Guess some folks can't handle a bit of gentle constructive criticism! And I thought 'geeks' were suppose to be logical. Go figure.

I don't know about that, but I would have thought Perl was a better fit for the enterprise, due to Python's lack of 'hash references', and the paucity of modules Python has compared to perl.

Donald Knuth. Donald F'ing Knuth, geek idol, computer scientist and gift to anagrammatists everywhere. Yet another of the secular saints of the Eric Raymond crowd, and writer of TeX and Metafont, the typesetting and font design programs which lie behind half the computer books in existence (specifically, the poorly typeset half in the ugly fonts). Writer of the as yet unfinished meisterwerk of algorithm design, "The Art of Computer Programming". The avuncular figure who gave many of today's prominent "hackers" their big break. An example to us all.

Hooey. While some might think it a little poor for us to be picking on a man in the autumn of his years who has done little actual direct physical harm to others, the raison d'etre of adequacy.org is to puncture overinflated reputations, and Knuth's is one of the windiest. Every single plank of his rickety edifice seems to be based on the massive intellectual inferiority complex of the geek nation; their belief that because they don't understand something, it must be difficult. Put it this way; in our opinion, the main reason that the Art of Computer Programming remains unfinished is that when the truth gets out about Knuth, the fact that he hasn't finished his book is the only reason anyone will want to recusitate him.

I'm sorry. Readers who are sane, or who have sane acquaintances, or who are not familiar with the wilder shores of computer programmers and their personality diseases, may not quite have taken in that last passage. For their benefit, I'll repeat it, in bold, and with a hyperlink to the source so that they can independently verify that I didn't make it up to slander Knuth.

So in other words, Knuth is the kind of guy who would rather spend eight years locked away in a stinky computer lab, than pick up the phone once to complain to his typesetters and tell them to do it properly. Rather than trouble himself with five minutes of human interaction, he spent eight years snivelling over a keyboard. That's the calibre of individual we're dealing with here.

It completely beggars belief. For reference, here's how I would address this problem; brrring brrring, hello, typesetting department, jsm here, could you sort out the typesetting in my book please it's a disgrace, certainly sir, goodbye. Total time taken, five minutes max. By my calculations, this method is approximately 2,522,880 times more efficient than Knuth's. I say "approximately" because I didn't allow for leap years. I didn't allow for leap years because it's completely unimportant and a purely illustrative statistic in any case. That's an example of a "proportionate amount of effort", by the way; spending eight years correcting a typing error isn't. Not that you can do something so simple as correct a typing error in TeX without first committing an 800 page manual to memory. It's a Turing-complete language, you see, highly useful for people who want to solve the Halting Problem every time they need to change their line spacing, but how

I notice the article fails to mention that AMD chips are made in 3rd world sweatshops

Now, I'm not up on IA-64, so I can't comment on whether it's a good design or not. However, I think it's unfortunate for intel that they are in a situation where they are continually blasted by IT community.

The primary complaint with the iterations IA-32 is that the chip was overly complex (from a design and programming perspective) because Intel chose to maintain backwards compatibility. However, when they decided to start completely from scratch and create a completely new architecture with IA-64, they were roundly criticized for (wait for it) not maintaining backwards compatibility.

Now they are being written off as an also-ran that is now trying to "catch up" with AMD, which is a bit laughable when you consider that they only did what AMD has been doing for years (namely, copying a competitors design).

I think it's great that there's competition in the market, and that the consumer has largely benefitted from having two x86 vendors. But make no mistake: AMD is not the "good guy". They are not innovators by any stretch of the imagination. Many of their employees suffer deplorable work conditions. They offer a similar product at cheaper prices. End of story.

I got into a conversation today with two other people in the dorm lounge last night and we went over topics ranging from RTS games to Portland, Maine's upcoming gigantic Elvis impersonator convention, ending up discussing Is Your Son a Computer Hacker?, at which point I stepped in.

I told them about what I do for kicks and they thought that trolling was funny, so I decided to show them some of my work. I haven't really been doing much on the same lines as Adequacy, the most controversial site on the Internet or SomethingAwful's Truth Press, so I realized once they came to my room to browse through my stuff that I didn't really have anything to show them (the overly-technical flames by Theo are not really accessable to a broader audience). So one of them leaves the room to pick up his CD case that he left lying around somewhere and I remember that, hey, Trollaxor wrote some funny stuff in his journal, maybe I could show that to them.

