Sure, Sherlock. What is next? Maybe MS will start a nuclear war to destroy the evil Linux empire? How can people just vomit words just when they here the word Microsoft? Ignorance? Perhaps.
MS cannot change DX calls. DX is implemented atop of COM technology wich means that what is done is done. The interface cannot be changed. If changed, it will then be a new version, call it DX13 , whatever... but the current version interfaces cannot be changed. Whatever, here is the word again: Microsoft... keep vomiting words without thinking.
Another guess and pray system. Please don't. or at least make it optional (not that I use ubuntu, but)... Guess and pray system are often more of an irritation that usable.
The CBC story is missing some details. The conviction was only secured against the man because of eye-witness statements that confirmed a 2006 BMW M5S was travelling at a very high rate of speed on the street in question.
His bragging alone would not have secured a conviction. There was also evidence that on the same car forum the man was claiming that he was smoking pot and driving on a different occasion. This however, could not be confirmed and charges were not pursued.
Yes, those where the infamous Optiplex GX270. We had 35 of those at work and 6 of them died a painful capacitor dead. One day after every death we had a guy from Dell replacing the main board for us, no questions asked. We are still very happy Dell customers, even today.
I have one of the new IdealPads with face recognition. The computers are gorgeous and face recognition works well. The first thing I tried was to print a photography of mine with good quality on a 4 arc of paper to see if i could fool the program to think that it was the real me. It didn't work, so I think it's ***reasonably*** secure.
I always buy the first release of everything I like (Windows 7, Visual Studio 2010, World of Warcraft, Android Phone, you name it) and patch later. Happy as a hyena.
OK, I fucked my post out... many people are screaming because evil MS now have forums. Another half is crying because evil MS did not implement forums earlier. Great!
I'll better post about how come evil slashdot doesn't allow post editing, year 2010. What's this, Usenet?
It IS scary because extremes are always bad. Yes, it sounds politically correct here on/., privacy, bla bla bla, but when you just are going to extremes like the need of encrypting *public* and easily available information like, say the name of a person, which is also available (with even more details) in your favorite telephone directory, you are not being "good". You're being ridiculous.
I understand the need of encrypting credit card numbers, etc, but too much is too much.
In Sweden it is illegal to publish any information about who the owner of a vehicle is, for example. Yet, it is perfectly legal to send a SMS to the traffic authorities to get the same info. Go figure.
Unfortunately (or not) I think it's only a matter of time until Google Earth gets killed. I mean, with more and more resources being put on Web-browsers speed, canvas painting, accelerated graphics, etc, why they'd want to maintain just *another* binary application which needs to be, platform aware, needs installation, client updates, etc?
Now seriously, I've read that all this migration has cost MILLIONS from public fonds and there are rumors that some heads are going to to roll soon because of this. In the university I am working for some IT-boss though it was a great idea to replace a well working First Class conferencing system that had been working GREAT for years by the Open Source Sakai. Well, the results: several millions have been wasted in this, there are (maaany) problems with the new platform, teachers hate it, students hate it... The "brilliant" IT chef is now working somewhere else after that disaster.
a) While all you say is more or less true, that applies to big well known OS projects only. Obscure little one/two man projects don't have that big of a peer review. If those projects have few users, you can live with critical security holes for years without then even being known.
b) Extra large OS projects have the chaos factor against them. When a security hole is patched on some Linuz distro: where does this apply? On Ubuntu? Is this present on Kubuntu as well? What about Redhat? What about my own forked distro that I distribute?
Well, I don't know if this is a "port", but both Lego Star Wars games run fine in any platform I've tried, without showing any signs of foreign idiosyncrasy.
Tell that to my 6 y.o.s son who is (as many of his school friends) obsessed with SW . It may be dead for you and the other bunch for which the new films didn't correspond the pink-colored idealized image of what the franchise must be in their brains. I liked the old films since I saw them back in the 70-80s. I immensely enjoyed the new ones as well. Ok, they may not be perfect (nor were the old ones), but I take them as what they are: escapist comic films for my enjoyment.... And now a whole new generation is learning to love those films as well...
News for nerds? Oh well. Am I the only one who things that/. is featuring too many articles on politics lately? At least net neutrality and such are somehow a little bit nerdy, but THIS?

No. If you SEE it going supernova tomorrow, then it already "happened" millions of years ago, so you will feel the effects directly (if any).

Masked under a cool CSI-like facade... Next....

OMFG!!! Slashdot doesn't have a usenet group!!!!!!

Oh, shit, I was going to buy a Sony Cybershot tomorrow... What a pity.. Eh, wait a minute, I WILL buy it tomorrow.

Good and relevant, but definitely not on slashdot. We prefer to ignore those bits of information.

Exactly, let's force them solve this problem with a .000000001 floating point precision. After all, this is a critical issue.

There, fixed that for ya.

I'll go outside. And have fun with my Natal as well. Double fun.
Thats Because Slashdot Thinks It's Cool To Capitalize The First Letter of Every Word. There, I'm Hip Too!
Key, then, to learning JQuery this book is.
