Re:Keep this man away from my AAPL
Wired ran a piece called 100 Ways to Save Apple
I fell in love with Macs in February of 98 (after building my own Souped-up AMD 486 DX/4 100) when I spent my college grant money on a Macintosh IIsi with a grey-scale screen.I had about 10 people buy that issue of Wired for me as a gift because of the fucking phenomenal cover.
A lot of the ideas were tongue-in-cheek, not stupid, and others (like Rhapsody on Intel) were just short-sighted. Apple took notes on ways 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 23, 25, 29, 37, 38, 43, 44, 46, 50, 52, 53, 54, 56, 62, 63, 70, 72 (with USB), 74, 75, 83, 84, 85, 91, 94, 95, 98, 100 (with Xserve).
People feel very passionate about Apple, one way or another, and that's always a good thing when people care about your product.

Re:I say we support the BSA in this area.
Somebody's incredibly dense.
I'm stating in a not-so-precise way my belief that if many of the so-called "pirates" knew about F/OS software, they would use it. I did not mean to condone the actions of the BSA in any way.
For fun, may I refer you this banner ad, which once appeared on Slashdot.
Now STFU. -
Re:Semantics confusing
I think the language is ambigous, if you read the spec sheet (pdf) the language is specifically The liquid cooling system is also controlled by Mac OS X, which dynamically adjusts the flow of the fluid and the speed of the fans based on the amount of heat being generated.". This would imply that the flow is not controlled by changing the fan speed. While your technical description seems correct given the picture, the language is a tad more confusing. We'll have to wait and see when apple puts out a more technical document on how it works.
-
Re:It's NOT liquid cooled.
What's odd: no pictures of the internals of the liquid-cooled model yet.
Here's a picture of the internals of a liquid-cooled model. All the guts are sealed, for obvious reasons. -
Re:Liquid Cooling is, uh, cool
I was just about to say you're wrong, but this (pdf) says you're right. It's not clear whether they moved all of them to the
.90nm process, or just the 2.5's.
Could G5 Powerbooks be far behind? -
Room temp water cooling for processor #2
I'm no hardware engineer, but looking at this artist rendering (akamai.net is an image host for all Apple.com images) of Apple's liquid cooling system, I think the processors are getting different cooling.
It would appear that the liquid passes over processor #1, then #2, then back to the heat sink to be diffused by the fan blowing over it. This would say to me that processor #2 is getting at best room temp water cooling, while proc #1 is getting cold water cooling.
Here's my reasoning: If the heat sink with the fan blowing over it can cool the water 2X degrees, then when it is leaving the cooling system it is at Room Temp (RT) - X degrees. It passes over both processors and returns to the cooling system at RT+X degrees, where it is cooled by 2X and leaves the system at RT-X, headed for the hot processors again, follow?
So here's the meat of it: both processors together heat the water up by 2X (see above). That means each processor heats the water by X, so when the cool water leaves, it is at temp RT-X, passes over the heat sink and it raised to (RT-X)+X=RT which then passes over the second processor and cools it to RT+X where it returns.
So the second processor is getting room temp water cooling while the first is getting RT-X cooling. What effect will this have on the system? -
Water cooling...
Did anyone else notice that the lower processor on this diagram doesn't appear to be turned on?
Come on, Apple. I want purple and red water coming out of both processors!

RIAA "Feature"???
Based on This screen shot, it implies you can only listen to your iTunes on your computer OR Erik's Bedroom OR Kitchen speakers OR Living room stereo. NOT simultaneously. Seems like a sucky feature. Am I wrong?
-
Re:Nifty for the price - but not a Squeezebox
I am not sure what you mean by this. There is an 1/8th inch mini jack right on the AirPort Express. And for an extra $39 you can get the AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit with Monster Cables which includes, "a Monster mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable, a Monster mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable and an AirPort Express power extension cord." I am not sure what else you could ask for.- no headphone output or proper audio connectors

Re:Branding it as Windows
Fair point, but by the same token, your argument is equally valid for the OS X cluster at Virginia Tech. Not having eyeballed it personally, and basing my information purely off Steve Jobs keynote speech at MacWorld 2004, they made a point of saying "hey, this is great, we have the same GUI that runs on the cluster as the one that runs on my personal workstation".
It's quite likely that your suggestion of a GUI-less edition of Windows is feasible, and you'd hope that with the BSD core of OS X that it's even easier for Apple to do the same. You'd have to address the question to what extent is it possible to perform all functions through a non-GUI interface. -

Re:How often do you look at you keyboard?
actually, the idea of only the prints on the Keys glowing is much better than this IMHO unusable glowing thing. Built-in light sensors automatically adjust the keyboard illumination (and the screen's brightness) based on the available ambient light.

