  1. wireless earphones (and Apple's Airpods in particular) are a runaway success and consumers rate these products with high levels of satisfaction

Sure they rate them highly ... until the battery starts dying. That's the whole point of the article.

There were plenty that looked just like this. As soon as the page came up I laughed in recognition.

Try Philip Greenspun's website [greenspun.com] for an inkling of what a functional site looked like in the 1990s.

Yes, there were plenty of single-guy-hobbyist sites that looked like that. But websites promoting a movie or music or was trying to be hip ... any site that was pulling out all the stops ... would not have looked anything like Philip Greenspun's website.

A few years ago there was a contest to see which robot could shoot the most balls into a target in a given amount of time.

The winning robot simply covered up its opponents target, then leisurely put one shot into its own.

They were forced to give the prize to the "cheating" robot since it had fulfilled the letter of the victory condition.

I did a quick search and couldn't find a reference to the article, sorry!

You mean I can't install something from the "app store" and run it?

It's actually easier to do that on Linux.

It's easy (but not "easier") IF the app you want happens to be cataloged in the software manager, and IF the latest release happens to be available there. Even so, upgrading can still be a hassle.

And don't expect much success convincing users to go to a shell and type apt-get commands.

  12. Do what I do and watch old b/w movies on youtube

Yes! In those old movies the mood is calmer and more relaxing, without the "in your face" attitude that most modern movies come with. Stylistically, there are more long takes, which I enjoy. The modern style is lots of quick cuts, so the director can force you to look at what he/she wants you to! It's exhausting and annoying ...

I've also subscribed to Filmstruck, which has a well chosen selection of old and foreign movies that are difficult or impossible to find.

  13. So, you're in the .00000000000000000000000000000001 percent of Android users that have gotten mire than an updated or two.

Rubbish. My Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (last of the line with a replaceable battery!) was originally released in late 2014. It still regularly receives updates.

  14. That's exactly right, corporations do not like losing money. So, it will be a cold calculation of how many dollars it saves not to have a crash

Corporations don't "like" anything ... they're not people. (This isn't Mitt Romney posting, is it?)

The ones making the decisions of how much to spend on security have their own self-interest at heart. So ...

    1. CEO cuts spending on safety
    2. Short term profit rises
    3. Stock skyrockets
    4. CEO is hailed as turn around specialist
    5. CEO retires, pocketing millions
    6. Because of deferred maintenance (see #1), planes have more accidents
    7. CEO, basking in retirement, sees start of televised report about plane crashes. Lifts remote. Changes channel.

  15. Gotta have the right balance on WSJ: There's An 'Inexorable' Trend Towards Working Remotely (foxbusiness.com) · · Score: 1

Engineering ... those are roles that don't lend themselves very well to remote work.

Ha ... what a laugh. I do plenty of engineering from home and it works out just fine.

Now I don't do all my engineering from home, in fact I'm in the office more than half the time. Ideally I'd like to bring that down to 2-3 days max a week, but for now it's 3.5 days in the office per week. There are times when you need to get several people together to discuss things, and it's always easier if you're at the same table and waving your arms at the same whiteboard. And there are also a lot of conversations you end up having in passing that just wouldn't happen if you were at home. (Of course this goes either way ... some of the conversations are worth having, either for you or the other party, while others are a waste of time.)

So, like most things in life ... you've gotta get the balance right.
