I think there are laws against straight-up volunteering. But trying to get in at, say, $8/hour for high level work? I don't see that happening. Maybe if it's an experimental project. Does that ever work?
I'd work for free if it helps me network enough to get a good permanent job.
Using it during school or for personal projects counts. Just apply! Don't be discouraged by anything. If it's really a longshot, don't spend much time on cover letters. But putting your name in the hat never hurts.
Well, I tried to do riddles when I was hiring at a technology company. I liked to do mathematical ones that couldn't show any cultural bias. For example, deriving the quadratic formula. Or proving that the square root of two is irrational.
I like this. It's a lot better than the usual asking for "ten years in a five year old language". Cool trick too. I wonder how many people won't even get to the "view source" option!
Some of the most brilliant stuff I've ever read on the internet had a -1 Overrated on it. I think that's the god-modding by the editors--who seem to have a huge conservative streak.
Cropped movies are a BAD thing. Theatrical movies are much wider than 4:3. I stopped watching "pan & scan" movies a long time ago. The idea is that a human tries to scan left and right to get the right shot. Of course, things don't always go well. I got sick of people talking who I couldn't even see! Unless the movies are in widescreen--I'm not interested.
I tried this thing once and was kicked out for not being cool enough. It all seemed too social to me, even. Well, I'm a committed transhumanist who wants to become a Jupiter brain. Does that make me a nerd again?
They came up with this for SACD, and that went all of nowhere. You could use the same disc for CD players and SACD. I think the SACD was just a DVD layer anyway. Thanks probably more to licensing than manufacturing costs.
To me, the biggest question by far, is if it had financial motivations. If it had no financial motivation (not even a donate link), then that is a far different question. Just like copying a CD for your friend is a lot different than selling the copies on the corner.
Some people look at graphics and CPU and note that consoles seem kilomteres ahead. Consider RAM--consoles will never have tons of gigabytes of space. Or hard disk space--for that matter. And despite all the cell's cores, we'll have more cores with PC's. SLI will never go into consoles as well.
For the top end (yes, some gamers do have money), it's PC.
I took two separate (rather poorly done) PERL scripts and combined them into one ruby script. Changing languages helped me understand the code better.
I thought most optimized code is flattened out--these RETs can really kill CPU efficiency with all the tweaks the latest processors have.
Penrose had a different solution in his book, "Road to Reality". I like this one, though.

The point is deriving. I don't care if anyone memorized it.

Ech, doc. Apparently they are not as progressive as it seems.

Bash any of these and get godmod-nuked to negative karma.
Then the resolution drops to 640*400 or whatever the particular aspect ratio is. So much for "four times the resolution of the iPod".

I'm guessing they are waiting on Vista.

Word for word? Talk about /. groupthink. Yeesh. Oh and I'm first and get modded down; meanwhile you post the exact same thing and get modded up. OK.
We'll fight back! Anyways, the physical SACD layer was indeed DVD. The bits on it may have been represented something other than DVD-video!
According to wikipedia (LOL), there are hybrid discs that have a CD layer and a SACD layer.
Just a little knowledge of engineering/physics results in all this smart-ass (from the slashdot faq) stuff.

Please reread what I said. Carefully.

And yes, I'd like my karma points.
Come on, I thought we are atheists here at /. . At least note that it's "mythical".
More like, "o..."
