In C, critical issues like threading will be platform dependant or non-existent, in Java it's consistent and standard.
While I agree with the sentiment of what you're saying, Java threading is not able to be standard because of platform differences. For example, thread priorities work differently depending on the OS. However, the same code should run on all platforms, just with a potential for minutely different behaviour.
What's interesting is that you can't have thread priorities at all on Linux unless you're running as root. I assume this applies to all software, not just Java apps. I didn't know that...
Yes, when I was in Japan the lag to Europe made logmein and VNC a bit of a chore to use. Some kind of tunnelling will make for a better user experience in my opinion.
It sounds like the type of thing that's caused by a cordless phone that's too powerful. Perhaps an import from another country. 8:30 to 10:00 is possibly the time a local house wife will be on the phone with her mother. Just a thought...
So we're saying that no-one has surrounded a phone in aluminium before, not because they were terrible designers but because it's a bloody stupid idea?
If you haven't already, get a router with QoS. Next, when he's in some other room 'maximising his bandwidth', set his max connections to 30 and his upload to 1/4 of your upload speed. You might also consider Tomato or DD-WRT if you have a compaitible router.
If you don't mind me saying so but on the one hand you seem to complain that a visual programming tool like Kettle is too hard to use. And at the same time you choose to ignore the tools to configure Mondrian properly. I'm sure there is some kind of pattern here.

Yes there is a pattern. The commonality is that the documentation for almost all of the pentaho suite is verbose but devoid of content. It's impossible to find documentation on the things you actually need documentation for. I tried to set up a ROLAP server that we could use to replace Cognos with, however I gave up because it wasn't worth the effort required to work everything out. There aren't enough hours in the day.
Thank you, Grisnakh, for helping to perpetuate the stereotype that all Slashdot posters are scrawny, basement dwelling nerds that can't participate in activities that most well-adjusted human beings can enjoy.
How in the hell did you get that from what he said? Surely it should be...

People like the GP have no idea what acually caused the banking crisis and assume it's absolutely everything that banks are involved in. The banking crisis was caused by credit derivatives and over-exposure to shitty mortgages, not trading in equities. So many people here fail to understand that.
I think that was the idea. A sort of weird Dijkstra parody.

This is a good comparison of java threading models.

These jokes are a Knuth around my neck.
Isn't this what they try to do with their political history?
That's Knuth to me...

Surely on this site we can talk about this kind of temperature in terms of Kelvin?
The web has always been slow. Anyone who remembers the Netscape days will atest to that.
Not worth it to who? It's not worth it to me. Noscript please.

I'm confused. If I want to preserve Star Raiders, can't I just use some digital archive technology and an emulator?
Pressure from Apple. Jobs isn't a fan of the term 'unlimited'. That's why the providers in the UK have changed their policy at least.

It gives you something to complain about so that you're not off annoying someone else.

The stock market has nothing to do with Asset Backed Swaps, CDOs and other credit derivitives. Come back when you know what you're talking about.

I'm genuinely interested in what the others are. Care to share a couple?
(fark and 4chan need not apply. :) )
Yes and knowing that you can get out whenever you want might also change how well you cope with being in there.
Arrgh! How can I unsee it?!!
