Re:Linux users not required.
Windows only? I thought so too when I visited the site at work.
I got home and went to the site in Linux, and was given a link to download the Linux client. Maybe your user-agent is screwed up.
Here it is if you don't believe me: http://torrents.aelitis.com:88/files/Azureus_2.5.0 .0_linux.tar.bz2 -
Re:Bullshit
The download link on Zudeo is http://torrents.aelitis.com:88/files/Azureus_2.5.
0 .0_linux.tar.bz2.I have no idea why they're pushing the site as Azureus 3.0 but that's a legitimate download link, the same one offered on the SourceForge site. Interestingly while Zudeo is handling the press, the sf page has taken a dive.
nyud.net:8080 shows they've got a prominent ad for Zudeo on the mainpage though.

Re:Hmmm???
Funny, I've been wondering that myself for years. Java is slow, clunky, breaks easily is generally an all around piece of shit.
Better tell that to the major institutions and corporations who use Java specifically because of its robustness and performance, like E-Bay or major stock exchanges which can handle hundreds of millions of transactions each day using J2EE.
Who do I believe about Java - them or you? Tricky question....
Azureus is the only java app that I've ever considered 'usable', and even then the memory requirements keep me from using it as my primary BT client.
Well set them smaller then. It only requires a single setting for the JVM: http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/MemoryUs age
If you are having memory issues with an app that can run in only few tens of megabytes of memory, you need to seriously upgrade your PC. -
Re:I can only hope
I don't think you understand. 80% of UK ISPs blindly throttle bittorrent by protocol header to 20KB/sec or bellow, so you cannot change the port number or make sure your firewall is configured correctly or anything else. Without RC4 encryption there is no hope of getting speeds better than a fifth of the provided bandwidth or bellow, even on the new 8mbps expensive contracts.
Please see this: http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/Bad_ISPs -
Going on for a long time, without ill effects
That Azureus was being used commercially is an old story : the company Aelitis , whose members are the Azureus developpers, made an extra layer of integration to add below Azureus, to make it more efficient from a commercial standpoint.

Re:Azureus
I've installed Azureus on LFS, Slackware, PCLinuxOS, Kubuntu, Windows XP and I've yet to encounter a problem. While it has it's fair share of complaints (mem+cpu mostly), it's a pretty polished OSS application. Unless you're talking about Macs (which I've never tried it on), I'd say it's quite possible that you're either trolling or creating the problem yourself.
I'm hoping you've at least checked the Wiki thoroughly.

eMule too. Avoid those isp!
In the ed2k world also more and more users begin to notice isp are throttling or blundly blocking users. As a developer one can only tell to the users to switch isp(vote with your wallet). One problem is that isp simply deny everything. An other problem is that in some countries there barely is an alternative. (Portugal, Chile)
Anyway to start I created a wiki page to document those isp's so users know what isp they should List_of_Bandwidth_throttling_ISPs wiki page
There are already 2 emule mods that support protocol obfuscations like utorrent/azareus but since encryption only works if both peers uses it this still is of limited use.
Anyway those mods are neomule and Sion emule
Try to avoid such isp if possible, or contact your local consumer body to take legal action.

Re:This can be fixed
I think you are talking about Vivaldi, which computes the distance between nodes based on ping time and preferentially selects the closest. Not directly selecting local nodes, but it does in practice.

Only in the UK
There hasn't been a company in the US doing this (unless you want to count the numerous colleges blocking the normal ports). If they want a solution, they can block all the ports except for 80, 443, 21, 59, 6667, and a few more. If no one is using 6667 for an IRC server they could then use that for torrents, which is probably a big deal to a ISP.
The major thing about all this now is that encryption has come into play. Encryption of course sort of hides what kind of data is going through that port, but it also enables for some connections that won't work unencrypted to work better. Most smart torrent users are not using 6881-6889 anyway. (The first solution to traffic shaping was changing the port.) Azureus and uTorrent both support encryption now, specifically an implementation of RC4. So then what now? Should the cable companies make encryption a violation of terms of service? Or even go as far as to lobby the Congress (I'm talking US) to make it illegal without some sort of license (VeriSign would have it first of course)? It all sounds crazy to me.
I feel like this article is only talking about UK, but I'm sure the US companies are thinking about it (I think there was one that did it, can't remember name). And there was definitely one in Canada who set traffic shaping to their service. Canadian users are also encrypting to get past it. It seems like there will always be a way. -
Re:This can be fixed
To the best of my knowledge Azureus doesn't yet, but intends to. You can read about their Vivaldi system on their wiki. (Version as of the time I posted.) It's designed to compute nodes that are close to each other so that Azureus can pick closer peers.
However, they don't actually use it yet, according to that page. But there is work towards it.

