I am one of the lucky ones that live within a 20-30 minute drive of a Microcenter. I used to buy some computer accessories at CompUSA on Queens Blvd here in NYC but it was impossible to find parking and the prices were high. I then discovered Microcenter and have never been to any other computer store since. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff and the prices aren't much higher than newegg. Plus they have a huge parking lot.

Kinda sad to me but it was in the way of progress. Lots and lots of buildings still use the old DC elevators here in New York City. Just yesterday I loaded in to Bayard's in downtown Manhattan into a 4x4 foot elevator that I swear Otis himself must have installed. I love how you have to hold the lever to go up and down and manually align the elevator to the floor. The elevator lights are powered by the DC current as well. At Pratt Institute they used to have those old DC elevators that were powered by an ancient motor generator set that was dated back to the 30's. Hell up until 1999 the MTA still had an old DC substation that had Rotary converters for the subway. ConEd also kept the 25 cycle plants running to feed those substations until the early 90's.

If you want a feel of old DC equipment from the days when if you wanted power you had to make your own, head down to Pratt Institute (located in Brooklyn on Willoughby ave. and Hall st.). They still have 3 steam driven reciprocating piston dynamos built by Ames Iron Works. They work but are only for show. And to top it off they also have a steam turbine dynamo all of which is hooked to a large open marble panel board with knife switches, carbon arc circuit breakers and blade fuses. The panel is still live on the AC side. The Motor generator I mentioned is still there. You can go down to the Pratt engine room and get a tour from Conrad Milster, the Chief engineer who keeps the place running. The large 1930's brick steam boiler still heats the campus and the surrounding neighborhood. The site is an IEEE land mark and walking down there is like going back in time, a real treat.

Now granted I was about 4 or 5 at the time but my mother let me know that word was to never be used again. And I never said any of those curse words again in her presence during my youth. I hear plenty of kids around where I work that amaze me. 9-12 year olds spewing curse words like they were nothing. One time I herd an 11 yo boy jokingly tell a 19 yo girl that his friend wanted to fuck her right to her face in front of another few adults. Guess what, they all laughed. Ok enough of that. The thing is, this isn't a gun issue like a whole bunch of other posters are bickering about. This is a human issue. What happened in that young mans mind that he developed the will and intent to commit such a horrific act? Waking up in the mourning with his mind clearly made up to senselessly murder 30+ innocent people is not normal, even for a thug. I feel bad for the shooter, why did he snap? And if you are thinking "Why feel bad for him?" Well I don't think he intended this thing to happen. He was just a kid, maybe a student just trying to find his place in this rat race. Something in his life caused him to snap. His pain was so great that he felt the need to inflict it upon others. Now his parents have to bury their son and live with the fact that he gunned down 30+ others. No one should have to suffer so greatly. Sad day for all.

Man this really bothers me. So incredibly sad that I am holding back tears as I am typing. Those 30+ people were daughters, sons, friends, maybe even mothers and fathers. How many people are going to go to sleep tonight knowing their son or daughter was murdered? Dammit its so fucked up. These were just kids trying to better themselves and then they get cut down right in their prime for no reason. My heart goes out to all involved in this.

I hate to break it to ya but stealing one of those things will be very difficult. Once the container is in place you really think its just going to sit there? It will be placed on a concrete surface with anchors for each corner and for real security the anchors welded and covered with cement to prevent them from being cut. To remove it will require a jack hammer and torch, not so covert. Even if its left on a trailer the tires or the axles can be removed and left on a stand. They aren't going to leave a container full of millions of dollars of equipment in a parking lot with an extension cord running to it.

The 20' container alone has a tare weight of about 4500 pounds. A 1U server can weigh as much as 40 pounds. lets say we have 8 48U racks inside the container thats 48*8*40 which gives us 15,360 pounds. Add to that the weight of a cooling system, power equipment including a UPS, rack enclosures and cable management and you have quite a bit of weight. I am going to conclude that your looking at least 30,000-40,000 pounds for a loaded 20 footer. A forklift to move 30-40,000 pounds is very large and weighs so much that you need a tag trailer or slide axle semi trailer to move the damn thing. Its going to be allot easier to just open the container and rob the equipment. Or possibly use a roll back equipment truck and drag the thing on with a winch assuming it isn't anchored to the ground.

  16. Re:Anything that runs dd-wrt on Wireless Routers for Congested Areas? · · Score: 5, Informative

To better understand the grandparent with respect to antenna gain and maximum power dissipation, here is a little analogy:

The maximum power for the 2.4GHz 802.11x is 100mW. Antennas are usually compared to a reference point which usually is a 1/4 wave dipole antenna. So think of it in terms of compact fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. A 100 watt Incandescent give you a mix of light and heat which is very inefficient (1/4 wave dipole). A compact florescent can give you 400 watts worth of light with the same amount of power the 100 watt incandescent uses (high gain antenna). so a 100W incandescent would nicely illuminate your own driveway but a C.F. lamp would flood the area with light annoying your neighbors while consuming the same amount of power. The power consumption is the same between the two lamps but their ability to radiate that power into light varies greatly. Same applies to antenna design.

Now the reason crappy low gain dipole antennas are used is this, you want to keep interference down so you use a crappy antenna that has little chance of picking up your neighbor's wireless router or microwave. BUT the transceiver has enough transmission power (100mW) to get a decent signal out of that crappy antenna to your clients and vice versa. A 100mW transceiver with a high gain omni directional would not only open your network up to interference from other 2.4GHz devices but you would flood a wider radius with your RF power interfering with other wireless systems. So its legal to get the power to 100mW but only with the crappy dipole. If you used a 3dBi omni @ 100mW it would be comparible to pumping 200mW into the dipole which is illegal. So while it sounds enticing to use high gain antennas on both the clients and AP, its going to cause only more headaches for your network and the networks that surround you.

Hopefully I have explained this properly as its been a while since RF/communications class.

The problem with NOx is that it is formed from excess oxygen and the ~78% nitrogen in the air during the combustion process. So even hydrogen and methane will produce NOx as a side effect when burned. Thats why exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was invented for internal combustion engines. SOx and NOx was a big issue with the new 2007 diesel emissions. The answer was low sulfur fuel, aggressive EGR along with diesel particulate filters. Methane and hydrogen will eliminate sulfur emissions but not NOx unless we can precisely control the amout of air in the combustion process.

But then there are all those older cars and trucks that run on gas or diesel. You cant force everyone to switch to electric, hydrogen or any other fancy new energy storage method. We have proven gas and diesel engines in our vehicles today. We need to keep supporting them until it no longer becomes necessary.

I hope this isn't snake oil, we need an alternative to oil as it wont last forever. If you look at the current crop of alternative energy offerings, none of them offer the same energy density or ease of transport and storage the current fuels give us. Ethanol is a very poor fuel in terms of energy density. Hydrogen is a pain to store and transfer. Small electric cars cant get more than 100 or 200 miles on a single charge and it takes hours to charge up. What about trucks, planes, ships and rail vehicles that need hundreds or thousands of gallons of fuel just to make one trip? Maybe rails can be retrofitted with a large network of transmission lines to keep the power to the rails, but who is going to pay for it? Ships could go nuclear but then there is that whole nuclear security thing.

Oh and wasn't there an article a while back that said they could do the same with sewage?
