Look for Eclipse Plugins for plugins, I dont see one for perl or xslt yet

I recently wrote an BrainFuck interpreter in INTERCAL. I keep it here and it's an evil evil beast. :D

Several years back I also wrote a relatively full-featured BBS, complete with message boards, file areas and dropfile support for door games, in QBASIC, as well as a DataPac network scanner in same. :/

I am not aware of any other IDE that let you develop in multiple languages AND multiple toolkits

It didn't want to eat you then. Constrictors strike their prey with their mouth to get a good grip on them before they very quickly wrap their prey. Even the 15 footer we have right now isn't strong enough to resist a from-the-tail unwrapping because its muscles just aren't made that way. Unwrapping from the head is almost futile, however, as it is like armwrestling a guy with a 1 foot thick arm, and you have to move his hand 7 feet.

Okay, I'm glad that FAQ got linked to finally.

Why is everyone overlooking the reason that this levy got introduced in the first place -- it was introduced to compensate music artists and publishers for the fact that copying audio, for private use, is now legal.

What this means, is that you can stop by future shop, pick up 6 spindles of CDRs, come to my house, and copy all of my 300 or so CDs. Legally. As long as you don't use them for a public performace.

That's why the levy was introduced -- because by making this legal, the goverenment of Canada knowingly reduced the revenues of Canadian musicians and publishers.

Now, if you are of the opinion that a goverenment should be able to knowingly do that sort of thing to an industry in it's country without some form of compensation, then that's another matter -- but to complain about this levy being 'unfair' requires that you look at it from the perspective of the publishers who were affected by the copyright amendment in 1997.

Also, keep in mind that the new, proposed levies are just that -- proposed. It's unlikely that they'll pass with the current amounts.

On my main page the background color of the top "Links" box doesn't show up, and in this simple HOWTO, Opera changes all my text to fixed-width after the first blockquote. Perhaps the version I'm using is just too old (Opera 5.0 for Linux - 20010510 Build 024), but I really don't see why everyone gushes about its compliance.

You can store anything from the window coordinates (which while it sounds superfluous, its very nice to have a window you use a lot pop up in the SAME place every time) to, well, any other type of data you want to be persistent. Not just a few important data, but everything can be stored and reread in a totally consistant way.

Not just a few important data, but everything can be stored and reread in a totally consistant way.

Slashcode doesn't put spaces in the hrefs, only in the text. The spaces are put in to prevent a troll from putting in a really long line which will destroy the formatting of the page (causing you to have to scroll back and forth to read the comments).

If we could add more detailed features to this grid, it could become a useful summary.

At first in the writeup it looked as though you were planning on compliling an image, and I thought to my self "Holy crap, self! Can complilers these days make graphics from source code?" Then I realized that you were just compiling the program to make the image. Then I looked at the example, and it looks as though you are (effectively) compiling a graphic. I'm so confused... :o)

I wrote a package entitled COG that is more or less a web based bbs system (my own site linked to).

I spent last year studying abroad in Grenoble, France, and became interested in these little guys when i noticed them starting to crop up around the city there. Apparently there's only one tile one in Grenoble, but there are many more that are spraypainted. I started noticing them in other cities, too, and for a while I really thought they were some sort of city beautification project. The tile ones, especially, are very well done.

Inferring from space-invaders.com, this phenomenon is pushed mostly by a couple of French kids. I think they either live in Montpellier (in the south of France) or in Paris, because that's where I saw the most tile invaders, and those two cities are the most elaborate part of their web site.

The invaders actually got me interested in graffiti-as-art in general. If you've never checked out some of the really neat graffiti, go over to graffiti.org to check out some of the better stuff. I also have some photos of Grenoble's large graffiti wall up at ambient.2y.net. Granted, a lot of graffiti is just people showing off or advertising their gang or whatever, but some of it is truly amazing.

It's much like a BBS, except served off a webserver. It preserves alot of the best community aspects of the old BBS while using the flexibility of HTML for display.

