other Parklane park?
