I really like having online acess to all my movies and videos. It's easy it's convient. However if I own the copy I should at the absolute very least be able to download a copy of my purchased media. We can do this with music we can do this with games why can't you do this with videos?
Oh sorry even though you paid for it we don't trust you with a downloadable copy.
The pricing needs to be updated to reflect the loss in value or they need to give that value back by either allowing you to download stuff you own or allowing you to resale stuff you own.
Hey if they really hate the market they could just offer like a 10% refund if later delete the video from your account.
So I suppose they are actually killing off more industries than I even thought of in my post.
They are killing off the second hand market, the physical disc market, the entire industry that makes the discs and the industry that makes the disc cases.
There is no way hosting all those movies indefinitely costs even remotely close to making all of those discs yet there is no discount.
Most video sales are very rapidly moving to digital copies i'm starting to see more and more stuff that is digital only that you can't buy physical copies of.
We thought blurays were going to eventually replace dvds but it looks more like online video is going to kill them both before that happens.
This is a problem. You pay the same amount for a digital copy as you do for a physical copy and while it doesn't get lost (unless the company goes under) or damaged you also can not lend, trade or sell your copy often times you can't even watch your copy offline it's yours permanently with a physical copy you may have been able to buy a blueray set for $30 watch it then sell it to one of your friends for $15 lowering your own net expense.
Second hand sales seem to be theft to the industry possibly of the same level as piracy.
They are doing a very very good job of destroying the used video industry by making sure no one has discs to sell.
As for related to your post. Why are they making so many laptops now without a hard drive door? It's only the 3rd most replaced part after the battery and keyboard.
You can actually do that now or at least I can it would take about 7 hours to upload 60GB on the LTE connection I use for internet at home.
What sort of applications are you talking about? about the most bw intensive thing I use is twitch some streams don't do transcoding so unless you have at least a 12Mbps connection or so you're SOL if you want to watch.
I keep considering using a cloud backup service but haven't picked one yet I want something where only we have the encryption key.
Apple ID security update with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra
Dear Bleh Bleh Bleh, Thank you for using two-step verification to protect the security of your Apple ID. If you install the iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra public betas this summer and meet the basic requirements, your Apple ID will be automatically updated to use two-factor authentication. This is our most advanced, easy-to-use account security, and itâ(TM)s required to use some of the latest features of iOS, macOS, and iCloud. Once updated, youâ(TM)ll get the same extra layer of security you enjoy with two-step verification today, but with an even better user experience. Verification codes will be displayed on your trusted devices automatically whenever you sign in, and you will no longer need to keep a printed recovery key to make sure you can reset a forgotten password. For more information, read Two-Factor Authentication for Apple ID. If you have additional questions, visit Apple Support.
Great! We have established that there is a shortcoming in our education system (ignoring colleges here) how about we do something about that like IDK teach that?
It's something like giving a set of students that just graduated from 4 years of french language classes a test over how well they understand nuclear fission. Of course they are going to do badly on it they weren't taught that!
The prices for a digital copy shouldn't be equal to the price of a physical copy there is a huge diffrence in what you get.
With a digital copy you get convienence but you lose the right of resale, you can't sell it to someone else or give it away.
It destroys any chance of their being a second hand market further fixing prices.
Some shows now aren't even available on disc they are online only.
Assuming the show or movie is say 10 years old and they only made the one movie or season why should it still be $25? I'm sure that netflix isn't paying $25 shouldn't we get more reasonable pricing too?
Please explain why you can have a subscription that allows you to watch over 1000 tv shows for under $15/mo but a single season of a tv show may cost $25+ a single movie may cost $20 and I've yet to find a service that allows the rental of tv shows.
How about this you can buy shows by the episode for $1 but you can rent them for $0.25 an episode. Still higher than you would like but way more reasonable for something you will very likely never watch again.
We can create a commercial subscription service for like $15/mo and let people watch most anything they want and just divvy up the money based on what people like.
In the same service we will allow purchase and rental of other shows for a reasonable charge. (if netflix is only $12/mo for FOUR people no show should ever cost more than half that for a single season $25/season is ridiculous esp for a 12/yr old tv show)
Of course this service will have all the ease of use of existing pirate services such as the notoriously popular pirate site Netflix you will be able to download content to watch later and if you purchase a video you will have rights to download and copy to other devices. (not distribution rights but backup and format shifting) There will be no ads and you can easily filter what is included in your plan and what you can pay extra for.
Of course the response from the industry is going to be: Are you CRAZY?! Why in the hell would we ever give customers what they actually want!
OEM factory install of windows 10 if it was given incompatible drivers it was given them at the factory. The way the font is glitching out on the update status looks like a ram error.
Today I removed the aircard, half the ram and disabled everything that could be disabled in the bios. It had made it to 21% by the time I left work today so it might work. I doubt it though.
I've always heard that the dead have no right to privacy or at least they don't in the US am I understanding correctly that in germany even the dead have a right to privacy?
Please tell me how using less polluting energy generation kills more people than the generation systems we currently use.
As for going from the first to the second number are you suggesting we do nothing at all? Or something else?
What they seem to already be doing trying to force more efficient technologies on us I do not believe for a second that LED bulbs would be as widely available today if they had not required a minimum efficiency.
Most consumers aren't comparing efficiency they are looking at this 13w 60w equivalent and costs $3 but I can get a box of four of the these other 60w 60w bulbs for $0.78!
I've got a windows 10 system i'm working on now that won't install 1607 (AKA the anniversary update) just hangs at 93% or so.
I've tried windows update, factory reset, windows 10 upgrade tool, factory reset, and now i'm trying the install from a windows 10 disc it doesn't seem to be working either it's been stuck at 32% since this morning.
I don't think it's going to be as big a problem as it's been made out to be every advancement prior has ended up creating new jobs or allowing new jobs to exist. Although I think we are going to have to put a lot more focus on retraining people so they can find a new job.
Used to it would display the name on the account when you called someone but a few years ago they made outgoing caller ID opt in and everyone's changed to "WIRELESS CALLER". Now if you want people to see your name you have to go online and add the free share name id feature to your account.
As for receiving caller ID you have to pay even for users that have opted in to the program.
Also on a lot of devices it's incompatible with VoLTE so you have to pick caller ID or VoLTE
What about these?

