Exactly, when not necessary. When you have a "safe" weapon like a taser it seems it can almost always be necessary. Cops don't have to think anymore. Point, click, situation over. Welcome to your happy little police state.

  14. I bleed rubies... on PHP5 Vs. CakePHP Vs. RubyOnRails? · · Score: -1

I programmed in PHP for years, its a great language.

I started to learn Ruby about a year and a half ago and fell in love with it (in a non-gay, man/science way). Ruby was really exciting to me because of the flexibility of the language and the pure Object approach. There is also a huge huge backing in the open source community, you can search and find all sorts of plugins, librarires, objects, and help, just like working with PHP.

Now I don't want to troll and say anything poor against Cake, Ive personally never used it. I had my own personal framework when i worked with PHP and never really ventured out of it. I have done a fair amount of sites in Rails, and it DOES deliver, but like any tool, it only produces output when used correctly and unfortuneatly its not always used that way. I do for the most part think that Rails is a bit bloated. It has TONS of really cool features, but for that average project it has to MANY features.

I think a great approach to a ruby based project is to go with Merb. Its bleeding edge, but its very light weight and handles a lot of issues that people encounter with Rails, Uploads, and blocking. It includes ORM via ActiveRecord (for better or worse) its is greatly documented (http://merbivore.com/files/README.html) and has other cool features like multiple rendering, RESTful routes and controllers, RJS-like functionality, and a similar configuration layout to rails (database.yml, environment.rb, envronments).

The only potentially limiting feature of Merb, I believe is, that it ties you to Mongrel, which I know some people aren't fans of.

I had a really close friend I made on Ultima online. He was pretty cool, I talked to him on IRC all the time, we quested together . . . but then he showed up in game with a bugged +100HP helmet, so I killed him and took it. Then I put on all his gear and killed him again when he resurrected. Needless to say, our 'relationship' ended. I dont think I would have done that to a real friend... hmm...