Huh.....
Stuff like this might help keep Mac sales from sagging significantly Q/Q again. iBook's flat. GO APPLE!
When will they adopt honest accounting of stock options? I'm thinking never. Discuss. -
Ridiculous
First off I must say that while I'm not a mac fan (the only one I own is an aging PowerBook runningYellowDog) I've always admired Mac and wnated one since OSX came out. I think I'll wait till the G5 hits the PowerBook...but thats besides the point.
When I read the news I went to checkout what I could get as a minimum configuration... then I found that this clear plastic eMac stand COST $95 (you can find it when you select the eMac; price is from apple.ca). I'm sorry but thats WAY too much for a piece of plastic that should come with a monitor. I'm going to have to be very skeptical next time some MAcFan tells me Macs aren't over priced.
On the other hand it's nice to see the canadian prices being cheaper than it would be to go down to the states and exchange currency. -

Mod Story: -1 Troll
I use Mac OS X and Linux but sometimes it is simply convenient to have a Windows computer to do some specific task
I agree, windows can be convenient for some things, but I think you will find most OS's come with windows these days.MacOS X already comes with a very nice windows system. Also, have you tried using XWindows on GNU/Linux?
I've got mod points and I would mod this story -1 troll if I could.

oh my bad you're right...
a "Contact Information" means information that allows someone to identify or contact you, including, for example: your name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. Contact Information is a subset of Account Information and is thus linked to your TiVo DVR's Service Number. Your ZIP code by itself, while part of your address, is not Contact Information because your ZIP code alone does not allow someone to identify or contact you. NOTE: If your TiVo DVR is receiving the TiVo Basic service, you are not required to provide TiVo with any Contact Information from that TiVo DVR.
b "Service Information" means information necessary for TiVo to provide service to your TiVo DVR. Examples of Service Information include your software version number, your TV programming source, level of service, and the success status of the last attempted service connection (e.g., periodic call). This information is always transmitted to TiVo when connected to the TiVo servers. TiVo's `Privacy' Policy
I have to stop and wonder at their claims... They can bill you via identification, but not 'know' who you are?... Ok fine. So what happens when something similar to the RIAA comes out for TV, because after all unless you're blind you would see those annoying FBI warnings that come on when watching movies. Or did you think you didn't need permission to record that. So (of course a what if scenario) what happens when lawsuits start dropping on users of TiVo... "Hey we're you're friends, we would never monitor your habits for targeted advertising and sell millions of users' information for mmillions. We're honest because by golly we're TiVo, and although we monitor what you watch to target advertisers to you we would never give out your info."
Hrmm sure alright, you're right I am a troll. Corporations would never do the wrong thing like sell your information for millions. They all have morals.

The G5 is NOT a 64-bit "machine"
And today we already have the PowerPC G5.
If your definition of 64-bit is a 32-bit operating system around a 64-bit chip, then the G5 is a 64-bit platform. Mac OS X 10.2.7 (and the upcoming 10.3) is not a 64-bit operating system. This is particularly frustrating because Apple's marketing machine has very carefully crafted their message to make a reasonable person believe the operating system is 64-bit, especially if you download and read Power Mac G5 Tech Overview (PDF). Apple says about the G5 version of Mac OS X that it runs all of your software -- and runs it faster -- with a version of Mac OS X Jaguar specially tuned for the PowerPC G5 processor, providing a seamless transition to 64-bit power. That's only the beginning of the smoke and mirrors. The 64-bit power only gives users two things: the operating system can address up to 8GB of RAM, though user programs are still limited to 4GB, and some of the G5 numerical hardware is available with a special version of GCC (3.3).

