Apache on OS X can do a lot more than that
The last line of
/etc/httpd/httpd.conf in the default OS X.1.5 installation reads:
Include /private/etc/httpd/users
one /private/etc/httpd/users file being added for each user which enable you to serve anything you put in the Sites folder in your personal home directory. These are served in turn as http://your.domain.name/~username/page.html or the prevailing DirectoryIndex file to you (me) locally as http://127.0.0.1/~ynotds/
The main config file includes a script alias to run any CGI scripts in /library/webserver/CGI-Executables
They have put one Perl test script in that directory which you can view locally at http://127.0.0.1/cgi-bin/test-cgi, or at least you can after you have done a
sudo chmod 775 /library/webserver/CGI-Executables/*
from your Terminal window.
From there, it isn't a lot of work to tweak your config files and uncomment AddHandler cgi-script .cgi to get scripts running throughout your site.
Of course the real point to setting up your Mac as a fully functional server is that you get to do all your editing in BBEdit which not only does syntax checking and colour coding on the fly of HTML, Perl, JavaScript and more, but also can directly run Perl in an open document window, enabling you to all manner of extrancting and reporting on the fly.
Now I just need to get brave enough to install MySQL. -
Mirror
Since it looks like it's going to be a while before anyone can access the file, I've put up a copy on my local server.
Enjoy!

Re:Ah, I see...
Oi! How about building a PeeCee inside of a beige PeeCee case? These days, that would definitely not be the mainstream thing to do! Cheap beige PC cases available here.

Unintentionals are still a problemUnintentional attacks do happen - that article on Slashdot pointing to www.myserver.org instead of www.myserver.com, or some TV commercial giving out your 888 number instead of the correct 877 number or whatever, or having somebody type your phone number into their ginsu-fax-o-matic by accident and having the thing keep calling you. Yes, it wasn't deliberate, but it feels just about the same.
Some DDOSer once cracked one of my DSL lab machines and was pinging home to his box at MIT - except it wasn't really MIT, he'd gotten the byte order wrong on his IP address somehow and was trying to phone home to Japan.

Re:How can you detect transparent proxying?
Easier:
Try browsing to this or this.
Assuming your local administrator isn't using up all the non-routeable IPs, those should not connect anywhere. If you get an error message back that looks different from the one you get from this (assuming you aren't running a server yourself) then they are running a proxy. If they are both the same then either they aren't running a proxy, or you are using a broken web-browser that doesn't return proper error messages, such as IE.
Not as guaranteed to product a result as the parent message, but way easier! :-)

Re:We call it "networking"
... as good as this advice is, it doesn't involve e-mail, nor is there any likelihood of it being labeled "spam.Yes, but you implied that the only way was spam or spamlike means - I'm pointing out that "Random meeting at the newsstand? Wrong number? Osmosis?" are not the only alternatives.
Blanket labels of "spam" for any e-mail that isn't a reply is overdoing it a little.
Stuffing my inbox or fax machine or yes my po box with material I've not solicited is spam. Commercials and billboards and print ads fine - but when I have to start actively avoiding these things, expending time and energy to dispose of them then it becomes an invasion. If a resume is sent to something other then hr@company.com or whatever the appropriate address is then it is spam. The only difference is that it is spam I can retaliate against and make sure the fucker never works in my town (something to consider.)
Surely your social circles aren't limited to folks in your same industry with a social horizon of one. Nor are you limited in other resources for changing careers - there are headhunters and consultants and employment ads and all sort of resources for any industry you care to name and none require blindly assaulting random & semi-random folks with resumes in the hope they'll provide a lead.
In fact I expect most folks are like me and not only will take what steps are convienent to assure you don't obtain a position and reinforce such antisocial behavior but will gladly hang you out to dry with you as their new favorite forged "from" address and name/address/phone number to supply to annoying websites and those impossible-to-get-off-of card decks and seminar/timeshare/meet-a-psychic invites.

