Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to live by the motto service above self. Rotary brings together business professionals from throughout your community and we unite together to share our talents in helping both our local community and the world. Odds are your community has a local club, and you could work with like-minded business professionals to fill your philanthropic desires.
I myself am a computer technician, and I have worked with our local club and a club in Pignon, Haiti, to provide computers in their local schools for administrative and teaching staff. We have worked with a club in Rajkot, India, to build a dam and provide clean water for thousands of people.
Many districts also partake in a program called the group study exchange. A group of 8-10 local professionals travel to another community somewhere in the world to learn and work with similar professionals in other parts of the world. What do network technicians do in Brazil, or Japan, or Germany? Contact your local district to see if they are offering a Group Study Exchange to any of these countries and work with professionals in those countries.
You can click on the club locator on the top of the Rotary International website to find a club near you.
There are also a plethora of matching grants available worldwide, and I'm sure you could find multiple ones
I would bet all the money I have that 99.99% of these problems are caused by people not taking the time to learn the standard library of whatever programming language they're using.
I'll take that bet, and you can send me a cashier check.
The bulk of the 2016 bug was due to a miscode in a library of microsoft software, that was used by various systems, notably Windows Mobile 5.1+, EFTPOS systems in Austrailia, etc. Bugs exist in all aspects of code, and even standard library functions. The problem is when the bug is in the library, it has widespread effects around the world. The benefit is that a single fix can be coded, and then rolled out to everyone using that library.
When it comes to monitoring heart rates in Gym Class, there are two ways to go about this
1) Teach them to take their own pulse, and they can learn a valuable skill to be used anytime
or
2) Use Heart Rate Monitors, therefore teaching the students to be peons to the capitalistic sale of gadgets that are only useful when they are present and work
I love gadgets as much as the next geek here on slashdot, but come on... without basic knowledge, how will the next generation be able to function without these tools.
.... this is as bad as the match classes that now teach use of a calculator, as opposed to teaching MATH
There is virtually no safety concern with the gift alone. I was given a 12 gauge shotgun for my 10th birthday... yeah it was overkill for a 10 year old, but what I wasn't given was ammunition. That came and left with the adult supervision.
Stopping being idiots and start (re)introducing 1 dollar coins, and add 0.5 and 2 dollar coins while you are at it.
I have dollar coins, and I use them almost daily. Our work vending machines accept them, and the change machine only spits out dollars, no quarters used here. (and I'm in Minnesota)
It's always fun when you hand one to a Kid at McD. and has no idea what to do with it:)
Some side notes for those that don't RTFA.
Audio - yes there is audio, and quite loud they note
Chip Maker - Americhip (the first 5 seconds is an promo for the chip maker)
Depth - the chip itself is 1/4 inch thick, not exactly paper thin.
Market - Sending to select subsribers in LA & NYC
I am still curious about the environmental impact of this technology on the garbage world
Use of Digital Content. Upon your payment of the applicable fees set by Amazon, Amazon grants you the non-exclusive right to keep a permanent copy of the applicable Digital Content and to view, use, and display such Digital Content an unlimited number of times, solely on the Device or as authorized by Amazon as part of the Service and solely for your personal, non-commercial use. Digital Content will be deemed licensed to you by Amazon under this Agreement unless otherwise expressly provided by Amazon.
I guess that since they returned the money, the assumed a defacto reverse logic to the terms of their agreement. How many times in logic courses was it emphasized that:
if a then b
does not necessarily mean
if b then a
I guess they missed that lesson
However... further down in the TOS they state (as will be an argument for their defense):
No Illegal Use and Reservation of Rights. You may not use the Device, the Service or the Digital Content for any illegal purpose. You acknowledge that the sale of the Device to you does not transfer to you title to or ownership of any intellectual property rights of Amazon or its suppliers. All of the Software is licensed, not sold, and such license is non-exclusive.
and to be clear, they define software as
4. Software: Definitions. The following terms apply to the Device and to (a) all software (and the media on which such software is distributed) of Amazon or third parties that is pre-installed on the Device at time of purchase or that Amazon provides as updates/upgrades to the pre-installed software (collectively, the "Device Software"), unless you agree to other terms as part of an update/upgrade process; and (b) any printed, on-line or other electronic documentation for such software (the "Documentation"). As used in this Agreement, "Software" means, collectively, the Device Software and Documentation.
Therefore the content (the book) is not defined as software, and therefore the content, in their own words, is OWNED not licensed.
For those who had this book removed, you have been stolen from and should press charges. If someone breaks into your house, takes your PS3, and leaves $400 cash where it was, does that mean they are not stealing?
Many medical options already do, via incentives. My insurance company pays 20% of any gym membership I want to sign up for. I have a friend whose insurance company sponsored a contest for individuals reducing their blood pressure, and he ended up winning a high end exercise bike. They don't typically charge less, but they are actively increasing their "Value added" features to reduce the cost of claims.
MyRate by Progressive (as mentioned in the summary) has been around for quite some time (in select states) and I am a longtime customer. Here is how it works:
You get a computer chip that installs on the ODBCII port on your computer. Every 6 months (when you renu your policy), you pull out the chip, plug it into your computer via USB, and upload the data with your policy renewal request. You can view charts of your driving speeds, times, etc.
Progressive then offers you a discount percentage off of your base premium. They have an explicit policy that utilizing this chip cannot INCREASE your premium, only give you the option of a discount (in other words, we overprice our policy, but give you an option to recoup it if you drive less)
The discounts are as follows: 5% = participation discount 5% = safety discount (stay below 75mph and the discount is yours) up to 10% = based on driving time / milage.
The 10% is calculated roughly as such. At the beginning of the tracking period, you are given a 10% discount. then for every mile you drive, that percentage is reduced by a fraction. That fraction (something around 0.0006% per mile) is determined based on the time classification you drive. they have 3 classifications of driving time, low, medium, & high. High are times such as rush hour, and overnight, medium are weekends & lunch hour, low is everything else.
Ultimately, with both the safety discount and the amount I drive, I end up with somewhere around a 16% discount off my policy renewal.
It can be compared to the california policy, but in reality the current offered program seems quite different from the proposal.
When many tools required a minimum of 6 characters, I had to switch to 1-2-3-4-5-6.... it's was hard to remember which password was which, until I bought a new set of luggage that conformed to the new security standards.
Unfortunately No.
The Homeowner will sue, be AWARDED millions of dollars, the company will file for bankrupsy protection, rebuild under a different name, and the homeowner won't see a penny.

Here in Arizona, we don't have disasters
And What do you classify John McCain's Presidential campaign to be?
And honestly the chances of a tornado hitting that exact same place and causing any sort of major damage is slim.
That's what they said about the Nuclear Facility in "Atomic Twister"

The real question is did anyone Not read this with a Shatner voice?

Be careful, that warm and fuzzy feeling is what you get when you're getting pickpocketed
Why are you having people spend money they don't need to?
