I used dia for UML. I know of 2 other tools out there. One that does the code generation and one that does the importing of code into a dia uml diagram. I found both on freshmeat. But I just installed Umbrello and it seems that it is far better than both that I have used.
Wireless security is really bad. Ok. By wireless I mean 802.11b (aka WiFi). You should maybe think of 802.11a . Which is a wireless standard that is more buisness oriented (High bandwidth) hell of a lot better encription.
WiFi uses WEP (wired equivilant protocol(?)) to encrypt every packet that is send out. WEP, is know to have many weaknesses. There haev been many document exploits (airsnort is one of them). And any script kiddy can use it without using the keyboard.
- Even though, these 2 formats will save layout, you will still lose alot of it.
- HTML sucks for printers. (Especially when it comes to page seperation )
- RTF files have a tendency to be oversised when you embed images in your files. Try this: Type a document in word, put 7 large images, save as.doc and as.rtf now compare the file sizes.
Native formats are the best thing for making shure that you keep the intended formating.
I think the issue is freedom. Freedom of choice. Why use Ms Office? Because some people would prefer using it.
Take my grandmother as an example . I got her to use a computer and Ms Word. I don't think she want to learn a new system (even if it's not difficult for you and I). But the thing is, it would be cool if she could send me a recipe for her brownies using an open format, while typing it on a close system.
The huge problem in canada, are the side walks tha break, or roads that constantly crack. That is due to the expanding in summer and contracting in winter... Would it be possible to mix cement with the compond so that it counters the effect, or at least dimishes the damages ?
The same company that make tanning oils (to get your skin darker) make skin "bleachers" (for for indian/african market).... I wonder if this company will make an "Anti-tanning" pill, that will make your skin whiter?
I think that this new specification in not necesarally design for HTML "programer" but more for ppl who create wysiwyg editor. When their "save as html" option saves as XHTML2.0 then you will see more pages on the web. Let's face it, 90% of the pages on the web are created by wysiwyg editor(dreamweaver, front page , word, star/open office). _Most_ ppl don't use notepad, let alone emacs or vi. Even if I use emacs, and most of us use emacs or vi, doesn't mean that most ppl who publish on the web use a text editor. What I am trying to say is that, the first step to acceptance is the browser, then the wysiwyg editor, then the "html coders".
This is such a pointless article. They give no insight on the technology. And one of the major points: The inventor is a teenager. Ok... Maybe if they write about it in a couple of years when the patent passes it might not be a wast of time/bandwidth to read that article. There was no insight only saying saying that he used random numbers and cartoons. And oh yeah, they tried to sell it. If you are going to write about a tech, please.... please describe the technology, isn't that the point ?
It's easier to have an email spam filter. Actually fast to automate that then try to write a program that automaticaly scan incoming (physical) mail, and determin wether it's junk or not.
A format where the specs or available to the public. I guess something like what Abi word does. Save it as XML with dtd. See, that way you can export to the web and not loose anything.
I wonder what is going to happen to the.doc format. I hope that ppl will start using open formats to comunicate important documents. If more govs do the switch. I wonder what will happen to closed file formats.... ( or will M$ port office to *nix )
Answer to 3). I know that in the case of my eduation. My uni is funded by: Bell, Nortel, intel.. and other companies that rythm with "poubelle". Found that my education was limited to what they wanted us to learn. I mean, most graduates only know the windows environement. Not enought emphasis is put on free software. Most ppl graduating don't know how to use emacs. I understand that funds are needed. But I also think that using Office (that is M$ and not 'open') or using visual studio or Windows (not Lin but M$) makes the problem of piracy bigger, because students cannot afford that software at home. Basicaly what I am saying is funding is needed and should only affect research, and not education especially at an undergrad level. Ppl should have the skills to fly on there own without needing to dish out big bucks for the software that they need.
Sorry if most of that sounded like disconected ramblings.
Do you put an emphasis on ethics, or do you just give the tool without a warning ? Do you encourage students to share information ? Is your department mostly funded but large corps. ? What do you hope your students will learn when they gradute ?
Why not:
GNU/Lindows ?

Hence. I would recomend 802.11a and not WiFi

I guess we are all going to end up being grey
Finaly I can look like I went to the beach, and still stay home in the basment in front of the computer all day long.
As I close the window to the story ... Guess what pops up.... And add for an only casino ... Hahahahaha.

Imagine for a second that they strike it big with the OS..... Will it be legal to pirate the OS in the States?
Wow ... that is one sexy bottle opener. (If you got no clue what I am talking about follow the link. It's the pic all the way at the bottom)
" atoms striking a BEC sometimes appears to leave before they enter. "
I hope that my boss was like an atom striking a BEC.

How about invonlatary DoS? Didn't the fact that they uped there modems deny service to other users? Or at least cheapened it ?
"But Linux software is getting better -- and now more closely mimics the Windows world ."
But doesn't the "Windows world" mimic the Mac world. And doesn't the Mac world mimic the Unix world.
And isn't linux a unix?
Isn't that the world wide web? Doesn't the www already run applications in the backend ... and all UI on the client ?

" have to compare the apple and the orange"
But the thing is, they are both apples. One is a red apple and the other is green.
Why would anyone use StarOffice, M$Office? When openOffice is there?
