Re:Can someone please explain this?
If you want to download streaming Windows Media, try ASFRecorder on Windows/Linux/etc.
If it's the Quicktime video, look at the page source and look for a URL like:
http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/a518c4ff1125bc/1 a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02 589f25382f668c9329e0375e8178ef01f93c6f55ecc40a5178 5e65ac332a0016d/T3-international-tlr_480.mov

Save instructions for Windows XP, IE6
Here are the saving instruction for Windows XP and IE6.
I downloaded the high resolution trailer, so it's about 14 MB
Here is the direct link, hopefully it hasn't expired yet.
http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/a518c4ff1125bc/1 a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02 589f25382f668c9329e0375e8178ef01f93c6f55ecc40a5178 5e65ac332a0016d/T3-international-tlr_m480.mov
If you clicked on the given link above and downloaded the trailer directly, then you can skip Step 1. Go directly to Step 3.
1. View the HTML source, search for the name "T3-internation-tlr_480.mov"
1a. Change this to "T3-internation-tlr_m480.mov"
2. You should now have the http address:
http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/a518c4ff1125bc/1 a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02 589f25382f668c9329e0375e8178ef01f93c6f55ecc40a5178 5e65ac332a0016d/T3-international-tlr_m480.mov
Open it up in a web browser, and let it your browser download the trailer.
3. Open up a command prompt.
4. Go to the location:
"C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\"
5. Do a "dir" search with the /a /s switches enabled. Like:
dir /a /s *.mov
6. Hopefully this will come up with something. For my system, I downloaded the high resolution trailer. So my search came up with:
"T3-international-tlr_m480[1].mov"
7. Copy this to another location on your hard drive.
copy "T3-international-tlr_m480[1].mov" C:\Temp
8. Simple as that right? -
Re:Direct Link...
Ok - when you look at the page, you want to find the EMBED tag that holds the movie, so try the following command:
curl http://www.apple.com/trailers/columbia/charliesang elsfullthrottle/large_trailer.html | grep EMBED
Looking at the embed tag, you will see that it references two quick time movies, one as a SRC argument, and one as a HREF argument. If both are given, you want the HREF, otherwise, you want the SRC.
here is the link from the HREF option. It is the reference file for the movie.
Now, download it and run strings on it. You will see several instances of "url" on one line, and a url on the next line. These are the movies that the reference movie points to. Almost always, the first several will be to inform users that they have too old of a version of quick time (they usually have a quicktime version embedded in the name. ) skip over them.
at the end of the file, you will see this: ca2_fullthrottle-tlr_m480.mov - that is the relative path to the real movie file.
Take the URL for the reference file, and replace ca2_fullthrottle-tlr_481.mov with ca2_fullthrottle-tlr_m480.mov, and you will have this - the url for the actual movie data file.
This technique should work, even if Apple changes their convention of just adding a m before the size of the movie, to indicate the real file.
This also only works if the movie is being served over http. If it is over rtsp, you will need some extra tools.
I hope this helps. If you get confused, here is a decompiled version of the reference file, so that you can see in plain text what all of the embedded urls are for. -

Enjoy. Looks pretty danged cool to me.

mplayer
MPlayer plays it very well. Just go to the page with the movie, press Ctrl-I to get the list of media links in the page, copy and paste it:
$ mplayer 'http://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/a518c4ff1125bc

Direct link to the movie file for poor windows sods who are stuck with the QuickTime player (14 MB) (just in case you wanted to save that to your HD for some obscure reason (read: it sucks).

Direct Link...Here's a direct link to the large version:
You can do this yourself for the other trailers by viewing the pagesource and putting the letter 'm' before the resolution number.

Re:maybe get this on the bittorrent server?
I'd recommend ASFRecorder when it works. That file includes a Win32 binary and the
.c source which can be compiled thusly:
gcc asfrecorder.c -o asfrecorder
And then just:
asfrecorder http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/underworld/vide o/trailer/trailer_high.asx
With mplayer it isn't quite as easy to capture streamed data:
mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile underworld_teaser_trailer_high.asf mms://agency2wm.fplive.net/agency/2/2/film/underwo rld/underworld_teaser_trailer_high.asf
Of course, if you're using mplayer/xine, you might find the Quicktime version a bit better:

Re:Not good at all...
Interesting. Their last 10-Q statement
shows $6.4B in assets with $3.4B in cash. Interest income was $23M, offsetting $4M in losses and $5M in taxes for a net income of $14M.True, I'd love to be seeing the $40M in net income that they has a year ago, but I suppose a profit is a profit no matter how they get it.
-
Re:Not good at all...
Sales are not up. Proof
Q2 '02 = 813 thousand units totalling $1,495 million
Q2 '03 = 711 thousand units totalling $1,475 million
Q1 '03 = 743 thousand units totalling $1,472 million
At best, they are treading water. At worst, sales are slipping on everything except for PowerBooks, due to new models being released. Apple sold 102 thousand less units than Q2 of 2002. That is bad. -
i was just about to sell my audiotron
When I looked at this page, the music player requires the Tivo desktop software, which you can only use on a PC or Mac. It might work with wine, but the interface doesn't look very intuitive. I will wait till the reviews come out before forking over $99 for functionality I thought was going to be included for free at a later date with my series 2 purchase and lifetime subscription.
-
Is it just me...
...or is anyone else creeped out by that TiVo icon?