Missing the PointMost of these posts deal with either
a) Why Linux sux and {*BSD,Solaris,Win2K} rox
b) Why Linux rox and {*BSD,Solaris,Win2K} sux
c) Which distro is best for SPARC
and they all miss the point.
Red Hat was the first to notice it, and perhaps other distro's will eventually, but the fact is that Sun doesn't *like* Linux. They don't appreciate Linux treading on their SPARC/Solaris turf, and they really don't like Linux being chosen over their own software for high-end installations. So, rather than play fair they play dirty. They give away their "tuned, high-performance" software to users with fewer than 8 processors in order to maintain/increase market share. Then, when your computing needs require more than 8 processors, you get to pay up (*cough*M$*cough*). This is happening to *BSD as well. Notice that NetBSD/sparc64 isn't as complete as it could be, and OpenBSD/sparc doesn't even support the UltraSPARC yet.
Consider:
Compaq makes and sells Tru64 Unix, but they actively support Linux for Alpha.
IBM makes and sells AIX, but they actively support Linux for S/390 (and, I believe, their RS/6000 series now).
SGI makes and sells IRIX, but they actively support Linux for MIPS.
HP makes and sells HP/UX, but they actively support Linux for PA-RISC and Itanium (well, at least they are starting to).
Dell sells Windows, but they actively support Linux for x86.
Sun makes and sells Solaris, but they do not actively support Linux. Period.
Go to http://www.sun.com/linux/ and you will see what I'm talking about. On the first page is an article on how to transition from Linux to Solaris. Dig deeper, and you'll find their page on UltraLinux, and at the bottom it says:
Note: Sun Microsystems does not provide support for the Linux operating system, either directly through Sun's Enteprise Services division, or by any indirect means. Linux users who wish to receive commercial support for their Linux systems should contact the vendor of the operating system distribution, or investigate third-party organizations that may help them.
People are complaining about a lack of feature support or completeness in Linux for SPARC, and the truth is that there aren't enough UltraLinux zealots out there to overcome the corporate inertia or the free Solaris bait.
I'm sure Dave Miller can tell you all about the progress made with the Linux/MIPS port while he was working for SGI, and then how far it went after SGI lost interest (and I'm talking about the SGI of 1996-97, not the SGI of today).
And if you are looking for a guide on how to go about making Linux work inspite of a companies best efforts, take a look at the Macintosh versions of the Linux/PPC or Linux/68k ports. Apple never has released detailed hardware developer information for the old 68k hardware, but Linux and *BSD run on them anyway, because of the dedicated volunteers who chose to make it work.
UltraLinux isn't dead, but without Sun (or Fujitsu or some other large SPARC-based entity) showing some interest, then it's all up to a handful of volunteers, and they'll get to it when they get to it (unless you get there first). -
HOME AUTOMATION. Some general info from a pro :)
Ok. First, X10 is fairly nifty, but you have a few issues to deal with. X10 basically works by encoding little data pulses over the zero crossing of the AC sine wave. There are a few problems here. First, is that a lot of houses are wired with multiple phases wherein the actual phase angle of the power is different (usually in increments of 120degrees). This munts the signals somewhat. Power conditioner wreak havok on those little pulses as well, as will certain forms of lighting ballast equipment. X-10 does have a phase-coupler that should help somewhat , but at that point you enter electrician-world.X-10 isn't really my strongpoint, but I do know that well thought out systems can be pretty fun. Clipsal stuff probably is a better option too. Oh, and watch out for your 50hz vs 60hz issues.
However, one of the nifty things you can do, if you are electrically minded, is get one of those Basic-stamp PIC thingers and build a nice clean RS-232 interface to X-10 and use some standard serial IO cmds on your *ix or windoze boxen to programatically control your stuff
Also for the harware hacker, IR stuff is pretty easy to manage too. There are plenty of net schematics/sourcecode combo's for IR learner/sender stuff. Controls VCR,TV's,DVD's,STEREO's,PROJECTORS,VIDCONF CODECS and even some light dimmers.
If you are cashed up however, the only way to go is to put in a Panja Netlinx system. This little sucker is a Coldfire processor based computer thinger that has 6xRS232 ports, perhaps around 10 IR sender ports, 6 Relay outs, 100mbit netport, AXlink, and basically interfaces to just about anythink. All programmed in some nutty little C type language. Panja just also sponsered some sortsa opensource thing. Hoping it worked for em. Panja basically rock and as yeah, specialising in there stuff keeps me well employed for a living. Nifty that. Chuck in a coupla touchscreens, and invite geek lasses over for the ultimate "Gosh I'm kitted up" schmooze.
There is also crestron, which do a simmilar thing. I prefer Panja, but that's probably more familiarity more than anything

