I tell my customers after a 15min. glance (free of charge), that they have 2 options: 1) I clean it there (provided they have dsl), and it will take anywhere from 2-6 hours and after that it may still require a 2hr. re-install of the OS. OR 2) I take it to my shop (where I can work on it and others and play Quake), and charge them a 2hrs. labor flat fee.
Most choose 1, i don't know why I always recommend 2, because, hey, I love my Quake...:)
When the bill is in the range that they could have gotten a new computer, they realize their mistake. However, I do set them up with a spyware blocker, MS' Official, Firefox for browsing (with a 5 minute WOW tutorial), and recommend them switching to Thunderbird for email, and recommend they purchase Norton for Anti-Virus (or update).
(And yes, for most of them IE is their ISP... not kidding, 'I pay SBC, but Internet Explorer is my ISP...right?').
I do what the customer asks, and when I point out that they are asking for the incorrect thing, they get indignant and demand their ignorance! So I provide them with that for which they ask.
I have also had some who say 'Can't I just get a new computer and give this one to the kids?', why yes... or you could just have me get your data backed up, restore the os, and you can have it all back good as new for 2 hrs. labor... "NO, I want a new one", and so it goes.
I got a free 1ghz. laptop that way, customer got angry said get my data off it and throw it in the trash. Passed my K6-500 compaq Lappy to my son,(Mepis 3.3.1), running good, and I get the new trash:)
Saving data costs money and most people want that done even though they do not/will not do it before they have problems...
What part of,"An emergency on your part does not constitute one on mine" do you not understand?
If it was only $300. It is a lot more. MS Office: another $500 (bestbuy.com) Norton Internet security: $80 (bestbuy.com)
After paying for all of this, you would think the operating system/office/etc. would all play nice and work. Not so. This is why I use Linux (K6 compaq w/192mb ram, running latest mepis). Some things don't work properly, but they didn't with windows either. XP will install on this, but it is god awful slow, you would think you were using a Pentium 66 with the bad co-processor.
Mepis works fine, so does sound et. al. Cost, $0. So, if I have to do a little extra to get those things that Mepis does not provide, (I had to apt-get kdegames cuz I really NEEDED Klickety)
I can do that at the same time I am running other programs and the system does not pee all over itself when I do.(As Win-All have been wont to do).
I don't mind paying, but when I pay, I want it to work. Would you pay a premium price for a car that you had to push to work every other day, I think not.
Updates - time after time MS is leaving it's customers hanging out to dry taking months to fix code THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PROPERLY SECURITY CHECKED BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED, THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. TRUSTED COMPUTING. I paid for the software but you will fix it when you feel like it... great.
Windows has never sold a finished product (2K was as close as they came), most of their products are alpha quality when they are released for sale. With all their money(and ours), you would think they would set these things straight but time and time again they do not.
If I want a system that may or may not work, then I refuse to pay a premium price to do that. I still have windows boxen around, but it is just for reference when one of my clients calls and asks how to get the thingy back on the left side of the whatchama-callit. That and to time "Clean-install to Infected Bot". It's better than most fps'...
I don't believe this, it is 3yrs since XP the all holy mother comes out after thousands, ney 10s of thousands, ney hundreds of thousands of exploits have passed there doors as "to do" lists. And now they are finally "taking this thing seriously"
It's damn good they don't build spaceships... everyone would have a Shuttle in their back yard, or at least a big hunk of metal that use-ta be one:)
I'm not saying that they are not trying, it's that they take their own sweet time, but expect other to respond immediately. "Firefox is broke, na na na nya" Fix your shit Bitch, then come and beg us to test it.
Inovation - doesn't look worth a damn, but when it does it'll do this, and this, and this... and look how shiny it is!!!
Apple is still going to be selling hardware, THEIR hardware, they have just made it so their OS is more adaptable to the existing hardware base. Yes a lot of people will jump to MacOS but wtf? They are still paying for something they can get for free, so lets let them do as they must. I will use my free os, that does all the fun and crunchy things theirs can do. Except I don't have to deal with drm in my apps and files.
In my high school, (and dood, I graduated 25 years ago) we had inside lunch and the "a la carte" lines outside where you can buy sodas, burgers, fries, pie etc. you name it. So now I can get a report card on what my child is purchasing with the money I give him for lunch.
