    I'm playing "Devil's Advocate" here.

    Granted, you were young and pretty foolish, but that doesn't excuse the things you've done. It was as bad as walking up to someone and picking their pocket, stealing a purse from an un-attended shopping cart, only with a LOT more money involved. How can you justify to me or any other employer involved in either law enforcement or computer/network security to hire you? And the idea of "Use a thief to catch a thief" really doesn't float with most cops, trust me =)

    I use Freenet now for most music downloads. While it can be a bit difficult to navigate for at first, if you aren't afraid of reading and experimentation. It's far from perfect, but it works.

    Hm... Not a bad idea. Using IMAP would then let me get them all into the new client.

    The only reason we don't use IMAP instead of POP is space. Our mail server is pitifully under powered and the drive is only 10gig. With 60 users, that would fill up in a hurry.

    Thanks for the suggestion on IMAP, though. That should work :-)

    While I realize I may get flamed to a small charcoal briquette for this, what about importing into this (or any other Open Source product, for that matter) your calendar (or messages) from Outlook?

    In my office, we use both Win products and Linux/Unix. Windows basically owns most of the desktops in here, while *nix is on many of our servers. I use Linux for my workstation, and many of my coworkers are interested in trying it as well. The big stumbling block? Getting their mail into Evolution/Kmail/Nutscrape/Mozilla as well as all their calendar items.

    Outlook Express can export into a format that Evolution will read, but not if it's working from a .pst file. Has anyone found a way to happilly export mail, contacts, calendar, etc. reliably? So far I've tried all the options Outlook 2000 offers into Evolution, Kmail and Mozilla without success. You can send contacts as V-Cards into Evolution, but that's a long and tiresome task if you have over 300 contacts since Outlook has a nasty habit of only letting send about 10 at a time (at least, I've run into problems sending more... is it possible to do?).

    Projects like OEone or KOrganizer are great, but it's more difficult to get anyone to try them if it means losing all their old/current data.

    I do see your point. I indeed misstated what I was trying to get across. I should have said "Dell as a company" and not "Dell product". Also, I don't consider a keyboard or single drive failure as a major issue. I just look at it as routine.

    You start by claiming you've never had ANY (your emphasis) trouble with Dell, and then tell us how the Dell hardware fails.

    Hm.

    The title of the /. article was "Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products?"

    I stated that when hardware failed on one of the Dell products, they backed their product up and replaced it, and will do so for 3 years when what is "normal" for the industry is one year. And, they do it in a timely manner, not making me go to them, as so many others do. So, I don't see how I my claim was inaccurate. I have no problems and never have had any problems with Dell as a company.

    *shrug*

    If you think about it, 4 machines (I also just noticed I only listed 3 machines, but there has been another machine [laptop] which ran into trouble) out of 90+? That's not bad. And the parts that failed are things which one would expect to fail on any brand of computer. Keyboard, hard drive. Two parts which get almost constant use.

    P.S. that experience you had with repair...it's known as "normal". It's not exceptional when a company lives up to its promises (okay, maybe it is).

    Normal? LOL! OK, define "normal" and then say that :-) You're correct, it should NOT be exceptional that a company lives up to it's promises. But it also should not be "exceptional" that a company backs up it's product. Even Apple, who used to give tech support, free, 24 hours a day for it's products, has done away with that. You get free tech support for what, 3 months and one year on hardware. Then you're on your own.

    So "normal" for the industry is a one year warranty, and you have to bring the product to a service center, then wait to get it fixed. Dell fixed all my issues one site, within 24 hours. So in essence, I would call that decidedly "abnormal".

    I'm sure someone has had issue with them. But let's see... I've had one of the drives fail on a Dell PowerEdge 6300, called them at 4:30pm on Monday and had the replacement drive at 10am Tuesday. Recently had the keyboard fail on a Dell Inspiron notebook, called at 9:30am and had a tech here at 1pm (fixed and tested). Had a drive fail on a workstation, not even one of their fancy ones, and they didn't even ask for the dead drive back... Just sent me a new one.

    Now, I know, that's 4 machines, that may sound like alot. But we're talking about one drive from one machine in a group of 10 PowerEdge servers and 3 external arrays cranking out 24/7, one keyboard out of 12 laptops (in the hands of sales weasels, no less...), and one drive out of ... ye gods... I think we have about 60 workstations. And each and every one, they had it fixed quick, no questions, no issues.

    To top that off, I have this service plan for 3 years, and we didn't pay any extra for it. I dunno, there are certainly more cool and/or less expensive computers out there, but I can't think of any that can offer that level of service or commitment.

    I'm reading plenty of people bashing the 5300, and rightfully so. But, IMHO, Apple also blew it with the initial release of the 1400.

    When the 1400 first hit the streets I was working selling Macs, and many shoppers had lost faith in Apple products after the 5300 and the release of the monstrosity that was MacOS 7.5 ("An error of Type 11 has just occurred. Please reboot, scream, and curl up under your desk in the fetal position"). The place I worked in sold both WinTel and Mac products, and the Mac area was and still is a major portion of the store and does brisk business. But it made being a "Fruit Head" that much harder when you had a new version of the OS that sucked, and laptops that were rumored to catch fire (though I never actually saw that one had burst into flames, I do remember seeing one seriously melted on the bottom of the case).

    Yes, the 1400 looked great, it was light (compared to the 5300) and it had a newer 603e chip. But there was short supply, and they shipped with comparatively little as far as hardware and software. I mean, lets face it, even back then shipping a laptop with only 8 megabytes of RAM was a mistake. Also, I don't think it was wise of Apple to have one model which shipped without the level 2 cache (1400cs). What I saw happening was people simply buying the lesser expensive model (I don't remember the exact MSRP but it was sub US$2000) not understanding what an L2 Cache would do for them as far as performance, and then getting fed up with it and returning it for a WinTel model. As a matter of fact, there was a major sale made in which a large Vulture Capitalist firm had purchased 60 or so 1400cs's from some on line vendor, found them to be painfully slow and crashed often (MacOS 7.5.3, I believe... also painful) and returned the lot. They then came into our store and bought all we had of a WinTel model.

    Apple lost quite a bit of the mobile computing market with the 5300 series, sure, and it has come a long way. But I don't think the 1400 series helped.

    [additional: Yes yes yes, I know it was upgradable and I know it could even be upped to a G3 :-) But while it was new, all that wasn't exactly advertised by Apple and most consumers didn't know all that.]

    I mean Micrsoft makes reliable, stable and highly secure *chuckle* operating *giggle* systems which should be on every *snort*laugh* server *guffaw*....
