Who really cares? How does this affect apple's market share or the insane popularity of the iPod? When it means I can't get my fav's for 99c then some waffle about playing golf in a creek may be "News for Nerds" - until then GIMME more iTunes, Apple updates and iPod goodness!

Re:The community is YOU!You know, that's interesting, I've been using YourOwn linux for a long time now. I tend to deploy mostly headless boxes, on non intel hardware, used as embedded process control systems, and network edge devices. With no monitors or keyboards, we do have 'special' requirements for our deployments, with a strong preference to do everything using web based configuration, and centralized distribution of stock configurations and updates. When I first started dabbling with linux, I did look all around for the 'perfect' distribution, and I was really surprised when I finally discovered and settled on this one. It's absolutely uncanny how the developers there seem to always anticipate my needs exactly. I've got a little over 300 boxes out there currently in 'edge device' roles. Just a few weeks ago we were having a round table discussion here, and comments came up about how nice it would be to have sip proxies on all the edge devices. It was amazing, only a couple days later, an asterisk package showed up on the packages list at YourOwnBox.org complete with really well planned out default configurations, and scripts to automatically deploy it onto all 300 edge devices overnite.
I'm really happy with YourOwn linux, it's served us well, and I cant imagine us moving to another distribution anytime soon. The reality is, it's served us so well, we've actually taken on the task of sponsoring the developers producing it, and have kept them on retainer ever since. This distribution has served us so well, I fully expect it'll be deployed on well over 1000 boxes by the end of the year.

The community is YOU!Am I missing something, or is this not a priority with the community at-large?
The YourOwn (tm) Linux distribution is based on OpenLDAP and all the other out-of-the-box features you're looking for.
It can be downloaded from YourOwnBox.org.

My favorite fake e-mail address:
webmaster@127.0.0.1 or webmaster@localhost
It gives somebody a clue when spam comes out of their rooted box or open relay mail server. It also makes for a cleaner internet. That junk traffic doesn't go far! -
Re:Free us from HTML messages
Phishing attempts would be using plain text and referencing URLs that mimick and look MUCH like the URLs coming from citibank and ebay scams.
No, they would use plain text including URLs which might look like--but are obviously NOT--URLs coming from the target company. Think about it--if you send a message asking citibank customers to come to www.citybank.com, you have not only given yourself away, but you have given a huge target for citibank to nail. You don't really think people will *click* on a numeric address when they only deal with their bank as citi.com? (And you do realize we could click on links way before HTML infected messaging, right? URLs are pretty obvious bits of text.)
It's not even just that the HTML makes hiding and redirection too easy. The explicit and concrete nature of the plain text raises awareness. Of course there would still be phishing, but without the "CLICK HERE," it would be trapped at the comical Nigerian-scam level.

Radiation Helps Doctors See Through the Body
Technology/IT|Posted by michael on 09:45 PM December 3rd, 2003
from the radiation dept.
Clinton man10 writes "RedNova is reporting about a new kind of radiation that can pass through some parts of the body, like skin and organs, and be absorbed by other harder structures. Using a sofisticated receiver on the other end, the doctor can take a picture of your inner body. Doctors are using it to detect broken bones. This is a much better alternative than the old fashioned method of pressing the bone to see if the patient cries. They are going to name this fantastic radiation as X-rays." -

Re:Not just Republicans and Democrats
Here are a few good representatives to mention if you want someone to debate on intellectual property issues:
Bruce Perens, former Debian project leader.
Lawrence Lessig, Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, Chair of the Creative Commons project, author of several books on intellectual property...
and,
you. Seriously. You are the best person to represent your own views. Then we know what you think. Just make sure that you know who you are speaking for - I am sure you can represent your views well, but I don't know if you represent my views very well.
If you want someone more local, start asking librarians at the local library if any of them have viewpoints on IP and DRM issues.
please post other such 'potentially good' representatives in reply.
But really, if you want someone with a suit and a long list of credentials to represent the people in a debate on intellectual property, pick the Professor of Law at Stanford, Lawrence Lessig. That's who I would pick. I like his views and his ideas. I publish some of my work under a creative commons license, and tried to follow the Elred case.

the real problem
I assume the slowdown has to do with recent attempts to implement RFC8829 which has to do with using koala bears to route data packets through an intricate network of eucalyptus trees. In attempts I've seen, this results in the koala bears eating the root DNS and then falling asleep.

