I prefer my story Halo 2-style, with cut-scenes that almost bring you to tears, and when it ends you jump off the couch and run around the room because it's so, just... great. And of course it's from the company that brought you Marathon, perhaps the best story a FPS game has ever had.

As for the 2D renaissance, there was a rather critically acclaimed game called Viewtiful Joe out a couple years ago, although I didn't personally play it. Also one called Alien Hominid.

"Generation" is a tough term when it comes to consoles. Arguably, the Dreamcast was its own generation, since it was more or less dead and gone before Gamecube and Xbox joined the PS2.

Wikipedia claims 7 generations, with the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii being the 7th, so we can go with that.

    Oh, the Find command.

So I go to my package manager and I find a program named "Happy Joy Game 2." It looks fun; so I hit install. The package manager does its thing, and a few minutes later I get a nice little green checkmark next to "Happy Joy Game 2" in the list. Great! Let's play!

Open my GNOME menu, select games... it's not listed. Oh, ok. That's a shame, but I'll just use the Find command like some joker on Slashdot recommended to me! Open the Find dialog, type in, "Happy Joy Game 2"... no results. Ok, let's try "Game"... some results, but none of them relevant.

Look at that, it turns out the executable filename for "Happy Job Game 2" is actually "gkgam2" or something equally obtuse. ... so tell me again how the Find command is supposed to help?

On Mac OS, if I install a program named "Sam's FTP Client", I can hit "Find", search for "Sam's FTP Client" and it'll pop up in the list before I'm even to the word "client."

The problem is that the two are fundamentally incompatible, from a user's perspective. Are "ok" and "cancel" good button labels, or should they be "yes" and "no?" What side of the dialog should "yes" be on? The Mac-ish side, or the Window-ish side? Does the Start menu equivalent belong on the top or bottom of the screen? Should there be a shortcut bar at the top of the screen? Etc.

You can't combine the two in their current form because KDE apps behave entirely differently from GNOME apps. And yes, I'm sure the programming code is very similar, etc, but I'm talking about the user experience.

On your note about directories, Apple also kind of deprecated the Unix-style directories in favor of a set of more, but very clearly labeled, directories all in the same place. The system, and each user, has their own /Library, and inside there it's clearly obvious where things go. System logs go in /Library/Logs, user logs in ~/Library/Logs, user settings go in ~/Library/Preferences, etc. It's all very simple and clearly marked.

That old Unix directory structure, IMO, should be one of the first things to go. Or at the very least, use more than 3 letters to describe what the directory is supposed to hold.
