Re:What ignorance gets published these days
> Neither 'lucid dreams' nor 'OBE's nor 'NDEs' are evidence of any non-physical aspect of human consciousness.
You are completely ignorant of history.
When TWO people have a shared OBE and they can describe, in detail, the SAME experience then yes there is evidence.
I suggest you read My Big Toe
> There are no such things as 'spiritual beings'. There are no 'spirits', there is no 'spiritual plane'.
Incorrect. You will find how just completely ignorant you are after your death -- the _experience_ of your consciousness surviving death IS one of the proofs.

Re:Consciousness...
I typically don't gain consciousness until after lunch since I get up at 4:30AM, catch the express bus at 6:00AM, and start work at 7:00AM. With a few hours left at work, I'm ready to start the rest of my day.
I see. So you're a pathetic man-child who can't manage to organize his day in such a way that he's awake and alert during work hours?
It's probably that yo-yoing blood sugar, Creimer. You should go get your HbA1C checked by your doctor. And while you're at it, have your liver & kidney function checked, as well as your blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol, and have your extremities checked for neuropathy. You might also want to bring up the possibility of bariatric surgery with your physician, since it's obvious that "dieting" and "exercise" isn't going to fix the issue for you. You don't have the willpower nor the willingness to accept help, that it'll require to stave off an early death from metabolic syndrome complications.
Seriously, seek help.

Re: These applications still exist?
Dear Mr. Reimer:
Section 5 of the Amazon.com Associates program Operating Agreement (excerpted below) clearly spells out the need for you to identify yourself as an Amazon Associate on your Site, or any other location where Amazon may authorize your display or other use of Content.
You must clearly state the following on your Site or any other location where Amazon may authorize your display or other use of Content: “We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.” Except for this disclosure, you will not make any public communication with respect to this Agreement or your participation in the Associates Program. You will not misrepresent or embellish our relationship with you (including by expressing or implying that we support, sponsor, or endorse you), or express or imply any affiliation between us and you or any other person or entity except as expressly permitted by this Agreement.
It has come to our attention that you have failed to comply with this requirement repeatedly in your activities on Slashdot.org, and in doing so, you are adversely impacting the brand image and intellectual property of Amazon.com. Please desist in all non-compliant use of Amazon Associate links, or we will be forced to take adverse action against your account.
Thank you,
John Smith

Re:Negligence or malfeasance - you pick
I'm amazed that people are all mad about the stock sales and everything. I mean, yes, that's illegal, but we have bigger problems--which we can fix (YouTube).
You can get a credit card or open up a car loan? You can afford $18. I wish the Neo would go Gen 4 with USB-C already; I'll probably settle for a 4C.

Brush with it (at least twice a day) and when done spit it all out but DO NOT RINSE. There is nothing harmful or toxic in it to humans. The harmful bacteria will eat the Xylitol and simply die because they can't process/digest it.

unlike Cortana or Siri you can change Alexa Name
Unlike in the cases of Cortana and Siri, you can change Alexa's Name to a number of pre-defined alternative names (currently 4, pettition amazon for more).
While I concur with people saying that this technology has security implications and is best avoided, I sugest changing the wake voice command (name) of your smart speaker as a way to lower this type of pranks.

5. Identifying Yourself as an Associate

I don't recall seeing that "We are a participant in..." phrase published in your signature at all in all your months of spamming Slashdot... I wonder if failure to identify yourself is an actionable offense in Amazon's view? All I ever saw was you poisoning people's browser sessions by injecting your affiliate code into all the links, which means that any purchase ANYBODY unfortunate enough to click one of your links made within 24 hours of clicking your links were credited as earnings to you.
(w) You will not use a link shortening service in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site.
(Source)
*cough* IIRC, weren't there some bit.ly links obscuring amazon affiliate links being spammed by you, too?
tsk tsk, creimer. Gotta read that fine print.

