Most of that article is rightwing propganda with a little on tech to gloss it over. Here is a list of ways we can do to help....
1. The duh answer of them all of course is increased school funding. I relize however, if everyone got a decent education, we would have very few people willing to join the military and those who did would join one loaded with officers, and no cannon fodder, I mean elisted men.
2. Not everyone needs to get a four year degree. There needs to be many more professional opportunities for people with 2 year degrees. It would increase tax revenue to have a better paid population, and reduce the burden on four year universities who can better use the money on people who need to spend the time in college.
3. Companies that spend a sigifigant portion (~75%) of thier R&D money in Univeristy based Labs would recive an huge tax break.
4. Medical Advancement: Place a 20 blackout on the production of generics and in return drug companies must reduce prices by 75%. New drug prices are high in this country because a company must recoup the billions it spent on R&D in the first 3 years to make any sort of profit, because after 5 it can be made by anyone dirt cheap.
This give companies much more capital and incentive to innovate instead of copy what the other guy did and sell it cheaper.
5. Government Funded Hard Science: If we rely only on corperations to fund research, then we are going to be limmited to innovations that will make a profit, and we will be worthless as a civilization.
For all those of you out there with a Mac check your system profiler and I am pretty confidant that your CD/CDRW will be a Sony manufactured drive. Apple should go to them today, and threaten to find a new supplier. Sony will have to choose between faking the loss of money from copyright infringment or losing money for real by losing customers.
Oh and Apple if you don't want to do this e-mail me and we can set up a time to replace this faulty drive that won't play my music.
Not that anyone really pays much attention to science in America, but as long as the information about what is going on in Nano-tech is out there I am 100% behind the research. Really the only reason to keep it secret is if you are doing weapons research, and do we really need any more ways to kill each other, I mean nukes already do a damn good job. Science will always go on, leagal or not, because it has to, it is part of human nature, but it's not worth it if it does not benifit mankind.
Most progressive legislation like this is doomed to fail in California. I envision a situation similar to an insurance bill that failed to pass two years ago.
In 2004 proponents of the bill will spend a hundred million dollars on getting the bills passed. There will be suprisingly little opposition to the bill, and perhaps support from unlilkly sources such as oil companies, because they want to look like the good guys. The bills will pass by a very narrow margin, because most people hate to pass bills that spend money. The next several years will be spent in commities (chaired and staffed by "transportion experts aka auto and oil execs") at great expence and on studies.
In 2006 lobbying firms from companies who faked support for the bills will put nearly identical bills on the ballot. They will then spend 10 million dollars on a campain to defeat the bill and nullify the previous one. Since the bill has already passed once, there will be no great large support for re-passage of the bills and they will get crushed in the election.
This exact same thing happened in 2000 when insurance lobbyists defeated thier own insurance bill which was identical to one passed by Califorina legisature to curtail abuse by the insurance compainies. They only needed to spend a few bucks (~10 mil) on some commercials talking about ambulance chasers and insurance fraud to get a landlide victory and a windfall for the insurace companies.
Corona to Irvine and back on the 91 whether you use the toll road or not is a crappy route for sure. I personally love the Metrolink. Having gotten caught on the preiously mentioned toll road driving just a little too fast forced me to take the train for a while. I found it to be a very good experience. My stress level dropped greatly, and got to work on time much more often. If they spent some of that $10b on extending the hours of Metrolink and bringing down the high cost of riding, it would be perfect.
{arogant sarcasm} How dare you insult Mr. Adams like that. As an ardant Athiest he would be quite offended at the notion of an afterlife. {/arogant sarcasm} While I personally disagree with this, it is just one of many many quirks/traits/sidesplittingly-funny-nurosies that made Douglas Adams who he was. Now that he is dead and gone lets us thank (Anyone but God) and join The Great Propeht Zarquon in saying.... So long and thanks for all the laughs
As stated above, it was never considered canon the series and Frank Herbert said so himself. He called it an "entertaing read". Large parts of it conflict what Frank Herbert had written, including the appenix at the end of the anniversery edition, which gave background for his universe.
