Well; you jest, but this has already been addressed by the FAA: http://cryptome.org/faa021307.htm. Under this policy, I believe that you could be arrested for flying an aircraft like this without explicit authorization from the government. I do aerial photography with rc helicopters for my wife's real-estate company and you wouldn't believe the crap I have to deal with when people see that I have a flying camera in their neighborhood.
Personally, I'd rather use purpose built avionics in my models than try to jerry-rig lego sensors. I don't want to be liable if the electronics fail in my aircraft and it damages someone's property or worse.

Oh, and as an aside; a few years ago my wife did buy me a $300 flashlight. A beautiful Surefire that attaches to the bottom of my .45. As it turns out, that $300 flashlight saved both our lives late one night when a couple of drug-crazed thugs invaded our home while we were sleeping. I'll take a $300 flashlight over a very small retirement contribution any day.

Why have 6 mac bots just because they're cool when you could have 600 Windows bots that you could actually do something with?

As far as I can tell, the net result of the shuttle program (Hubble aside) is a better understanding of how the human body reacts to low gravity. Have there been any meaningful discoveries from research by humans in space or is the shuttle program simply expensive (and dangerous) "joy-rides" for a very select few? I have a hard time believing that the best minds at nasa couldn't devise a more cost effective way of maintaining Hubble (and other satellites) using robotics. Wouldn't the money saved be better spent on more useful research?

But, yes; I agree. I want a specific device to do one thing and do it well. I want an mp3 player that just plays music, and does so with the best audio quality possible. I want a cell phone that just makes phone calls and will allow me to walk around the house without dropping calls. I don't need to take the world's worst photographs and videos with my phone, that's what my camera is for. I don't want to watch videos on my mp3 player when I commute, that's what my laptop's for.

Features sell, however. The best mp3 player to hit the market yet (imho) was the Rio Karma. Rio was forced out of the market because they just focused on making simple mp3 players, rather than throwing a bunch of poorly developed bells and whistles into their players, and couldn't compete with the ipod (although I don't think they would have done much better if they had). Given the option, the average person will buy the product that does "this and this and this and this..." instead of the one that "just does that" regardless of whether or not they will ever actually do "this and this and this" with it.
