Do we really only perceive biologists as madmen who want to do evil experiments for the heck of it? I've seen this trend spiral out of control, and frankly, I am ASHAMED.
Well, as other posters have noted, the tag is being used more for its humor value than anything else. However, western civilization has long had an ambivalent relationship with science. If you go back as far as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, you can see the general theme of scientists learning things that 'man was never meant to know', and of course the hubris that comes from it.
I would have figured that they would skip robots and go directly to clones.
Seriously, though, this sounds like an AI issue rather than a robot issue. If the robot is controlled by some guy with a joystick back at headquarters, you really haven't changed anything. If it's self-controlled, then you have to take into account that there will be bugs, and eventually some milbot will massacre a village somewhere.
Because Apatosaurus was described first. According to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the first name has priority. There are occasional exceptions to the rules (Boa constrictor comes to mind), but for the vast majority of cases, the ICZN is 'The Rule Book'.
A large group of chimpanzees has produced the collected works of Shakespeare four times faster than the same number of college students, and with fewer spelling errors.
There is still nothing like curling up with a good book. Maybe someday people will do all their reading from a computer screen, a la TNG, but I doubt it.
It'll be interesting to see if this drives a trend towards smaller, COTS parts for these satellites. Personally, I'm excited about this. This could be the first step towards an all-in-one probe (a la Star Trek) like device.
It's too bad they didn't win the full prize, but at least they now have lucrative job opportunities in the booming spam industry. I keep getting spammed with Viagra ads and illegal replica watches, but I really want all of the hardcore pr0n spam.
First, HD-DVD had the early sales leads, months in fact. Then after Blu-Ray was released, it quickly overtook HD-DVD sales and hasn't looked back since. If HD-DVD was 'setup to win the race', it should have kept its sales lead. Unfortunately for HD-DVD, most studios are either supporting both formats, or are Blu-Ray only.
Second, your so-called facts are anecdotes at best, and irrelevant at worst. Release scheduling changes week-to-week and month-to-month. If HD-DVD were really winning the race, then I'd expect that you wouldn't see Blu-Ray releases for months, like those for the PSP.
Then please explain how Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD nearly 2-1 YTD, and 60-40 over the lifetime of the formats (source: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/).
Exactly. Every time George Lucas or Star Wars comes up, you can just sense the impending flamage like a disturbance in the Force. These people seem to think that the original trilogy was some sort of exercise in great film making. Sorry, it just wasn't. It was the same whiz-bang special effects fest that the prequel trilogy is, simply with older SFX tech. They just need to get over themselves.
For the record: Star Wars was the first movie that I ever saw in a theater back in '77. I've seen both the OT and PT more times than I can remember.

We're for and against paper ballots, and for and against touch screens - As long as the outcome is the one we want.
We just need to buy a few of these, then build a ship around them. I hear Enterprise is a good name...

Get off my lawn!
Maybe we can find out the location of Dick Cheney's Undisclosed Location.
It scares away the Old Ones.
That puts you in the rarefied air of the 'Dream User' category.

So that's where Jesus hid them all!
I think you meant the Old Ones.
A large group of chimpanzees has produced the collected works of Shakespeare four times faster than the same number of college students, and with fewer spelling errors.
Agreed.

I guess restoring from backups is out of the question.
You forgot a few things:
+ Mass Graves aren't being filled
You're right. The dead are just being left at the side of the road now. I guess you need a government to bury the bodies.
+ Females are attending School
They were in Iraq before the war, too.
+ The Rape Rooms Are Shut Down
I think you forgot about Abu Ghraib, or whatever the next prison PR disaster will be.
+ Saddam isn't paying $25,000 to families of Palestinian Suicide Bombers
Now the guys behind the suicide bombers don't need to pay people to kill Americans; they have enough volunteers that'll do it for free.
+ Uday and Qusay Hussien are dead
+ Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - Captured
+ Chemical Ali - Captured
+ Abu Musab al-Zarqawi: DEAD.
Replace 'old' bad guys with new, living bad guys. Rinse, repeat.
I guess you drank enough of the neocon Kool-Aid to parrot the Administration's talking points.

Ever hear the term "flash in the pan"? 'nuff said.
I couldn't have described HD-DVD better myself.
You've got this totally backwards.

An even bigger landslide victory for the Democrats?
that proper grammar is optional
Grammar? On Slashdot, only Grammar Nazis use grammar!
I guess you could call five people listening to vinyl, up from three people, a resurgence.
