Re:Not that hard. Harder they fall
Better yet, experience the inside of a plane hitting the ground, as a Canadian after you've been downed by a bird!

IOC hypocrites
The IOC is a bunch of hypocrites. They ought to tell VANOC the same thing for the 2010 games in Vancouver.
Look what VANOC told me about the "openness" of the Internet:
http://www.abandonedstuff.com/2008/03/03/a-pre-emptive-no-from-vanoc/
They also aren't letting athletes blog openly about the Games, they can't talk about many things. -
Re:I only liked CFLs because they lasted longer.
Could it be because you had them enclosed? Just asking? I've had non-enclosed die early too. Some have lasted over 2 years so far though. I think the electronics in them is shoddy.

Geist argues for moderate approach
In Canada we're fighting the same battle with the RIAA (although here they are called the CRIA). We are dealing with oppressive media that is completely on the side of business, and couldn't give a damn about the average public.

I assembled a collection of famous geek photos
I've included myself, but the list is fairly accurate, and not at all biased.
Why take photos with famous people, when you can just take photos of relative nobodies for free? -
Re:From the article....
I was surprised to see Slashdot talking about something I wrote an article about just on the past weekend. Celebrating the Income Gap.

Re:There's nothing worth watching on TV.
"Not a lot more online"
That's why I add to it with my daily blogging ;-)
And also why I started The Teleban. -
Rip off
They are using inferior tin instead of aluminum. And one of the photos clearly demonstrates that it's a rip off of my Pet Foil Hat Technology.
Judge for yourself. -
Re:Since when is a "driven social content website"
Something like Digg, or Stumble Upon, is how many web users surf. It's the latest in Channel Hopping, and I think it's here to stay.
The latest craze on the web is a 2000 Bloggers meme, where the photos of the blogmasters link to their website, giving people a random way to surf the blogosphere based on the looks of the author. -
Re:TV? Pffft.
The fad is about to be over.
I've started a movement called the Teleban designed to Ban TV once and for all. We're doing it for the children of the world.
I've already seen the Internet revolutionize how I watch TV. I watch about 5% of what I used to, and most shows I watch on the Internet or from Bit Torrent instead. I haven't seen more than ads for American Idol in years, and that's a Good Thing (TM). -
Re:Here's a thought... Use them!
Loonies - I wonder how many Slashdotters know what those are.
When Slashdot last wrote about making coin melting illegal in the USA, I wrote this
http://www.abandonedstuff.com/2006/12/27/get-rid-o f-the-5cent-coin/
It would be nice if we get rid of the smaller value coins, since we're spending so much money on them, and they really don't do much for us. When they were first minted they could have the spending power of a loonie, but now they are tedious for everyone but children, destitute, and bankers. -
Re:Why result to laywers.....
Do you think this Jack Bauer guy would ever try to take down the Teleban? After all the organization devoted to Banning TV, might pose a threat to his career.

My letter to my MP

It's important all Canadians write their MP and educate them about the CRIA shenanigans. -
Re:BBC + Microsoft + Google = Confusing Weather
I saw the same thing right away too.
And I'd like to add that an excellent CBC program you can watch online shows how the anti-Climate Change crowd gets the play that they do.
The Denial Machine

Re:Isolation on the rise too
I think online communities like YouTube and Slashdot will end up brining people together. And if you disagree with me I'll wig out and get all polarized
;-)
Ban TV - Perhaps you'd like to join the Teleban, and join my crusade to bring an end to old style entertainment that keeps people isolated? -
Re:Duh
Other blogs tend to hold bloggers to account, but they degenerate into flamewars, and blogwars, because there's no "professional" courtesy extended, or national advertising contracts to lose if they are seen as bickering children by the public.
I write on my blog about bloggers saying stupid things all of the time - yet I'm statistically invisible because I only have about 400 eyes [assuming no cyclops] reading my site a day. Unless a pair of those eyes is from CNN, a big-blogger, or the government, my impact is unlikely to change opinions.
Just yesterday I slammed Larry King, because he's a journalist in 2006 who can't use "the Google". Will the world care what I think about King? Probably not, but my views were echoed around the blogosphere. One of my readers who came to me through Slashdot paid me a nice compliment and said that he'd rather read what I'm saying than Bill O'Reilly. -
Re:The End of the Beginning?
As a Dixie Chick fan, I'm not surprised you're happy to see Clear Channel retreating [if that is in fact what's happening here?].
You betcha. Not that it would help with the current album, which is stylistically all over the place (with the possible exception of Country). But "Travelin' Soldier" didn't deserve to get thrown off the charts in 2003 just because Bush and his buddies needed a straw man (woman?) to distract voters. (I may need to get one of your products after all...)
Oh, by the way, I would like to thank you and your fellow Canadians for supporting the Chicks' "Hey, we're still here!" tour! Their seven (count 'em!) kids won't go hungry after all. -
Re:I won't ask...
It's fine to demonstrate to government officials why they are being defrauded by companies into accepting electronic voting and tabulation. It's a bit of a red herring though, because the issue would be moot if we demonstrated to electors and elections officials how insane it is to rely on invisible bits to decide elections when the pencil and paper method is extremely hard to corrupt in a First World country like the USA.
I commend Slashdot's earlier efforts on defeating Diebold. Now we have to take this information to the people who have the power to just say no to elecronic voting. And those people don't appear to be the millions of minority-race, elderly, and average electors who are disenfranchised by them. -
Re:My vote goes to.....
Unfortunately it affects any place doing business with the USA, and Ontario Canada decided to change with them.
What a big waste!
http://www.abandonedstuff.com/2006/10/29/bushs-mar tial-law-bill-signed-daylight-time-replay/ Here are the levels of oil saved, and my guess as to the cost of implementation. It's a boondoggle by Bush, to distract us from real oil saving measures. -
Re:Silly Iranians
I think we should beat Iran to the punch, and Ban TV here before it's too late. Join the Teleban too, and save the children.
It's just a modest proposal to save the world! -
BAN TV! Join my Teleban movement!
Coincidentially I started the Teleban movement last night before I read this Slashdot article or the autism "relationship".
Please feel free to join my movement, I'm hoping it will become much more powerful than Fox News, and Pat Robertson combined. I will have details on free membership benefits later, and there is no cost or even effort required to participate other than letting me know you want TV banned too. It's all in good fun, and we're saving the children, so please leave a message.
Remember the Teleban motto: Friends don't let friends watch Friends. -
Re:Oh god
Good point, punctuation can kill. However, you're maybe not aware that my cat's mind was protected from world observation in a way unlike most pets

