Haven't seen this question answered directly:
Is the world a better place now that Anwar al-Awlaki is dead? And this is a personal question, not a political or moral type question.
Dropbox will suffer in terms of reputation, customer retention, and future customers if they fire the programmer or not. Coming from a guy who just got laid off in favor of keeping a guy who took well over 1 hour to troubleshoot a broken "left mouse button", firing might result in better company profits in hourly wage and vacation time. But gotta admit, I buttted heads with my "nontechnical" boss who told me how to fix each and every problem that came up on our systems. I finally gave up and did things "his way" without pointing out the future implications his "fix" would result in. Now they have "Mr Left Mouse Button" to find and fix the problems.
Making an honest mistake shouldn't be the end of the world but rather a way not to conduct business in the future.
My mistake was not quitting 5 years earlier. But if did that I would have missed my boss's "bad juju" explanation to upper management as to why our some of our systems weren't working very well. That was priceless for the 1st few weeks but got rather embarrassing when it became "the standard" up channeled answer in my last 3 years.
Those evil Google folks...time to break out the pitch forks, tar and feathers. We cannot allow them to take vacations to cool places. Who's with me on this. But please only bring recycled tar and synthetic feathers as we don't want to be featured in a WSJ article.
Giving a pass to "them kind" because they could cure a disease? This opens the door to many different scenarios. Why stop at people who like to watch rape films. Why not hand out passes for every perversion and/or crime. You gotta draw a line somewhere. I know where that line is for me.
Person A rapes a 7 year old or an 18 year old or a 40 year old. Person B films this act. Person C watches and enjoys the violence in the film. Who gives a damn if it's a crime or not...Enjoying the rape is just plain sick. But I guess in someones demented thought process, it's just one of those freedoms we need to have and protect? It's a wonderful world we live in. Person A and B should be in jail. Person C? That sicko needs help...off a tall cliff. We have no need for "them kind" in this world.
Who does this Bill Gates guy think he is? He gives boatloads of his money away to improve education and he thinks he should have some say in how the money is spent? What a total jerk.
If the government gets rid of DST for the health benefits of a few then they should be required to make new laws for other causes of stress too: How about doing federal taxes, job interviews, coming home to the wife after a sneak trip to a strip club, traffic jams, law suits, the bogyman, XMAS shopping, public speaking, jock itch, earthquakes, tornadoes, ice storms and the list could go on forever. More so for some and less for others. Maybe our government should not try to protect us from all stresses in life?
As I've seen written 100's of time in sarcasm "think of the children" seems to apply here. And with all the observations out there that the US is losing its status in the "#1's in the world" like education and life expectancy, moving the US up from one of the lowest tax rates to a higher tax rate is totally acceptable? And we didn't just "give" an $800 billion tax break to the rich, we extended this law.
To all the people out there that want to tax "other people" I say give till it hurts first. Voluntarily give more or all of your own money to the government and leave my paycheck alone. You got kids in a school that's not doing a good job teaching...slip the school district a few $1000 of your own money. You know "think of the children" but in this case, think of your own children. But of course there isn't a single person out there that will step up to the plate to personally solve their own problems.
Are you saying we must believe either evolution OR intelligent design with no other theory being possible? I personally believe it's neither so I'm ignorant? Here's a really ignorant belief... "We just don't know and that's OK with me". Just keep on searching and someday the proof will come out.
When I was 10 years old or 40 years ago, I called an "old lady" an "Old Bag". Said old lady told my dad what I said. I was not whipped or yelled at. Dad just calmly apologized to the lady and said he'd handle it at home. I had to dress up in paper shopping bags for a week. Never uttered those words gain. Fully expected a whipping but never got it but the lesson was learned. Maybe a good dose of extreme humiliation and a sincere apology is in order for these punks?
The "Doing more with less" mantra has been around since the 1980's for most companies too. So stop blaming and/or expecting more from the taxpayers. Blame the parents who need to be a big part of fixing the education system in the US. And by fixing I don't mean going to school board meetings. This mean giving your kids some extra learning opportunities at home, enforcing good behavior and instilling a good work ethic. But of course every time I say this, I get the same old shit like "what about the parents who work 2 jobs". As a cold hearted SOB...my reply is, someone has to get an "F".
So give the cops an alternative? Do we just get rid of the BAC Test? How about we just ask the driver in question "Are you too drunk or impaired to drive?" and if they say "No", the cops just let them go? If you were Dictator for the Day how would you change the BAC Test/Drunk Driving Laws so they are fair and just for everyone.
What about the "Implied Consent" thing you sign when getting a drivers license? I know I signed something about it in California, Montana, North Dakota and South Carolina. Seems these States have you by the short hairs.
A lousy decision, you say? What makes you such a business expert to say this? Post your resume/accomplishments in the business world that shows you know more about making money than say, Amazon. After all, Amazon will probably lose more money by continuing to sell books most people find somewhat offensive than taking them off their virtual bookshelf. So what are their options??? Take their chances selling the "rape books" while some organization screams rape or take their chances that you will vote with your wallet while screaming censorship. The way I see it, Amazon is in a lose-lose situation but someone in the company "thinks" they will lose more by not selling rape titled books. In my heart, I feel Amazon is making the best of a bad situation. Obviously you disagree and that's OK with me.
You don't see the difference between the most brutal gangs in the US and elected politicians?
Well, I guess you win this discussion and I totally see your point. OTOH sometimes there's no point even posting on/.
Daddy was spot on.
Why can't we rule ourselves? Hell, my next door neighbor can't figure out he shouldn't pee in my side yard. My co-worker thinks taking money out of the snack fund is OK. The Bloods and Crips think killing is entertainment. But we should be able to rule ourselves without any authority or experience in "the ruling job".
And you truly think our government can effectively govern, help its citizens, conduct foreign affairs and things like criminal investigations in a transparent world? Are you living with Alice or just ingested too many of those mushrooms you found in the forest?
I agree with my dad who said..."there are some people who shouldn't be allowed to vote". I'm pretty sure I just responded to one of those people.
And 30 years ago we were saying "the man" had to go in our already fascist state. Amazing we got rid of fascism in those 30 years and we're on the road to a new fascism state. Perception is in the eyes of the author?

Kevin is a wimp. Next week I go 1 week with just a keyboard and mouse. No monitor or computer.

Sorry about that.

Holy crap...I'm moving to Africa for a cold fusion reaction buzz.

Until the culture changes I'll blame the mouth that utters the words. Now lets start the cultural revolution so I can start blaming "words".

"Turnabout is fair play"???? Vote for every Redemocan in the 2012 election and the US will be much better off.
I'm real tired but I cannot imagine a way that nepotism could make any difference in winning a nation election.
