Now I know why I stopped reading slashdot.

Microsoft has been installing plugins in firefox for a long time... so has Adobe, google (picasa), Apple(quicktime, itunes) and others. What freaks me out is how this issue is blown out of proportion for the wrong reason.

ClickOnce is similar to Java's webstart technology for those who understand Java and you can get more information here
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163973.aspx

If you let java do it, and apple do it and apple do it why are you so surprised that microsoft is doing it ? Is it because its part of Office suite ? And how is that different from Picasa or itunes ?

The cities where these outsourcing companies work from are not 14 miles away from traffic lights and not 50 miles from a starbucks like coffee shop. Its hard to see how a computer savy group can live without computer shops around, without the modern amenities and most importantly without coffee !!

Thats not true. Dell supports console redirection... but there are no option in RH to allow an installation using Console redirection (without ks.cfg). I can see the bios bootup... the memory tests... then everything goes away when RH starts up the setup.

BTW the part about 1650 is true in my case. It quits with an error saying "Cannot probe monitor"... or something like that. I tried multiple monitors... even without any monitor... but it just doesnt work. I tried using "nox" option in kickstart too. Spent a day before I gave up and used and older version RH 7.2 instead which works fine.

  9. Its not easy to remote manage hardware like SUN on What High End Unix Features are Missing from Linux? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The only reason why I still would go for Sun hardware instead of Intel with Linux on it is because of ease of maintainance without investing a lot of getting third party cards installed which is non standard.

This is not a high end feature... but a feature critical enough for many corporate organizations to avoid linux.

The other think I love about Sun is the ease of Jumpstart. I always have issues with kickstarts on linux. RH8 doesn't even boot up on Del 1650s leave alone kickstarts. Sun puts a lot of effort in testing. I can't promise anything to my management without first testing it out on linux.... on Sun however, I believe them when they say XYZ version of software runs on SUN Hardware :)

Its not a big deal... and since both hardware and software belong to sun some would claim that I shouldn't even bring this issue up. But the fact is that these are two good reasons I don't enjoy linux in my corporate network, even though I love and run linux everywhere else possible.

  10. MacOS X and linux on "Seamless" Integration of Mac OS X w/ Active Directory · · Score: 2, Interesting

If someone can make this work with MacOS, I'm sure linux/unix is not far away. Solaris supports LDAP and I'm sure so do a lot of other Unix os... and the fact that Active Directory can be accessed using LDAP queries does make you wonder why we don't have any linux/unix server connecting to Active directory as of today.

Active directory, just like any other MS stuff likes to maintain its own standards and its hard to get inside documentation on it on the web.

Solaris LDAP and linux LDAP implementations have a lot of problems. Its just not ready for Enterprise class networking. I sat on a simple netgroup bug for months before SUN came out with a patch. And linux doesn't even support netgroup as cleanly as Solaris yet.

Its a pain.... if MacOS X can solve all these hiccups ( and if they do manage to come out with a documentation) I'm sure it will inspire the other Unix environments.

this is soo lame... black-boxes are good only untill its broken into... then there is a flood of holes.

"Many people have faulted the patching process itself for the low uptake rate. Fair enough - we
do need to make it easier for users to keep their systems secure, and Microsoft acknowledged this
very point in a recent major security announcement. But if the current methods for protecting systems
are ineffective, it makes it doubly important that we handle potentially destructive information with care. "

The microsoft Patches were released months before any of the Exploits/worms hit the net. Killing the messenger
is not gonna be any fun. When Intrusion analysts get a attack signature which they don't know about, they will panic
and probably be more distructive if they don't know what they are dealing with. Sometimes the only way to get this
info to the Analysts is by discussing the problem on mailing lists like bugtrac.

  18. Layoffs and shortage on No Shortage Of Programmers? · · Score: 3

There are two seperate concerns here

1 The Myth of Shortage : Considering the current layoff situations all over the tech industry, it can be argued that the shortage was a myth just like the myth of making money in Dot-Com. Unfortunately the first myth was fueled by the second myth.

2 Are H1 workers being paid equally It is also true to some extent that Organizations do indeed try to negotiate a lower wages for an H1 employee. But let me be very very clear that this problem is more due to legal problems of an H1 worker imposed by the Goverment which gives little or no room for a H1 employee to bargain for anything more.
    a) To change a simple job from one organization to another is a process which used to take 4 months before. Thanks to a new regulation earlier this year, an employee can start working on the new job as soon as he/she gets a confirmation number of receipt of the application by the INS (instead of waiting for the complete process which takes 4 months now). However this process has to be completed before an employee leave the first company. If an employee is fired/layed off, he goes out of status and has to leave the country immediately (legally speaking)... If he does leave he can return only after the complete 4 month process, or he has to take the risk of being found as an un-authorized alien and continue living here waiting for the reciept to return from INS. (INS has been a little leniant here lately for which many people are greatfull )
    b) However, if the employee starts working, and the application is rejected after 4 months, the employee is out of status and has to leave the country immediately...
    c) When companies apply for H1 and GreenCard they regularly ask the employee to sign contracts to force the employee to work for the organization for a period of time untill they can recover their lawyer fees. Unfortunately none of those contract mention that if that employee is kicked out of the company against his will, he would have a huge financial losses if he had to leave the country to avoid being out of status.

And these are only few of the problems a H1 employee face. How do you think you would react to the same situation ?

Personally I believe that just like any other open market, the job market should be wide open so that the myth can die for once and for all. Once there are lesser restrictions on H1 empolyees, the cost of these employees will go up and it would bring in only those people who are really required in the industry.

Most of the Myth is introduced in this industry my "body shoppers" who are middleman between companies and employees. Take away the reason why they exist... and let the market decide the course of action.