Related in companies destroying industries.

They must have a design by now that doesn't hurt when you step on it and are just waiting for the right time to release it.
Their business would double overnight from everyone having to rebuy and the large number of parents that would now be ok having them in their house.
You can actually do that now or at least I can it would take about 7 hours to upload 60GB on the LTE connection I use for internet at home.

Are you talking about the Tuskegee syphilis experiment?
I mean it wasn't exactly classified but the people involved were unaware of their involvement.
/. posted about it 11 years ago.
https://yro.slashdot.org/story...
I haven't seen much about it in a while so I suppose maybe people have just forgotten about it since then.
Great! We have established that there is a shortcoming in our education system (ignoring colleges here) how about we do something about that like IDK teach that?

What free services are out there that do tape to digital conversion?

Not just that but a DVD with a digital copy is often cheaper than a digital copy.
It would be nice if amazon offered autorip for DVDs like they do for music.

I mean like diarys, email accounts stuff like that. Here in the states they have no legal protection for the dead IIUC. Is that diffrent In Germany?
That is still interesting to know about attorney client privilege.
I've always heard that the dead have no right to privacy or at least they don't in the US am I understanding correctly that in germany even the dead have a right to privacy?

Change is a PITA.
Funny i've seen the update counter beak on several occasions so it will actually say something like installing update 49 of 3.
I currently have a windows 10 machine that's been stuck at 91% installing the 1607 anniversary update since this time yesterday.
It's bound to finish eventually right?
The CCC and WPA were pretty nice programs imho.
What else do they expect?
I just have 4 computers on my desk one each routed through taiwan, canada, mexico and the united states.
So I can watch 4 shows at the same time by myself on 4 different profiles......
Anyone who thinks netflix isn't selling it this way just so you can share it is full of shit.
Also are the people who insist that paying for netflix is piracy.
At this rate buying a sandwich at arby's and then eating it with your friends at hardee's will be called piracy soon too.
Verizon has a directory.
