What part of the entire state of MN does your family live in? Since this article mostly refers to the metro area of Mpls/St. Paul, I can safely call bullshit on your anecdote. I live a few blocks from a stretch of Minneapolis aptly named "Eat Street" and I literally could not swing a cat without hitting a restaurant/eatery/gastro pub (whatever the place calls itself...) that proved you wrong. That said, I have family out in Glencoe, MN and the ffod choices out there do tend to fall into the bland meat & potatoes category. But even Glencoe has a good Chinese restaurant that does more than sweet and sour and an awesome Mexican food truck.

As an AC pointed out Snowden's raw leaks being made public didn't stop reporters from selling stories on that information. I'm just calling bullshit on this idea that FOIA requests being published publicly automatically...will somehow hurt any reporter's story. If they're worried about another reporter poaching the info and publishing before them, they need to be better at their job. Have all the background written up and ready to go by the time the FOIA is being filed, then pull an all-nighter to finish the story when it comes out. Simple.

I do think car commercials and the like played on the big screen before a film is bullshit and one of the reasons I don't go as often as I used to. Commercials between T.V. shows is another fact of life, but not on HBO or Showtime etc. That's what this is most like, but right now since it's just previews for Netflix originals it's not much worse than HBO previewing their other shows for 20seconds before streaming on HBO GO*.
