The government could just tell people to buy their insurance on "einsurance.com". As for the subsides: you could enter the amount of your subsidy as a tax credit on your tax return. Done.

Insurance companies price insurance based upon an individual's risk. The fact that some people can not afford the price of their insurance either because they are poor or because they are high risk is not the insurance company's problem.... it is the government's problem. The government could leave the insurance market alone, but provide medicaid to the poor and high-risk pools to those who are of high risk.

It is easy to price compare and to save a lot money if you want to. Most people are too lazy to be bothered.

I have had no problem obtaining price quotes from every medical provider I have used and I have saved a substantial amount of money by doing price comparisons. For those who are too meek to do their own price negotiation, there are companies who will negotiate price discounts for you at the cost of a percentage of the discount obtained. 24. Re:The reason is private insurance on Why Can't Big Government Launch a Website? · · Score: 1

The reason why health insurance is tied to employment is that employer provided health insurance is tax deductible, while individual purchased insurance is not tax deductible. If health insurance was not tied to employment the politicians would need to find another way to increase taxes on the poor. It is typically the poor who don't have employer provided health insurance.