I suggest the following items:
Considering the massive force of a black hole explosion (implosion, whatever), tinfoil is *not* going to be strong enough (sorry, saskboy). I'll stock up on the following items, courtesy of the Periodic Table Table entry for "Silver":
Silver-lined tinfoil hat, cleverly disguised as a normal trucker's hat.
Silver Boxer Shorts -- while all you smartie-pants rationalists are protecting your *brains*, I'll be protecting Man's truest contribution to the future of humanity. -
Re:Two words
That's a pretty good description.
For further reading you might want to direct them to Michael Geist's site which goes into detail. He was recently featured on Slashdot for his 30 Days of DRM. I wrote about it as well here. -
Re:Technology Love you long time
Times sure HAVE changed. What used to be a time filled with heroes that inspired a generation of space travellers, has now become a time where going to a space station is a big deal, or looking at yet more pictures of Mars on the Internet. They are impressive feats, but not something that children think is really unusual and the stuff from movies and comics. I don't think there are as many people interested in seeing humans expand into space, and that's a shame. One only has to look at the volunteers at NASA's launches for evidence.
Lockheed Martin is a company with no human scruples, and is responsible for the wrecks out patrolling the US coast now with inferior designs. I'm sure most Slashdotters saw the Lockheed Martin contractor turned Whistleblower concerning YouTube videos condemning the company and Homeland Insecurity's blind eye to his list of ship problems. -
eWaste is ready to kill us, so it's better to mine
Ewaste is poisoning our water. Each TV has a lot of lead, and my provinces' IT equipment collection program set to start in 2007 won't take TVs until 2008 at the earliest. It's good that some places are capitalizing now on all of our misfortune.
eWastecanada.ca is a local business mining for gold. -
Technology can't solve a people problem
This is all a red herring anyway.
"A key question, though, is whether this kind of detection system can realistically block terrorists from bringing seemingly innocuous liquids past security and combining them later to deadly effect."
The answer to that is of course, no. You can't design an idiot proof system because they keep coming up with better idiots. No only that, I believe some hacker guy called Kevin hypothesized that you can't firewall a system to be 100% secure, because social engineering is the exploit to overcome any hole in a system.
I know this isn't a political discussion about the matter of liquid bomb sniffers for airports, but we should be crying bloody murder that the government is letting the terrorists win this time without them firing a shot. Mothers tasting their baby formula again? I recall an airport employee doing that years ago to a mother with breatmilk in a bottle, and she sued didn't she? -
Re:I've got one - need a foil wallet?
The Foil'ID Again is technically still available.
-
Re:Vista is evil -forced obsolecence
I do mind, and so should you.
You can read this article for a few reasons why, but essentially it means poorer quality hardware that is designed to break, and be unrepairable, while filling our landfills with toxic lead and other garbage from devices that should work for ten years or more.
We need to start charging companies that build devices and tools with no way to recycle or reuse them. Thanks to the FCC and digital TV, TV sets are about to fill up your city landfill and make your taxes go up. That's one reason why you should care. -
Re:Serve Beer? - next condoms
You don't just need a beer serving robot, you need one that serves CONDOMS too. Oh wait, this is Slashdot, nevermind
;-)
Oh what the heck, here it is - the condom dispensing robot you can build at home. -
Re:No capacity mentioned.
If you start inching toward measuring in metric instead, the world will be a better place.

I saw it
I think I saw that broken sun cover when it flew over my house last week. What do you think from this picture?

Schools attempt to fight this in some places
Schools bear some responsibility, by accepting sources on the Internet as valid footnotes in essays students make.
However,I found a school making a page for children to show them what a "fake" website on the Internet looks like. Here's the background behind one of the "fakes", which is actually a real item I sell, but is clearly a joke as well. -
Technically this is whining
..so feel free to mod me offtopic, but I submitted this same story with NASA as the news source and it was rejected. Perhaps my title was less interesting.

Re:Rights...
" I can Yell at the top of my lungs that gays are going to hell. But the second I start saying that Gay's need to be punished, it stops being protected speech. "
Tell that to the Sheaf, who didn't in any way threaten anyone, with their offensive cartoon.