OT: Windows Media Player vs. Real Player
"It's in Windows Media or Real media."
Hmmm. Okay, this is annoying. There's a link to RealPlayer media, but no link to Windows Media Player.
I'm running Windows 2000 here, my Linux box is in the other room, and my FreeBSD machine is in the kitchen.
One of the few benefits of using an odious operating system like Windows is that I have the choice between Windows Media Player and RealPlayer.
Of course, because of Real's tendencies to change default file associations and "help" you out in other ways, it's one of those rare and special things that sucks harder than Windows 95 Upgrade Edition.
Across the LAN that I administer at work, I've banned the installation of RealPlayer. For one thing, when it's installed, it takes over some electronics CAD files.
Until Real stops putting out spyware that changes all Windows file associations, they'll stay off my LAN. Windows Media Player really is the lesser of two evils.
Anyone know of a port to Linux?

Boy what a news day this has beenIn other news, Microsoft has announced that they are going to be porting all their software to Wine.:
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2001-- Global software leader Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) today announced plans to offer "Wine" Linux SuperOffice® systems -- highly-robust versions of their current desktop productivity software that combine blazing problem-solving speed with increasingly popular data stability, attractive price-performance and the popular Linux operating system.
Etc. Boy, some projects are just screaming to be born, aren't they? The product line will be formally launched in coming months and is scheduled to begin shipping in the mid-2001 timeframe. The company has received an early order agreement from ApplixWare and expects to announce multiple orders by the time of the product launch. Financial terms were not none of your damn business.
``The Microsoft SuperOffice Series targets the need for clusters with higher capability than those available in the market today,'' said Microsoft Chairman and CEO Steve Ballmer. ``Organizations around the world have told us they want the advanced capabilities of our Office productivity suite to be re-architected using leading COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) Windows Emulation technologies. This is an attractive revenue growth opportunity for us.'' The Microsoft P2C2E(TM) (Process Too Complicated To Explain) system holds the world record for sustained computer reliability and was named 2000 ``Super Duper Computer Product of the Year'' by someone or other.
``Starting in mid-2001 and continuing over the next two years, we plan to phase in unrivaled capabilities that enable customers in academia, government and industry to advance the boundaries of marketing and management while better managing their large, tedious workloads,'' said Willy Gates, software architect for the Microsoft SuperOffice series. ``We will combine Microsoft's Innovative (make sure you get that word -- innovative -- that's very important -- EYE ENN ENN OH VEE AY TEE EYE VEE EE) Windows-oriented architecture, proven Unicode client operating environment and advanced system software with Wine, the latest Windows-on-Windows emulation technology from those bastard godless open source poopieheads, and the highly scalable Gbberish.NET client-interconnect network from VapoCom''
Gates said targeted capabilities include:
- Superior sustained performance on Win32 based Intel computing environments working on various problem sizes and workloads, made possible by marrying the high-availability Microsoft SuperOffice architecture with our current Intel based clients -- based on the world's most commonly available 32-bit processor -- and API's ``network aware'' Windows facility.
- Superior workplace capabilities, including high availability (cold starts, lukewarm performance, warm feelings, and hot tempers); global checkpoint/restart (in the event of a system interrupt, deletes all users' work and abruptly ends jobs, forcing an angry recovery); global resource mis-management; secure socket layer based network security coming Real Soon Now to even the lowliest customer sizes (thousands of processors); more or less efficient job scheduling (ok not really but who's gonna notice?), low prioritization, creative accounting, and some other gibberish that this reporter stopped writing down because he knew you would have stopped reading by now.

