I used Opensuse 10,10.1 and was going to upgrade to.2 when they made this deal with MS. I had very good experiences with their software. Yast2 has to be the most comprehensive gui based admin tools I've used in any OS. (all hobby/curiosity, no problem solving) Port it to Debian and the difference between debian-based distros and windows will be 3d games.
As a education student we have been 'encouraged' to have a "futures"(sic) perspective. Part of the "futures" ideology/mythology (I don't know that it is developed/tested well enough to be a theory) is that technology is only one part of the singularity. Sociology is potentially the larger part, with other vectors affecting. Of course (they imply structured central hubs of officially vetted knowledge)"education is the catalyst for it(The Singularity) to occur"
So while technology singularity is essentially occurring, we require several other aspects of human endeavour to "accelerate to the event horizon"
Apologies for the jargon/misused physics; I only quoted THEM
then most likely the hardware is faulty and Linux just doesn't push it as hard, or perhaps masks the problem rather than trapping it and dying immediately (which is the safest course of action).
So (GNU)linux potentially could, instead of masking the problem, have a applet that flashes red and says something like...
The %hardware% you are using is causing errors. Please, backup regularly and start saving to buy replacement %hardware%
Not true. I'm "required" to have a windows OS to do my tax using software, particularly if I wish to do it online. sure there are workarounds. But they are workarounds.
It's racism in software!
Education is fine, it's the requirement to be certified to pick up pencils that I object to. We have gone from people doing anything to get a degree, to people needing a degree to do anything:s
Thanks, I personally do build my own boxes. However, I have relatives I would love to be weaned off Windows in particular but proprietary in general. Their biggest complaint? "No one supports linux" (I live in other towns)
Also, how the heck did this one make it through the filters? Who the heck cares how long it takes people to set up their system? Although I will brag that I can assemble a new box in under 10 minutes without troubleshooting.
/. news for nerds, stuff that matters.
The comments seem reasonably active, must be stuff that matters. Considering the previous story
Developers: IBM the Next Great Software Company? on the front page has 94 comments
Science: Massive Star Burps, Then Explodes 82
They are nerd stories! (Too many stories on/. are business/advert articles, imo.)
would be to use MS's system settings transfer option
On the subject of nerds... MS?
(Before you get on your high horse, I don't qualify either. I'm a wanabe nerd!)
I am opposed to this, and I am running Ubuntu!
If it said "Can I tell Microsoft you didn't wish to install Windows Genuine Advantage" sure that would be fine. I would be less avid in discouraging my influencees to install a decent and reasonable O/S (They insist it is too hard as they ask me to solve problems with Windows.:s I now have a standard response.:)
If one says do not install, one means do not install. Users WANT to control the computer that said users bought! There should be no obligation to install/update/alter behaviour unless said behaviour is illegal or immoral (It is terrible that they are distinct differences.) and the only obligation would be to stop.
I do understand that I am displaying my ID the world, but it is part of my implied co-operation to be a part of the 'internet community' or whatever it is called now. Reading my credit card # in my pocket remotely without my knowledge isn't. MS can have my ip, not my hardware/software details. I don't mind people knowing who I am, I mind people being dishonest and sly with me.
My opposition to our Beloved Microsoft is because I love quality and morality. If they start behaving reasonably I'd only have a paradigm to argue for.
I'm a taxi driver in lil Rockhampton,Qld,Aus. I had a salesman from Oracle in my cab today telling about this! He was selling software to our local uni. Funnily enough, he seemed sad that there are company with more dosh to through around than some countries GDP.
So... the experience I had that I would have to select certain hardware components (network cards) for my computer to be compatible with vista means vista isn't ready for the desktop (I'd agree but more because it is built on the wrong principles)? I had to do the same for XP. (an older computer, video cards.)
If you re-read your Australian Constitution, you will find it is the responsibility of Australian politicians to ensure foreign corporations, especially those originating in the U.S., have free access to all aspects of Australian citizens lives including personal data, encouraging reducing levels of value to said citizens. The way you said, one may come to think that the politicians are working for the Australian people!

Yes; the end of the world is going to be bathed in fire. Then God is going to recreate the heavens and the earth.
does that help?
the real reason lies here. http://www.jwz.org/doc/worse-is-better.html
No, they are all over at X.org

translucent = almost transparent to not opaque
so, no, technically it would be translucent aluminum
It was stored on a Windows box?
botnet

hmmm... y'know... it would seem to me, the article is about....
My god! IPv6 in space! The new bit!

Fair enough. That wasn't cool, wasn't witty, didn't work. I apologise.

No! Australians we have a winner! (Okay I haven't done ANY price comparisons - but they do support linux. vgcomputing.com.au
I'm having trouble doing so in Australia.
try undisclosed/unpublished in place of undocumented

Maybe scientists are coming to a sad realisation.
Aye, We should be living down there by now :( If I can't get to space, I want my underwater city and submersible transport.
Yeah, I did! I mistook it for a fiction.