Re:Decentralize / Anonymous
Support is already enabled. Only problem is that the people behind tor have made it very clear that they DON'T want people to do that.
Think of Tor more for a tool for free speech, not copyright infringement.
Of course, nothing is stopping us from making our own onion network, if anything to enable plausible deniability. -

Re:Encryption won't work anyhowYou're clearly not keeping up with p2p technology. Bitcomet has had the option to encrypt headers for quite some time now, and Azureus has added that feature (in beta).
For example, from the Azureus wiki:
The following encapsulation protocol is designed to provide a completely random-looking header and (optionally) payload to avoid passive protocol identification and traffic shaping. When it is used with the stronger encryption mode (RC4) it also provides reasonable security for the encapsulated content against passive eavesdroppers. -
Re:Ugh, that's annoying.
1. Some people may read those reviews to see if there's better software than their current one available so they may already be using BT.
fair enough, but my point is that the majority of people are probably new to BT and are in the process of learning. regardless
... if you are bothered by the presence of facts that are well-known, and trivial, and "tired" IYHO, then simply don't read the article. it's a pretty good indicator that it wasn't written for you.
2. BT is designed to be a replacement for HTTP downloads (or at least that's the thing it's closest to), due to its centralized nature it's too easy to shut down to be good for warez groups. That's where things like eDonkey or all those P2P systems designed for anonymity are better choices.
check of Azureus's distributed tracker feature. also note that azureus is the highest-rated BT client in the review. regardless, you can't argue w/ the facts. BT is overwhelmingly used for illegal purposes.

Re:Protocol Header Encryption - Linux Clients?
uTorrent is working on this right now. BitComet hasn't really given any information about their implementation, so ludde, the uT developer, has to do it from scratch. However, supposedly it might be released for other clients to implement. I say "supposedly" and "might" because I can't find concrete evidence on the uT forums right now to back this up. Azureus has also been working with their own header encryption which is in CVS. Check out the Azureus wiki for more information.
-
Logical explanation....The temporary rise in various non-BitTorrent P2P networks in November is DEFINITELY due to the launch of Azureus 2.3.0.6.
Thousands of users made the switch after realizing that they're STILL going to have to put up with the infamous NAT Error, and it STILL drives Ubuntu users crazy...

Re:SOIX!
Is "superseeding" some sort of torrent terminology I was previously unaware of?
Yes, actually. It's a feature in Azureus designed for when you're the first or only seed. If you're not the first or only, it's particularly inefficient & screws up the balance in the torrent, so it's not recommended unless you need it. More info at the Azureus wiki.

Re:Intranet only?
You can tell the azureus client to disable any externel peer sources, and only look for peers from the tracker in the torrent file.
http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/SecureTo rrents -
Since TFA is a bit short on details...... here's some more info on this, assuming it's compatible with Azureus:
- Peers are located with an overlay network based on the Kademlia algorithm, with small tweaks.
- You can enter the overlay network either by a central seed node (which is needed only one per install) or by asking some of your peers on some other torrent for their DHT addresses.
- Azureus has a magnet link system, where given a 'magnet link' containing the infohash of the torrent, it will use the DHT to find a peer and download the
.torrent file from them. Hopefully the official client will get this as well. - Yes, this really does work. Grab a copy of Azureus 2.3.0.0 and enter magnet:?xt=urn:btih:MC2ZPC2TCW2TJTY5DSSOMDX533EPX
V FU (no spaces!) into the open location box to try it out. Be sure to wait for the dot on the bottom to change from yellow/"Initializing..." to green, and open your UDP port (same as torrent data port by default) - Check out the Azureus wiki for more info.

Re:COOL
You can already use your own computer as a tracker. I don't know how many users it could support (probably a hell of a lot) but I've done it before for getting movies I've made with friends out to those friends after I've edited them. (Believe me, don't believe me, I don't care)
I did it with Azureus which is the only BT client I've used. I don't know if others can do it too. Sure you have to have your computer on all the time but don't you already?