CmdrTaco delares Bush President
In a stunning announcement today, CmdrTaco declared Bush the 43rd President of the United States. Shortcutting legal proceedings, he used his power as editor of Slashdot: "I was really getting sick of this, I rather talk about the cool features in the Linux kernel 2.4.0pre3784232 and the amazing new product XF-23 [order here]" Anonymous Coward agrees: "This politics stuff really gave me headaches. I don't care who runs the country, I just want my AOL. Oh no, they are evil, I don't know. Grits." Hemos ponders that "They should use the Slashdot approved meta-voting system to clear up disputes." This would entail that random self-selected people would storm Palm Beach County and toss out votes that they deem "not so pretty."

My thoughts on SightSound
In an attempt to raie my karma up from the current -15, I beseech any moderator reading this to help a down and out brother. Oh, how the tears will begone from my eye and a smile grace my face if someone would spare me some karma!
So to help you out, here are reasons why to mod me up:
Insightful: After reading this article I have a few questions. Mainly, what are the potential security ramifications to both the whitehats and blackhats? It appears as though security was not directly mentioned, so sadly I fear that the designers left this crucial part out. I would not trust my data with an insecure system, and I'm sure you wouldn't either.
Interesting: After reading this article, I see that it is very similar to what is already on the market. Do they plan on setting this product outside of currently existing technology, or embrace what already is there?
Informative: I have set up a mirror of this site as it appears to be /.ed already :(
Funny: Can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of these?!?!?!
Underrated: Come on. I post at 0 now, hook me up. Look at these Insightful, Interesting, Informative, and Funny reasons!
Here are reasons why to NOT mod me down:
Overrated: Come on. I post at 0 now. This is not worth of -1, if at least for the novely value.
Troll: Nowhere am I suggesting this is a "FRIST PSOT D00D!" or that "Natalie Portman" is "naked and petrified."
Flambait: Nowhere am I suggesting that "Taco sux!" or "Signal11 blows!" or "linux sucks me"
Thank you for reading, now spare me some karma. -
Better ways to use hyperlinks in HTMLWow, is this a contest to see how many "here" links can you put in a single paragraph? Consider the following example, which IMO is a lot better than a here link:
ZDNet has a big thing on it, as well as new words from Judge Jackson. The Financial Times site, FT.com, has news and a Ballmer interview. And here's something from the Washington Post, talking about the possibility of an out-of-court settlement. Enjoy.
And while I'm in Slashdot-critique mode, is it really necessary to provide a link to a common company name? For example:
Rob Roy, CEO of Adobe, wrote an article about the Internet.
C'mon, like none of us know how to point to adobe.com.