Two different approaches
Really, is it a surprise that Apple continues to survive in the MS-dominated world? Look at the "innovations" from Microsoft - Media Center, DRM, Windows Update (damn, you need IE for that),
... nothing really to make most users say "geez, that IS useful. cool!"
Now look at Apple - "you mean I can now automatically do basically anything with this PDF I'm about to print? Damn, that sounds really useful. I'll be able to get this done way quicker and have more time for X" (see here)
BTW, MS has VBA, which can be used to do all sorts of shit on your PC, like Outlook viruses, Word viruses, etc, but Apple's AppleScript seems to be relatively secure whilst still providing enough functionality (see the bottom of this). Although perhaps it's because Apple's marketshare isn't seen as big enough for virus-writers to really take notice - I don't know.
Okay, that's not exactly a rock-solid proof, but I think it does illustrate the orthogonal directions Apple and MS seem to be taking - MS wants more and more control of what you do with your computer (eg, WM8 or 9 or whatever they're up to), while Apple introduces features like the aforementioned that are actually somewhat useful. They also make changes when their users whinge (eg, some of the stuff they put in Jaguar to satisfy old-skool Mac fans).
Perhaps this is just part of Apple and Steve Jobs being 'cool', but it sure makes sense in the OS industry. I'm almost at the stage where I'd consider going MacOSX (with X11) when I next upgrade (at least a year from now, though) -

Sigh...Apple is the only entity that i know that can make ANYTHING pretty. I always regarded X as one of the ugliest, roughest, most uncivilised beasts of modern software. But look at this! Even the logo is pretty.
To go even further, here's your typical implementation of AIM for Windows. And then there's Apple's implementation of AIM.
And i don't even have to mention their hardware. Sigh... i hope you get paid handsomely, noble Apple design team. WE SALUTE YOU!

Re:They gave the source back for KHTML???Didja miss the line at the bottom of the page that stated:
"You can download the source code for WebCore (1 MB) and JavaScriptCore (321 KB)."
I took that to mean, quite literally, they release the source code for the rendering engine. Could be all that crack i'm smoking though.

What constitutes a hardware device at Apple? Now this guy used the iTools SDK, develops something the terms said he couldn't, and he's the hero? Apple obeys the terms of the license, this guy didn't.
Really?
The proprietary iTunes software developer kit used by Speth was intended only for making iTunes connect to hardware devices, not to other Macs, according to Apple.
Oh well, what can you do when Apple declares that a Macintosh is not a hardware device, but a web server is (hence the brushed metal appearance of Safari). -

IE & Powerpoint replacements - is Microsoft go
In the software section of the website detailing the new, tiny Powerbook, IE is off of OS X's Dock and Safari is on. Keynote is a PowerPoint replacement made by Apple.
What you should be wondering is not just whether Apple is trying to compete with Microsoft (and to end its dependence on MS for such a key piece of its OS as the browser) but if Microsoft has started warning Apple that it's going to leave. IE is still listed on the same software page, which doesn't mention Safari by name. There's some posturing going on here, and I'm not real sure what the motives are.
Fwiw, been testing Safari. Super-fast with a clean interface, but doesn't do nearly as good/mature a job displaying hard core dhtml as Mozilla, and therefore Chimera. Good freshman effort, but Apple better not stop at version 1.0. -
Your missing the point
The fact that they have these types of social interactions is not new, what is new is that distinct geographically isolated populations have different ways of accomplishing the same thing.
NPR ran a nice piece on this today, and used the example of a fruit which one population eats by getting it open with a stick (a picture is included in the MSNBC article). A neighboring population seperated by a river, either eats the fruit by bashing it on rocks (much more inneficient) or by ignoring it as too hard to bother with. i.e. one population has learned to use a tool for specific task and has passed that information on the other Orangs in the community. Its the passing on of this knowledge, and the fact that it couldn't be passed to the neighboring population that makes this 'culture'.
From a SlashDot perspective, one could speculate that on the one side of the river, the solution for eating the fruit has been open sourced. But on the other side of the river, the solution was either never discovered, or if it was found, was closed source and died with its dicoverer(s).
Other examples given are a Kiss-Squeek gesture & sound, and "snag riding" a demonstration of male virility of breaking off trees and holding on to them while they fall, jumping off before they hit the ground (Orang candidates for the Darwin Awards perhaps?).