So the Simmerilion should have never been put together and published? I found it equally as enjoyable as Lord of the Rings. Great writers trancend death, and their stories should too.
I agree. In Dune: House Corrino, the spice substitue Adjuamal (which was very unpredictable) is given to a guild navigator, who nearly dies and strands the guild highliner millions of light years away from the empire. While they are out there, he says that they must leave quickly because they have been spotted by the "anicent enemy, the future enemy". I don't know if this is what Frank Herbert had planned, but I assume the machines are that enemy. It would make would explain the need for the golden path, and it would necesitate the writing of these novels.
BTW: I loved have enjoyed every one of the Dune novels, except perhaps Dune Messiah, which was little more than an epilouge/prolouge for the previous and next books.
Try reading Anderson's new series Saga of the Seven Suns. This is a very very good book. Whe the trilogy is complete, I belive it will be remebered as one of the great sci-fi tales of all time.
First not all other states are up to CA standards and do need the additive, but there is a big difference between producing an Super Low Emition fuel cell car and putting in an additive just so your friends can turn a profit. Sadly it is just short sighted greed on the part of the growers. Instead of funding the Bush they could invest more in fuel cell tech and reap far more profit in the future when oil becomes a thing of the past.
Actually Bush is more that thrilled to force any form of Methanol powered device down on us. All those states out there with too much corn money and too many electoral votes have the White House in thier pockets. Currently Bush is trying to punish California by making us add Methanol to our Gasoline to improve emmisions, despite the fact that the gasoline sold in California is alreay below federal limits without any additives. It is just another stupid revenue stream for the good ol' boys.
This could turn into a big cottage industry for local stores. For $10 a month you could have a pair of fuel cells out, and once they are gone you drop them up and pick up two more. I sure as hell would pay the extra for the longer battery life.
I would assume that there are a few slashdot users out there, who work in different mainstream media outlets. Maybe your in the news department or in tech support. Try and bring this event to the attention of a news director, or reporter. Digital Music is hip and sexy, but the DMCA is invisible. There is what about a 1% penetration in to the American conciousness about it. Sadly nobody cares unless Stone Phillips tells them to. Lets get the word out people.
I just finished a very good book by Robert Ludlum called "The Promethus Deception". The statement "only criminals have something to hide" drives the plot behind this espionage thriller. It's a must read for anyone who's more than just a littel worried about Big Brother.
I think you are close to hitting it right on the nose. I am a mac guy thru and thru, and I much prefer Slashdot, especially in the past 6 months or so. I think most of the reaction on Macslash is due to the fact that it's main population and audience is not the Alpha Geeks like Slashdot. Most of the people spend all day at work hearing people with no clue about computer belittle the Mac. I like most Slashdotter's can launch into a technical argument to make their heads spin, but most of the people on Macslash just have to grin and bear it for fear that some MCOL (Microsoft Certified Operating Lifeform) will come and take there computer away. MacSlash is the only place they can go to keep from getting flamed to death for every comment they make.
Yeh my favorite part of the correct and eficient translation was the 10 commandments. Almost every copy of the first KJV was burned, because the sixth commandment was, "Though shalt commit adultary".
Apple has a decent selection of calenders up on their site at . They have lots of great sports and movie release calenders that you can subscribe to for free.
Apple does include this functionality in OSX. The vast majority of the apps I used in OS9 I have found free replacments for In OSX. Those I haven't work just fine in the OSX's classic enviroment. Except games. And if gaming is you primary concern, don't upgrade to 10.2 until the game makers catch up.
Pehaps I am a missing something, but I can't boot into OS9 now from 10.2. My remaining system folder is greyed out and unselectable from the Startup disk control panel. I'm sure I could get around this booting from an OS9 CD, but thats just a pain in the ass. (But worth it considering how much better Warcraft III preforms under 9.) Apple should leave booting to 9 as an option. I understand not including it on new computers or including with a copy of Jaguar, It is the only way to drag some people along with resorting to draconian licensing practices. But for people that already run it let them run concurantly as long as they like.
Quit making fun of Hyderabad!!!! I went to the Royal College of Magic there. We are not a party magic college.