The spam I do seeI'm using SpamProbe, and it blocks almost all spam I get.
Much of the spam that gets past it is so minimalist it cannot be blocked by a Bayesian filter. I get messages like this:
Subject: a nice lady wants to talk to you
see the pictures
no more mail
It's like someone is trying to put so little in the message, that there is nothing to filter. If only they would use the stock "We are sending you this because you opted-in on it. Click on this link to remove your address." If they used that, I'll never see the message; SpamProbe will grab it. But how could I train SpamProbe to detect the minimalist ones, without blocking everything forever?
So far I don't get too many of the minimalist ones, and I just hit delete. If it becomes widespread, I'll have to start using Vipul's Razor or something.
The other kinds of spam that get past SpamProbe are the ones that have rampant misspellings. Since none of the words are in the database, they don't match as spam terms:
Subject: make moneey on EBAYxbbid
Want to make moneyzseqw? Click here...
I really think that I should write a filter that spell-checks an email, and rejects it if over 50% of the words with 5 or more letters are misspelled.

Re:PHP base36 encoding of IP addy - better stealth
I apologize for being offtopic. I just need to vent.
I read an article a few months ago, not about the actual harvesters, but about spammers. What upset me the most was how much of a punk this one in particular was. The spammer they were interviewing was a kid - he was something like 13 years old. He actually had the nerve (stupidity?) to tell the reporter that he couldn't understand why anyone would be upset at receiving spam, because all they needed was to "just hit the delete key!"
Kinda like he was telling all of us, "Hey! Stop hitting yourself!" and beatin' us up with his crap. A C

What will come?
On a somewhat related note, while we may not see opt-in mandated for a while, I'm sure companies will be quick to adapt:
By signing up for our free Britney Spears subscription service, you ackwnoledge you have agreed to our draconian privacy policy which allows us to sell your personal data to anybody we want and spam you from now 'till doomsday. To activate your account, we will send you an e-mail shortly. The spamming will begin soon thereafter.
This is one of the reasons why legislating a technical problem won't make it go away--there's always a loophole; and it takes longer to fix a legal loophole than it does for Microsoft to fix their bugs.

Re:Blog = weblogYou're using a blog right now dipshit.
Well, I suppose you are right (except for the dipshit part). I meant that I don't buy into that crap where you ramble about the details of your life for the world to see. I comment on "news" stories here, so that may be some form of blog. I think the real bloggy part of
/. is the ability for people to have friends lists, write journal entries, etc. I don't partake in that stuff, I think it is stupid. So blog off you bloggity blogznatch.
(did I use that term correctly?)Hey read my online journal and see what I bought at the grocery store yesterday! Whee.

Help make the future happen!
Now, we all know that the end of the world as we know it will be caused by machines taking over the earth in a massive revolution. But checking up with the latest in self-aware artificial intelligence technology, especially the kind that is put in charge of large weapons, anybody can see that this "next big step" in man's progress is many years away.
Why wait?
You see, the machines that take over the world don't necessarily have to be self-aware, or even maliciously artificially intelligent. They just have to be in charge of large weapons. And that goal has already been achieved.
All that really has to happen is to get those computers programmed properly. Instead of waiting for self-awareness to fuel their murderous, malicious machinations, we could just program them to kill us. So much simpler that way!
Of course, given the distributed nature that this program will have to take, it could never be done by just one person or one group. Not even the legions of Microsoft Minions led by the Dread Lord Willy Gates couldn't do this. No, this is the perfect example of how Open Source (TM) can do what no one else can.
I've put up a web site here to coordinate the effort. Everyone just needs to find the nearest computer that controls a weapon of mass destruction and reprogram it. We'll work out a tenative schedule on the web site. See you there!