BTW - my son get's french fries, a couple of milks and an apple. He actually eats "lunch" after school.
Having had to be involved in the setup of a district-wide installation of a lunch purchasing system w/PayPal ties, I am fully aware these systems have been available for a few years. That being said, if the parent does not actually go online, setup their account, and go through the training (albeit simple), they do not know what is being purchased with their dollars. In our case all purchases must be made with an id number so all intake is logged. This can be bypassed by Susy buying an item for Billy... but you get the idea. All items do get logged so if your kid does spend your money on "Cookies, frech fries and a soda" you can know about it.
The system is ok, based on an apache/java and you can use any browser to get to it, unlike www.mealpay.com, which REQUIRES IE!
Having read the forum, these people think that their children are attending a "private" school. A charter school is a school that is not run by the public school structure but is bound by their rules... Many of the arguments and problems they have (claimed/state) are the same things that happen in "public"schools. They need to do some reality checking, if they go to the local school board they can get a lot more done than what they are doing now.
Also, these people are citizens of the Hangin-Chad state o' FlowRidda. It is now wonder they do not understand what is going on or how to go about getting things done.
I made this same statement "teaching concepts not specific applications", and was called arrogant. (true but it does not give them the right to say it )
They say they are "teaching them to u
se what is being used in the 'REAL WORLD'", when I brought up, the fact that IBM, Novell, Sun all use something other than MS Office, they just said, I was nitpicking. When I told them that if the children were going into the legal profession they would be using WordPerfect, they laughed and asked if that "Still Existed"? And when I told them that installing OOo would not cost them in licensing, they said they get a great "Education" discount, so why not pay $50 per and get a "Real" product as opposed to "Free".
And the final straw, "Yeah, but in Word I do [insert command set] it doesn't do it that way in OOo", They want what they know, they do not like having to learn. Never mind the fact they do not use more than 10% of Word's capabilities, let alone teach those other 90%.
If I sound bitter, it's cuz I am, it was a looooong week...
Of course coexistence is possible, I am doing it now!!!
I live in the middle of city in a historic structure that has had no one living in it for 10 years, it was used as an office. There are cable co. coaxii coming in but the cable-co does not know from whence they came... so I use my dsl line to download via bittorrent the shows to my Mepis box,(a couple of minutes after they have aired sometimes), then view them with no problems on my tv (attached to the computer as a monitor:)). No commercials and the only news I have to watch is the Daily Show. Not sure but I think I am coexisting peacefully with TV (btw the channels don't come in via antenna, of the 4 I am supposed to have I get 1).
And, I am indifferent to windows, and this is perpetually groovy!
While there have been many LiveCD distros over the past 2 years spring to life Ubuntu is ok, and it does work, but then so does slax, Knoppix, MDK Move and on and on. My personal fave is Mepis but nobody here talks about it. It works, always has, gives you the run-from-cd option along with a gui based install (hint hint ubuntu). I prefer KDE over gnome, it stems from a problem with DeadRat 5, gnome crashed way too often. I have a long memory...:) Cobind is nice too and is DeadRat/Fedora based.
the only reason to use Nero over K3b would have been nero's vision express product for creating vcd/dvds in a very easy manner, this not being included does not make me want the nero product.

IF YOU FEED THE MONKEY IT WILL KEEP COMING BACK.
Funny thing is, they still have to keep some of the old bsd machines around for

We shall dub him, Taco Taco!
AMD is gonna get Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier to create a faster and cheaper service! You just watch...
The $500mil is for the DATA they have collected. The software is trivial, although we will see M$ really integrate it in the next version of IE. >:}

Can You Say - MANDRIVA?
So Cuba will go from WMD(windows of mass destruction) to the OS of the masses, sweet.

BFCB is a wonderful LART and should be applied liberally, a Clue-By-Four also works wondrously.

As a Sysadmin you should always use your powers for good... your own good

Must be, I think I run Windows on Quake3
heheheh ehehe
Is Quake 3 an operating system??? :)
Good choice, it's debian, it has most of what you need already installed, it works.
All that matters is I can play Quake 3 just fine... well, the game plays just fine... :)
Netscape, how do you feel...
now that you have joined the dark side of the force?