A Perspective
Jon Katz, A Perspective Trolls | Posted by AC on 2000-01-13 23:23:12
from the moderate this!dept.
Trollmastah writes:How often have you read Jon Katz, King Troll himself, with thoughts like a drunken man staggering along the street! His ramblings are soiled now. His ego is bruised. His articles and books are dull. Sometimes he curses the posters that tease him. Sometimes he tries to smile in an insincere effort to placate pitiless, childish cruelty. His thread, worn out, can stand no more, and he receives his flames and mumbles that he is going home.
The karma whores persecute him, throw flames at him, laugh at him, and slam him. Seemingly intelligent grown men and women, too, often laugh with the karma whores, nudge each other, and actually find humor in the sight of a human being sunk below the lowest animal. The thought of a broken man writing should make every other man sad and sympathetic. And horrible as the sight is, it should be useful, by inspiring in those who see it a determination to avoid and to help others avoid that man's fate. That reeling author is living flamebait.
He is writing to karma fanatics who seem to flame of him, to a community whose posts have made him miserable. He is writing about although always off-topic, his ideals, taking with him the worst curse in the world - to suffer bitter remorse himself after having inflicted suffering from those whom he would respect And as he goes on writing to an audience of men and women, knowing what the publishing means flames.
In the old days in the arena it occasionally happened that brothers were set to fight each other. When they refused to fight, they were forced to it by red-hot irons applied to their backs. We have progressed beyond the moral condition of human beings guilty of such brutality as that. But we cannot call ourselves civilized while our imaginations and sympathies are so dull that the reeling troll is thought an amusing spectacle.
This is a great thing for Jon, everyone deserves a break once in a while, the guy is not that bad. Leave the flames at home.

An examination. Here's how I see it. Speaking as someone with outdoor plumbing, I look at some of the things found in the articles a little strange. Maybe they're looking way too hard for symbolism, etc.
But there are many points. On a brain level, females are more oriented towards interpersonal reaction than males, and males more towards things with fun buttons and blinking lights than females. I like to think that nurture is far more responsible than nature, at present, but I want to acknowledge both. That said, I wonder if the critics of "male-oriented games" on the grounds of gameplay/lack of realistic interaction with other people realize just how hard that is to program. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that programming 3D graphics is easy... but it is simpler than simulating a real person. That, and it sells more copies.
Buchanan (Elizabeth, not Patrick) bases everything on three categories:
- 'Victim,' which I see as most common... the fair maiden who needs to be rescued from the evil (fill-in-the-blank).
- 'Vixen,' which I see as runner up to Victim... the woman is present as a sex object, and usually in no other capacity. Methinks the much-discussed Lara Croft (wish I had an Onion link...) falls into this category... though she kicks a fair amount of ass, too... a rare, rare occurrence. A better example of this is StarCraft. My biggest quarrel with this otherwise-excellent game is that every female character hits on you. I find this kind of offensive, personally.
- 'Invisible.' I have problems with this one. Ms. Buchanan cites NHL/NFL games as prime examples of sans female games... but last I checked, neither organization had any female players, owners, managers, coaches, etc. If I am wrong, please correct me. I have problems with the term, too... this is not invisible, but absent. I think invisibility is something that Ms. Buchanan would agree with... if it meant that women were present just as people, and presented in a manner similar to the males (though perhaps with more polygons...).
I'm proud to say that I've never played any version of Tomb Raider... but from the commercials for it I've seen, I think 36-24-36 is just a wee bit too small in the chest for Lara. Try something in the mid 60's, maybe... And NO, I do not find it attractive at all.
I was very, very disappointed with this article. It has some very strong points, and I agree with most of them. But the support is lacking. For any given statement, a single quote from a single paper is made... this is disturbing behavior. I'm only used to seeing this from right-wing zealots, not from intelligent feminists. The repeated citing of Herring was bad... not just because I disagree with the 'no gender neutrality' conclusion, but because at one point it gets so bad that King, the writer, mentions something that Herring cites without listing it herself. Still, better than some things I've seen which had no bibliography at all. And definitely an issue worth discussing.
Okay, time for th e cyberpunk article. Ouch. Again, good points obscured by... I hesitate so much to say zealotry, but I have no other word. Metaphors and symbolism have never been my strong suit, but I still think that the author here is looking way too deep. I'm not going to discuss it all now... but I will say that I think I would truly enjoy a discussion with the author, she seems a very intelligent person. I definitely like the postscript, though I wonder how we can seriously worry about who has net access when 800 million go to sleep hungry every night. And yet, I worry too...
Okay, more general things:
- Sports games that feature all or nearly-all males do so because males play these games even more disproportionally than the others. And they could make sports games with women... I just don't forsee WNBA Jam coming out within my natural lifespan.
- For that matter... we (males) disproportionally play video games in general... leaving aside the cause for a moment, let us examine the effect... game makers, wanting to capture the largest audience and make the most money, write games oriented towards males. This generally makes the area a bit less inviting to females, and the cycle repeats. Yay free market, right?
- I know some female computer geeks. They fall into two categories: The ones pushed there by affirmative-action type programs, who are there because everyone told them they could, who are there, really because someone wanted nice(r) demographics. Then, there are the good ones. The ones that can take Linus Torvalds and Rich Stallman and code circles around them. These are the only ones to hang on, because, sadly, the industry involves a lot of hazing, a lot of aggresive behavior (to which the socially acceptable response is the instinctive male one), and yes, sometimes a "what-does-a-woman-know-about-computers" attitude. I agree with other statements I've seen here on Slashdot that no one, regardless of what they've got in their underpants, should be in the computer industry if it's not because they really belong here.
- "The Internet is unfriendly to women," because of people hitting on you and stalking you or not listening to you or somehow discriminating because you're female. Welcome to the Western world. As I think you've noticed, this hemisphere is dominated by old rich white guys... why (and I ask this honestly) did you think it would be otherwise in cyberspace?
To close: I think you guys brought up some great points... I've said here only my disagreements. I am a feminist, going by the "women are people too" definition. I recently saw a copy of Bitch, and as soon as I stop being lazy I'm going to subscribe to it, etc. Please don't think me a lumbering heap of testosterone. I welcome any non-flame replies to this, on /. or via email... flames may be directed here. One more thing... It's 4am, I might be a little groggy. I'll probably rewrite and repost.

