FYI there aren't any permanent magnets in an alternator. Instead there is a coil of wire wound around an intricate interlocked set of "teeth" at alternate between north and south. The coil is fed via the slip rings and needs the battery to get it up and running. Thats why a dead battery will leave you stranded, the alternator cannot self-excite. OT I know but a good tid-bit

My brother and his friend are the real hardcore players usually getting kicked/banned for "cheating" even though they arent. 18. Re:Diesel is the future on Vinod Khosla Talks Ethanol · · Score: 1

The 2007 emissions have two separate approaches to reduce emissions. Now I am going by what will be used in heavy trucks so bear with me. In Europe they will use SCR (selective catalytic reduction in addition to EGR). This entails having a urea solution (called Ad Blue) injected into the exhaust stream downstream of the turbo. This will react with the exhaust gas in the catalytic converter to lessen the amount of harmful nitrogen compounds and other particulates. This will entail new trucks to have a small tank for the Ad Blue and all fuel stations to be equipped with ad blue pumps and storage equipment.

In North America the system will be built around an afterburner catalytic converter (in addition to EGR) that will burn off the rest of the harmful compounds. They will cost thousands top replace and need to be cleaned every 100-150 thousand miles. For some reason this system requires more fuel to be burnt to reduce the emissions. I think it has to do with some diesel being injected into the afterburner catalytic converter. Each system has its own draw backs and benefits but it is still a major pain in the ass. After the 2002 emissions rules went into effect allot of people running heavy truck diesels had allot of engine problems.

Funny thing is this will impact our daily lives as every product delivered comes by truck. when it costs a carrier more to operate a truck that cost is passed down to the consumer.

They actually did do this. I forget where I saw it (either on a PBS special or Popular Science) but it worked as you described. The liquid nitrogen was allowed to expand rappidly and the high pressure was used to run a simple single cylinder piston engine. needed a really big heavy insulated tank though. I think MIT made it.

I also forgot to mention that the people who want preformance dont need to worry. An electric motor can devlope peak torque at almost any rpm even when the rotor is locked. So smoking gas/diesel cars off the line will be easy :)

  21. Re:Who killed the electric car? on Smithsonian Removes EV1 Exhibit · · Score: 1

What allot of people don't think about when it comes to electric cars is recharge time and weight. With an internal combustion engine simply pour your fuel into the tank and go. Fueling up takes a minute or two depending on tank size and your off. Batteries can take hours to charge. Who wants to run out of battery power and have to wait hours to get charged when you can have a tow truck gas you up in a minute? Also batteries have a life span, and depending on how fast you charge and discharge them affects their life span. Batteries are also very heavy and easily out weigh a 30 gallon gas tank when full. Plus as you drive a liquid fuel powered vehicle you loose weight as you use the fuel where in an electric car your battery weighs half a ton no matter what your charge level is.

Yea fuel cells will fix all that but progress is slow at the moment and will require a totally different fuel infrastructure (depends on the fuel used though).

Now I just have a simple phone that I have a few custom ringers I made on it as well as a wall paper, phone book and clock. It has gps but I prefer gps on a larger screen.

My thing is if they got camera/multimedia phones right like:
-High quality camera with at leat 2MP or 1600x1200
-removable flash card that stores the pictures
-external screen that acts like a viewfinder, great for taking pictures of yourself with someone
    -simple usb connectivity
-an mp3 player that also works off the flash card that would work on a bluetooth stereo headset that auto pauses the music on a call. I could ride my bike with my phone in my bag listening to some tunes and take a call easily without fumbling with the phone or wires all over.
-maybe a video service BUT it has to be based on open standars and can to connect to any video server even one I might host. Also simple video recording to the flash card that can record longer then 15 seconds.
-good 3 + day standby time.

Hell there might be such a phone now but im not that on top of those things.

$250? Yea that sounds like the good ol days when Super Nintendo cost 200 at launch. And if you want to adjust for inflation I bet its about even. If thats the price, Nintendo will definatly appeal to those with less money. A smaller investment in the hardware leaves you with more money to purchase software which IMHO is way more important then the console. I know a kid who spent 800 on his 360 at launch and didnt have any money left for a single game. He just played his old xbox games for a month before he had enough saved up to buy a 360 game.