Re:NPR's 100 Science fiction books
I've slowly been making my way through NPR's 100 Science fiction books, I say slowly because even though I read a lot, I also belong to a book club, and the list is not just a list of books, but a list of book series, and if I like an author a lot I may read a lot by that author before I come back to pick up another in the list. I'm mostly NOT reading those that are fantasy, at least not for now, even though I've read some. I'm currently about 55 in.
Pick this one up while you're at it so you don't miss some of the best short stories.
The Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction
Except "Nerval's Lobster"... that story actually mentions Slashdot so people like it here, but it's a standout in this book because it's so bad. -
Re:The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
One of the defining eye opening experiences of my life with Asperger's was when I started taking anti-anxiety medications. The difference was night and day. All of the ten thousand things I used to worry about faded away into the background and only the really actually significant issues remained to focus on. It helped tremendously with my social interactions because I no longer had a paralyzing fear of doing or saying the wrong thing in new social situations. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I don't plan on ever going back. It helped me finally feel normal.
You mileage may vary of course, but as life altering as it was for me, I recommend fellow Aspie's to at least look into it. Also, book-wise, Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by John Elder Robinson was wonderfully insightful and reflected a great many of my types of experiences. -

You Don't Know JS
I came across a blog post that mentioned that most programmers who work with JavaScript frameworks don't have a solid understanding of JavaScript beyond what they need for the framework. Since frameworks are an abstraction of JavaScript, it's easy to get stuck if you don't understand how JavaScript works. This ebook was recommended: "You Don't Know JS: Up & Going". The first in a series of short ebooks that explain the JavaScript language.

Bobiverse series. Loving it...
On the most recent book of the Bobiverse series. Basically a modern day nerd engineer ends up as the consciousness controlling a space probe in the future. We've heard that before, but this one is witty, and as Bob replicates himself, the byplay between the various Bobs as they explore the galaxy is pretty hilarious. Not too many dead spots in the story 3 books in, and the chuckles come on a regular basis. I ran across this one by accident, and have been binge reading the series for a few days now. Along the same lines, if you'd like to play a game that feels related in theme and tone, try SOMA.

Media and non-media shipping work differently
That's not how amazon works. Amazon gives the seller a "credit" for the amount of shipping regardless of what the actual shipping is.
Are you referring to media products (books, music CDs, DVDs, etc.) or non-media products?
It would work much better if the seller could actually set the shipping rate and give discounts for multiple items shipped together like you can on ebay.
Amazon works this way for professional sellers of non-media products. This R/C car dealer in Fort Wayne, Indiana, gave discounts for combined shipping last I checked.

Re:So?
ShanghaiBill suggested:
One problem Amazon has is that they can't simply take down a product with fake reviews
They don't need to take down the product. They just need to take down the fake reviews.
An obvious improvement would be stop allowing reviews from people that didn't buy the product.
The problem with that is that it would also eliminate reviews from people who, in fact, did buy the product - but not from Amazon.
The truth is that Amazon rarely offers the lowest price on the products they sell, at least in part because it rakes off such a high percentage of the sales price for itself by comparison with eBay and other competing outlets. So, for instance, I recently bought a Behringer UltraChorus UC200 foot pedal on eBay for $24.99, shipping included. Amazon's sellers can't and don't match that price, but several of them do sell the same pedal. If I cross-post my eBay review to Amazon, your solution would prevent potential buyers from considering my objective, human-generated, arguably-expert review:
"A basic, decent-sounding chorus in a plastic housing that has an inconveniently-located 9V jack, a VERY inconvenient battery compartment access design, and which produces an annoying, regular click when it's on, but not receiving signal from the guitar. Can be adjusted to add anything from a faint shimmer to a full-on whooshing, near-phaser effect. The tone control is a potentially useful feature, the output level control less so. You could do worse for more money with a different product - but to do better, you will defintiely have to spend considerably more."
I'm not convinced that would be particularly helpful.
(Posting as AC only to keep from undoing previous upmods - including one on the parent).

Re: Sadly he became a Trumpist in his last days
I don't disagree that he had inflated memories of the reach of his opinions, that he may have become more ideologically rigid as he aged, or that he was pointlessly contrarian, but I would say he fits the criteria of Fauxbertarian instead. All his protests regarding the size of government, or its scope and nature, were merely feigned, sputterings of an affectation that he adopted because he simply could not accept his genuine sentiments so he needed to seek refuge in a self-deluded illusion.
Like many similarly arrogant and controlling people, he wanted freedom for himself, the unfettered right to behave as he pleased, but saw no problem in binding others who were not as qualified to be independent and free, but needed to be regularly chastised and subjugated.
However, in what may interest you, there is a sequel to the series by a J. (Jennifer) R. Pournelle with a description that reads like it was meant to enrage the Sad Puppies, so you might wish to try it.
