The nerdier and nerdier I got over the years the more I moved from just lurking to posting. Up until now, I pretty much just posted at my forums but now I occasionally post on Slashdot and Digg. You read stuff on the sites enough and eventually you want to respond.

Maybe the citizens of that city will get lucky and the mayor will come down and tell him to knock it off if for nothing else other than the fact that he's wasting money. It's been proven that if eroding our civil liberties won't get a politician's attention, money will. That being said, I wish someone on one of those damn news networks calling each other UnAnmerican(tm) about this or that would come together and agree that things like THIS are un-American...but there I go again...being an idealist. *sigh*

You'd think I would have learned better by now but the sad part is that most of these sensational things are entirely believable. It's really kind of depressing.

On another note, who the hell writes these summaries? Do they just have really awful reading comprehension or does all the sensational shit just float to the top? I suppose it's a combination of those 2 things isn't it?

Some of us have to try and hack this stuff just to use it AT ALL. I got a Blu-ray drive for my media center PC (it runs Vista even). Everything is plugged in all nice and neat. I tested one movie and it worked okay. I put in American Gangster...every single player I try to use to play this movie immediately crashes and will not play. I tried installing AnyDVD HD and basically used every single hack I could conceive to try to get this damn thing to play.

After about an hour or 2 of cursing and making my wife irritated over how mad I was getting, I turned off my computer, ripped out the blu ray drive, shoved it back into a box, and shipped it right back to Newegg and even got them to comp the restocking fee. Know what I bought to replace it? A hard drive. I can download my blurays compressed at about 9 gigs a pop and I have no issues playing them at all. This is what they made a potentially paying customer into. I generally will pay for things when they deserve it, but I won't buy nearly as much now because they pissed me off.

I'm a hypocrite because I still buy some Blurays (I have a PS3), but I will not buy nearly as many as I would have. Just the movies I really really like. I'm kind of afraid of using my PS3 drive too much for anything other than games...I had a PS2 and I know all about Sony's optical drives.

Why do people just make things like this up? I never understand it. It's not like someone else isn't going to come along and know that you're full of shit, so why bother lying when it's so easy to find your lie. If you say something without looking it up, someone else will...or even better, someone else will test it.

I am SO tired of people spreading FUD around like facts when they haven't done any research or they know they are lying outright and that the contradictions to their lie are easily found. Granted people are stupid for taking things like this at face value, but really that's the problem isn't it? Some people may be sheep, but it's annoying when people like you manipulate them into thinking things aren't true. It's kind of like all the FUD I keep seeing about the health care bill. Surely people can find VALID criticisms for it instead of resorting to lying. There are plenty to be had. Quit being assholes.

I am fully confident that people on Slashdot will always be screaming their heads off about something...and most likely they'll be pretty justified. But I get what he's saying because I'm tired of seeing Fox News and all the "conservatives" around the country come out to protest after sitting around doing jack shit while Bush was raping the country the last 8 years. It's also quite easy to get confused about who is doing that or who has been screaming all along. You don't really know but I know when I see a lot of the people I see protesting now, most of them didn't give a flying fuck about what Bush was doing and only care now because Fox News is having a hissy fit all over the air about it.

I'm sorry, but I see this response a lot and I honestly have to say...have you ever actually run a website before? Alienating your potential audience over something like this is not really the best way to go about things. Yeah, maybe put up a notice somewhere about it, but really, telling them to just screw off is not actually a solution. It just makes your site look like crap to all the people using IE. The people that still use IE6 and such aren't the type of people to know or care why your site is broken...they just think you have a broken site.

I completely understand your hate of IE...I can't tell you how many times I've had to go "fix" my website designs because of IE6...it drives me completely insane. On the other hand, you simply cannot ignore these things. Being a good web designer means you unfortunately need to compensate.

I don't have the money to pay for a different phone, switch providers, and deal with the new provider's crap. That's crap. None of them care. They have the same base of customers slowly rotating among them...why would they care?

The free market does not regulate itself when you've got the big boys playing. In theory, it apparently should work, but in practice it doesn't nor could it. Companies will leverage every advantage they can to make money for their shareholders and they aren't going to stop doing things until the government MAKES them stop doing it.