Timely marketing
I like how the current marketing banner rotates between screenshots of Nasa's Mars Rover site, the Patriots winning the Super Bowl, and eBay [for people who don't like iTunes or Pepsi?]. Nice demographic spread there -- screenshots that'll appeal to (for example) me the science fan, my brothers the football fans, and my dad the online auction junkie. Somehow, I think that spread will cover a lot -- not all, but a lot -- of Safari's audience. Clever...

Re:Apache 2.0?
According to this PDF from Apple, Mac OS X Server already carries both Apache 1.3 and 2.x. If you only have OS X client, you can also download a bundled Apache 2 package from Server Logistics here, if you really want it. I tried it about a year ago, I remember it has a nice preferance pane with which you can change some settings, restart the server, and view and edit your httpd.conf (although it was a little buggy with saving the file, TextEdit had problems with the permissions)... It couldn't do anything that wasn't just as easy to do from the command line, though.

Re:Try a PowerBook G4
Why not buy 2 Dell Notebooks @ $999 USD each for the price of 1 PowerBook G4 notebook $1999 USD each? That way, he can have a new notebook and have a brand new one for replacement instantly if something ever goes wrong out of warranty.
Considering that repairing the same problem (replacing the bezel, and, hence, the LCD) on a PowerBook G4 (DURING the included 1 year limited warranty) would cost, according to Apple, $1308.95 USD for repair, shipping, handling, and support (Tier 4 repair for "LCD"... this would be out of the warranty because it is assumed that it was "Damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, and misapplication" causing the broken bezel that is explicitly NOT covered under Apple's limited warranty.").
Alternately, he can purchase AppleCare for his PowerBook G4 for $349 USD at the time of purchase, unless he lives in Florida (according to the Apple web page, at the bottom: "This plan (AppleCare) is not available for Florida consumers or where prohibited by law.").
On the other hand, the AppleCare plan only covers manufacturer defects for a longer period than the usual (and a longer period of complimentary telephone support). It still does NOT cover, According to Apple's Terms and Conditions for AppleCare"Damage due to accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider), unauthorized modification, improper environment (including lack of proper temperature or humidity), unusual physical or electrical stress or interference, failure or fluctuation of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, or acts of God;"
Not that Dell, or any other manufacturer's warranty usually covers repairs of damage caused accidentally, but it really wouldn't help the gentleman in this situation to have an Apple PowerBook G4, as he could probably buy an entire new notebook for the $1308.95 USD for repair, shipping, handling, and support it would cost to solve the same problem if he owned a PowerBook G4.
Of course, your entire argument is that it would simply NEVER happen to an Apple notebook because of the quality, worksmanship, design, materials, etc. Interesting, but defects DO happen (browse some Apple forums (such as MacFixIt (here and here (for instance there was a White Spot issue that affected as many as 25% of PowerBook 15" Firewire 800 G4's and an assortment of iBooks... apparently, it's still ongoing (probably a manufacturing and design problem)!))) and see for yourself unless you're into denial in a big way), and probably as often to Apples as to other distributors (Dell, etc.). They ARE manufactured in the same plants with underpaid workers in third world countries as Dells, etc. are manufactured. They are just sold for more to consumers.
There should be a new moderation category called "-1 Apple Advertisement". -
Re:So much power
Well, the new XServe G5 will be using 90nm process:

Re:Business Apps are what it's all about! But the one area that Open Source is very wanting is easy Application Install packages. You know, click-throughs and what not, fewer compatibility issues, and being able to handle compatibility issues in a more intuitive way.
You need to really look at the strengths of Linux. The Linux package managers are light years ahead of windows. So some random rpm you download doesn't work, using some frontend. You aren't going to have users installing it in the corperate environment. Instead, you will have people issue one command and have it ssh (or other methods) and do an apt-get update, apt-get install new-corperate-package from your private mirror, and possibly apt-get upgrade to install any updates.
The package management is one of the greatest strenghs of Linux. Any GUI Installer thing better work with the native package manager, or it will be as broken as windows is in this area. If you doubt it, test this: install an update to a package (say openoffice) on 6 windows computers, now do the same for 6 linux computers. Up that to 10, 25, 100, 400 computers and you might understand. If you understand it, then the linux command can be one command (admittedly a complex one, but it could be a very simple shell script), but I know of no package managers on Windows that will allow easy installs of packages over a network. (Norton Ghost is $26-36 a seat, and starts to provide equivelent services.)