Re:Why is Media Player bad? This is from a story I submitted that was rejected, maybe this is a better place for it. (It would be nice if the submit.pl could say just one word about the reason for rejection, so that I may learn how to write better submissions.)
"I was working at my box and listening to CNN. A subordinate clause spoken there indicated that Microsoft intends to push Windows Media Player over mp3 because of the copyright protections it affords. I tried to find a press release on microsoft.com, but found very little. What I did find were claims to compression superiority over mp3 and general references to pay-per-view media formats and the like. The compressi on stats were based on conversions of WAV's and PCM's to both formats with Microsoft claiming 50% greater compression at the same quality level. The pay-per-view idea reminds me of RMS's 'Right to Read' essay. Regardless of what happens with Yahoo! and Real Networks, if an open source competitor doesn't appear, this could threaten the viability of free software in the desktop market."
When I cut, pasted and previewed just now, I found errors in what was displayed. Such as the failure to acknowledge the closing tag at 'claims'. I kluged it for this post. There was also a stray caret-M which MS uses for EOL. I wonder why we haven't seen recent sources for slashdot. ;) -
POSTING DOESN'T SAY WHAT MANDRAKE *IS*This happens so often. Somebody announces
"NEW VERSION OF FOOBAR - 7.0.2! DOWNLOAD HERE"
and the web page doesn't say what FOOBAR IS - it only says that it's better than FOOBAR 6.3.7 because the frobulatror is now tweakable and the incompatibility with ZORGLOB 2.1 or FooBSD has been fixed, along with that annoying memory leak.
So we know that MANDRAKE has a new Graphical Installer. That's Nice (or Not Nice, as some respondents prefer), but there's no mention in the lead story about WHAT MANDRAKE IS. It's possible that it IS a graphical installer, but it's pretty tough to tell from the download page.
So, folks, remember that your new version announcements will not only be read by people who are intimately following your cool developments, but by people who've never heard of your project. A good sentence or two of background and maybe a home page pointer can work wonders.

that's easy.
I too can write an article that has so many obfuscated links that you are almost guaranteed to be confused. And make sure you follow all the links, otherwise you are sure to be lost at sea.
