And this boys and girls is what is wrong with (many of) this Open Source/Free generation individuals. People expect free things and if they don't get it, then they feel they have the right to insult the hard work of other people that have been, oh, so naive to think that they are really helping with drivers, education, or you name it. And the funny thing is, when you ask those same rabid individuals, what have YOU done for the community, the answer invariabily is: you don't know me, so don't judge me...
And here we are. And it's getting worse day by day.
Hmm.. did they forget to thank? It's quite common to cry about this and that... when the only think needed is to shut your mouth and THANK for the little help.
Sorry to rain on your parade but Apple has ALWAYS been more closed that MS ever was.
Did you forgot their happy lawyers suing everyone using Mac themes on PCs back in the 90s?
Or they, shutting down the Mac clones, or the constant censure on Apple support forums, or they suing people making programs to access the iPod (competing with the one and only HOLY way: iTunes), or...do I need to go on?
The reason why people complain on MS in the first place is because they have been so HUGE that everyone in the planet has at least worked on a PC running Windows. There are people that never seen a MAc in their life.
Unfortunately, things are changing with the iPods, iPhones...Oh well...
So, MS should approve Open Office on Windows machines as a gest of good will... oh wait, Open Office runs on Windows without MS control, the horror!!!!
The point is: yes, Apple are now angels, look pa, they have approved one competing service. But the real news is: there are STILL A LOT of competing applications that are locked out. But no, look daddy, they are not THAT bad!
I can imagine, 15 years from now, an article showing "Big beautiful boxes from the 2000s" a big "portable" Acer Aspire 5536G which a weight of 1,2 Kg inclusive batteries (wow, would some users from the future scream in awe) (Oh, I remember THAT one, comments another). Oh, look at that iPhone: you needed A POCKET to carry that thing!...
Well, as a geek, I would say: COOL... but as a player, I would rather like that they would concentrate into making good games (the Wii DESPERATELY need them, a lot more) than keeping putting out more and more expensive gadgets.
But hey, that's me, that's why I now own a 360 after having sold my wii. I'm sure as hell not their target, so what do I know.
Exactly. Those which often cry "freedom" often forget that my freedom includes the freedom of choosing the choices they dislike.
I have chosen Windows 7, and I'm damn happy I did so.
How do you **know** that it's a total fabrication? You can never be sure with governments or even individuals that are part of the government. What your heart says to you is , unfortunately, often not the reality. I'm not saying the Israel is doing it. What I'm saying is that I won't be chocked is the accusations were true, but sure, they are innocent until proved guilty.
Don't worry, you are on/. With a so "insightful" and "informative" post, you will get moderated +5 soon, even if there are 56 similar posts before yours.
Files will always be available. I don't thing the file paradigm will be gone anytime soon the next 17 years. Too much legacy information would be gone in that case. For the same reason, audio and video files will keep being supported (as legacy formats perhaps) but they WILL be supported. There are huge archives in many places with terabytes of important media data that is archived and will need to be accessed somehow.
The only problem might be the hardware, but hell, you can keep the media on some unused computer/server which will be available for only that purpose. Backup the files regularly via FTP to some other remote system (just in case). When hardware changes, just move the media to a new computer in the period of transition.
I have a lot of data/programs from my old DOS days in the 80s that I still can access using emulators. Old floppies won't fit in my floppyless computer but I have copied them to my HD since ages back.
Sorry, not a troll. I have a Mac and I use it more or less regularly, but now that I have Windos 7... I'm NOT going back to the Mac. Windows 7 is like OSX but without all the Mac annoyances. That thing rules.
So, should MS sue the city of Hamburg for their decision to use OS software? I don't think so.
In this life you need to walk with two bags: one for your victories, one for your defeats. Learn to lose with dignity, work harder and make better products. When you make an excellent product, you will automatically win. On the other hand, if you live your whole life imitating ribbons, start menus, taskbars, with bad documentation and support, instead for making different and better products, do not cry foul.
After all, it's about freedom (or so says the OS community). Or do they mean freedom between OS alternatives only. Partial freedom?
Usability for who? I have been a Mac user (unfortunately) since MacOS5 days and up to this day I find the Apple way of thinking wayyyyy overrated. They are great creating an aura of "best usability" for themselves, but there are a lot of moments that still irritate me in that philosophy. They do a good work fixing those things and making you believe that they were right, though, and are still right even today. I remember years ago how Mac fanboys could call you imbecile just because you insinuated the advantage of a 2 buttons mouse. Or the advantage of making Macs Intel compatible instead of powerpc. The same people now scream the greatness of those 2 things without even remembering the past.
The people defending today the "one menu to rule them all" philosophy with all the "mouse on the edge, easier, blah blah" will be overjoyed and forget about their advocacy if Steve some day decides to think with his head and change this irritating "feature"...
Overall I like Windows this days a lot more and only use my Mac when needed (testing, etc).
I always considered Pascal (or Delphi) a great language for beginners. Powerful enough, structured, type safe and very elegant. From there, jumping to other languages is quite easy.
That's the problem with standardization committees.... Too slow. While all this happens all other proprietary languages like Delphi, C#, you name it, are adding features day after day to make life easy for the programmer. And that , believe me or not, means a lot. Yes, sometimes that means a lot more that portability and all that jazz.
I know you are joking/trolling but this is telling us that no system is really that safe, be it windows basex, unix based, you name it. The IPhone is so popular that it's now an important target for spam/virus makers. Windows has been the only **'important enough** target in the desktop until today. But let OZX have the same share than Windows and you will see root escalation viruses comming out from the sky every single day, no matter what the filosophy of the OS is.
Really, I've been on/. for a while now I I though it was OK to crack MS products, to install OSX on non-apple hardware, download copyrighted music, and don't care for breaking any possible commercial EULA. But violating the GPL????? Death to those suckers. How dare them?
Yeah, sure, cry me a river. I am so tired at this moment of all the tears that isn't funny anymore. Sure, Linuzz has comming a long way and there are people that actually use it. Let everyone else use whatever they want. Maybe there ARE a lot of problems in Linuland that are actually preventing it being more popular at the desktop: the audio debacle, the lack of a standard between several (even closely related) distros, etc...
I really hate Apple products, but you have to give them credit: they have done in five-six years more than the (oh so praised) linuzz comminity has done in 20 years and they have comming up with a system that people use and gladly pay for. On the other hand, for being free, Linux is a failure in the desktop. for whatever reasosn. And yes, keep crying, maybe you will get 3 more users out of pitty.
Define the word "better". It's not better, not worse. Google just came out with another way to do the same. You just happen to like it better. I think Bing's way is more optimal.
And here we are. And it's getting worse day by day.

Great! I chose Windows. I hope it's OK in this place to say that. Or do you mean politically correct choices only? A honest question.
Did you forgot their happy lawyers suing everyone using Mac themes on PCs back in the 90s?

That speaks aloud not so much about Vista's "failure". It just SCREAMS about XP success. Really.
Well, DODBox uses... FreeDOS!!!
Be welcome.
Fortunately, noone care about this fossil anymore.
Be free. Use WHATEVER you want.
