You're being deliberately obtuse. Here are some of the possible benefits I can think of immediately:

    • There is a wealth of contact information made up of people who have shared their phone number.
    • Not having to dual key or type those contacts from facebook
    • Not having to run Skype's resource hungry client
    • Not having to use Skype's nightmare-ish firefox plugin
    • See when friends are online with regards to facebook chat, meaning that you know they're likely to be able to take your call.

Keep this line for later, you can include it in your future posts:

I'm too unimaginative to appreciate X and so I think X is useless to everyone.

  9. Re:the problem is algorithmic trading... on London Stock Exchange Finishes Switch To Linux · · Score: 2

The issue facing markets isn't that. It's algorithmic trading

You couldn't be more wrong. The absolutely opposite is true. Algorithmic trading is exactly what the exchanges want and here's why:

Increased trading means increased fees. Exchanges charge a fee for each and every order. MTFs such as Chi-X and Turquoise grabbed market share by having a clever pricing structure based on whether your order is sitting on the order book and filled (passive) or your order is immediately filled against something already at the top of the order book (aggresive). The MTFs actually reimbursed fees if you are passive and charged you less that the LSE in any case for being aggressive. This attracted huge amounts of liquidity from the primaries and encouraged market making behaviour. Throw in that they often had better technology since it was all brand new. This was all circa 2007.

For some reason, whenever a subject about trading comes up on Slashdot, some of you love to find a way to fit in some algo bashing. Likely the same people that mindlessly bash Obama irrespective of the topic. Wouldn't you be happier over at 911truth?

Fortunately, there isn't any rape in this game. Even Fox News wouldn't claim that. They just claim that seeing "Gang Bang" come up on the screen as an achivement when you kill a gang of people will cause your teenage sons to go out and rape people. You can draw your own conclusions about that.

I don't see why Nintendo can't get in on the action too. They have a whole catalogue of wii games that would port quite well to touch interfaces. They have arguably the best legacy content in the world. They could also be that low cost developer by buying up or hiring small dev teams.

Nintendo's comments remind me of the way the incumbent airlines decried people booking low cost flights online with the budget airlines, or the record companies negativity towards iTunes, or book publishers with Amazon. Sometimes changes to your business model are forced upon you. Blame the internet if you want, but you've got to move with the times.

Certain games suit controller input and other are better with mouse and keyboard. I actually own SNES, Genesis, N64 and PSX console controllers with their USB adapters. I don't see that the experience is too different when playing and emu with the original controller to actually playing the console itself.

Although there are lots of counter-examples, those games good with control pads include platformers, beat-em-ups, driving games and arcade games in general. Mouse and keyboard is best suited to RPG, RTS, Flight Sim (additionally with a proper joystick), Graphical Adventure and debatably, FPS in my opinion.