So I load up Death on Route 69, and he sort of got a kick out of it. I said, "Hey, you want to see something really fucking disgusting and funny?" "Oh, sure."

Now, let me tell you first of all that this is someone who gets his kicks from going though SomethingAwful's Photoshop Phriday galleries and laughing at pictures depicting baby mutilation, so I figure he's a pretty tolerant guy. He just seemed like he'd get a kick out of the Linux Party. So I loaded it up in IE and let him read through it.

"Uhh...," he said as he read through it. "That's really fucking disturbing. Do you really think homosexual rape is funny?" He looked at me funny.

"Well, OK, maybe that's one of his bad examples, but there are other ones... like this one!"

I loaded up "QA: Dying of AIDS"

"OK, I GET IT. HE'S GAY, OK?"

This seriously creeped him out. I'm glad I didn't show him my gay Emad posts or, God forbid, my recent post posing as a woman.

All in all, my increased interaction in these closing weeks of my taste of college life has served to finally give me perspective into what a warped individual I have become. In seeing other people's reactions to my sense of humor, I have become fearful of what I really am.. I put on a facade when I interact with nearly fucking everyone, a quiet, polite boy who holds the door for girls and helps people study. But something else hides beneath the exterior, to use a rather trite, overblown term, and tonight the facade slipped.

Today, I am deleting all the porn from my computer. Emad will never post again, if you want the account, you can have it. Theo has sunk into such a small, esoteric reality that I don't even know what to do with him anymore. I won't visit sites like goatse.info again. Hey, it's funny guys, but that's what scares me. I can only hope that it's not too late for me to change.

I'm sorry, but I read this review and instantly thought of the imfamous "Is your son a computer hacker?" thing that we all know and love.

That's not to say that it's a bad book or the review is flawed, though some of the comments would tend to tell me that the reviewer isn't as "computer savvy" as I might like in a person reviewing a book. A properly configured border firewall, for example, will protect systems behind it. That says nothing of the duties of many of those "personal firewall" applications that are actually much more than firewalls (spam filters, scumware/spyware/adware scanner/filters, etc).

I just found it amusing that the adequacy.org article was the first thing I thought of when reading this review...

Hmmmm...ya know, sometimes the rabid advocacy doesn't make sense to me.

I've deployed FreeBSD at client sites, I've deployed Linux at client sites, and I've deployed MS stuff at client sites. You know what the kicker is? You gotta pick the solution for the problem. I've lost count of the times I've thrown in a quick FreeBSD, PHP, MySQL solution to solve a problem, and I've done the same with Linux....

The problem is, you rabid *nix d00dz want OSS installed for everything. I'm sorry....point me at the OSS equivalent of Sharepoint and I'll start deploying that. But until there exists an OSS equivalent of genuinely innovative stuff like this, then Sharepoint is the solution.

You can bitch and moan about MS insecurity, but at the end of the day, if you know your job as a network\system engineer, those problems go away.

As far as open viewpoints go, yep....some of those MS solutions address problems that the zealots haven't even thought of...even MS is allowed to tell us about them

I'm not sure I understand all of the anti-intel sentiment myself. AMD isn't the "good guys" that the geek community has made them out to be. Just like Intel, AMD doesn't arbitrarily set their prices for chips. They charge less because they have low operating and production costs. Yes, every company strives for this, but they don't always resort to sweatshops.

Looking at those KDE screenshots reminds me a lot of this old cartoon.

Showing off pictures like this or this just shows that people don't quite get it -- it like they just managed to reinvent Windows 95 plus a couple extra features.

Meanwhile the modern Windows user is used to looking at stuff like this. Totally different user experience to what you see on 'last generation' desktops. (Of course, all the Windows users on slashdot turn off this fluff, but after watching a totally new user play around with XP a bit, you realize that "task-oriented" features are actually helpful.)

I'm not saying that KDE isn't a good "power user" desktop, but the proprietary folks keep raising the bar, and having a "Start Menu" isn't enough to cut it anymore.

I don't necessarily disagree that these "diseases" are over-hyped, but I don't think there's much question that they exist. Just because a condition has a treatment or behavior that can mitigate it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Does berry-berry not exist because people could get more Thayamine and drink less alocohol?

Does scurvy not exist because people could get more Vitamine C?

I suppose malaria doesn't exist, only people stupid enough to live where there are mosquitoes?