It's GPL'd, and available at sourceforge.

It's working pretty well. The code behind it is GPL'd and is easy to setup.

Anyways, now I have to plug my software (open source, yes). It's called COG. It'll run under anything OS you can get java working on. It's pretty easy to setup, and lets you create and customize virtual communities to your heart's content. I want to bring the hobby community to the internet, and with broadband now a reality rather than a dream, it really does work.

Humans are social creatures. They enjoy interacting. It's instinctive.

The online world isn't like the real world where people can just meet. It requires tools to be made. Ever since messaging on systems was invented, people have used the online world for communication.

Most community sites on the internet are commercial driven. There are mass-market sites like egroups and what not that offer cookie-cutter communities. These are terrible.

Tools such as COG (demo website linked to) may change all that in a few months. I sure hope it does.

From what i've seen of things like hard-drive copy protection, the dmca, lower-power radio being made illegal, copyright protected cable... You the individual no longer have any right to disseminate any kind of information. With broadband increasing in availabilty, software such as COG being made available that allows the average user to run powerful webserving software off their own computer.. i think it wont be long before we see the government requiring a license to run your own webserver. And with us programmers being the ones who are coming up with all the hacks around the copyprotection schemes, i can see it being illegal to program without a license. Think it's far fetched? So is the idea of a corporation having the ability to take away your rights...and we all see how that's turned out.

I love BBSes. I used to run one on an old 386 of mine for several years. The internet has never come up with something quite like it yet... so I'm building my own, and sharing it with everyone. I'm trying to get it out to people more (college consumes alot of time :( ) and always looking for help.. but anyways. I've released the first version of it, and the example community being ran off it can be seen at The Machine

It's relatively easy to setup..i wrote the instructions for installing for a normal person, even though it uses apache and mysql. I know of a few people with no programming or networking experience running it off their home computers. Check out the site at The Machine

I have begun work on just such a project..in fact i began work on it over a year ago. The results of it can be viewed at The Machine. The code for it is also freely available from there. It's tightly knit..probably wouldnt work very well for massive systems with hundreds of thousands of accounts. The site currently has about 1900 or so, and averages a few thousand pageviews a day. About the amount your larger BBSes would have back in the day. I'm working on bringing more of a sense of community to it..but currently it works quite well.

I do run my own website using software I wrote. The Machine, community. Anyways, posting misleading things underneath supposed "news" headlines makes slashdot the national enquirer of technews websites at best and shows the sheer irresponsibility of its makers. Slashdot puts up a facade of journalism, but I dont think any respectable journalist would touch /. with a 20 foot pole. Slashdot could be a great phenonmenon, just like linux, but inevitibly the childish zealot people running the show screw it all up.

First, before anyone starts harping on me about "well, if you would submit the damn bug!" or "this is beta, so quit whining" or any other comments like that, forget it. I have heard 'em all before. I have submitted the same bug over and over. It never has made it into the bug database - why? Ya got me. I can't believe that I am incapable of submitting bugs and one would think that after submitting the same bug over and over (10 times at least) that at least one of them would have been submitted correctly. And the people at Netscape - I don't wanna hear "well you should join the project!" either. I've had it with this outfit.

So, here is what has me so riled up today. It all revolves around this page of mine. It uses width="100%" and height="100%" tags on images so that they create a border around the text. It is 100% legit HTML. Netscape 4.5+ has been broken when it comes to this - it all worked fine on versions previous to 4.5. Mozilla has been broken ever since it started. Mozilla used to work fine on the width tag, but now that is busted too.

I have M17 up on my Linux box. It is broken. M18 is broken. NS6PR2 is broken under Windows. I would have tried NS6PR2 under Linux, but I am not going to become root to run a web browser.

This is a joke and it is not worth my time to battle with it any more. Suck was right. It's time to toss it and move on to another project. Mozilla and Netscape are dead.
