Re:Ubuntu
My two favorite versions of Linux are Ubuntu and Kubunutu. Kubunutu is actually just a version of Ubuntu that uses the KDE desktop environment instead of the Gnome desktop environment. A person can install either one and then just use the Synaptic package manager to download and install the other one too. After that you can choose to use either KDE or Gnome when you are booting up by clicking on the session button on the login screen and choosing either KDE or Gnome. If someone has already installed Ubuntu and has a high-speed Internet connection they can use the Synaptic package manager to also install the kubuntu-desktop package. If someone started by installing Kubuntu they can add the Gnome stuff by using Adept (or Synaptic if it is already installed) to download and install the gnome-desktop-environment. I have both installed on my computer at home and use KDE most of the time.
Either KDE or Gnome would be a good choice although I have a slight preference for KDE. Most Ubuntu books and on-line instructions assume that your are using Ubuntu with Gnome instead of Kubuntu with KDE so when starting out it is easier to follow the directions when using Ubuntu and Gnome.
There is an on-line discussion forum for Ubuntu users here:
There are also books about using Ubuntu Linux such as these:
One of my favorite features that the Linux desktop has which Windows lacks is the multiple virtual desktops. What is that? Well, sometimes I have several programs open at once and I want a fresh clean screen to fill up with more stuff but don't want to close any programs or even minimize them. I click on one of the rectangles in the row of rectangles on the taskbar and suddenly, I have another fresh clean empty screen to open more programs in. To return to the other desktop with my other stuff, I just click on the appropriate rectangle. In KDE, each virtual desktop can have its own wallpaper too. Windows doesn't have that, perhaps a barely computer literate Windows user might be confused by a useful feature like that. Sometimes, I have about a dozen programs open at once, all scattered across about 4 or 5 virtual desktops. When using Windows, everything feels much more cramped for space and cluttered without the multiple virtual desktops.
When using a Debian derived Linux distribution such as Ubunutu, Kubunu or Mepis have fun downloading some free new programs from the hundreds of available free programs that are listed for you by the Synaptic package manager. Windows doesn't offer a comparable program that does point-and-click installations of free GPL licensed software programs from the on-line Ubuntu repositories.

Survey SAYS...
Before you mod this "redundant", at the time of this posting, no one else has actually done the math, just guessed...
For that you get a Media Center PC
Averages around $900, but they use the HP z560 at $1800...
Lifeware automation software from Exceptional Innovation
This one took some work. The closest I could get to a price, $5000, includes hardware. But it puts us at an upper limit, at least.
an Xbox 360
The easiest to find, at $400
IP surveillance cameras
They use a pair of Panasonics (not sure of the model number), around $380 each.
automated light switches
FTA: "five dimmers, five switches, two keypads". Home Depot, $80.
a thermostat
Again, no model number given, but the standard model goes for $270
and installation.
Not really - They want you to have the "hard" parts done yourself, by a privately contracted licensed electrician.
The package costs $15,000.
Total so far, $8310 (not counting your own electrician).
So, not counting needing to hire your own electrician, that puts the cost of their installation at roughly ... $6690.
I've made some pretty damned good wages doing contract work, but over $6k for less than a day's work? Wow, talk about a dream job...
Anyone that wants this system - Hunt me down for contact info. I'll do it for a third less (you pay airfair outside the continental US, and though I know how to work safely with home AC systems , you'll probably still need a licensed electrician to do this legally in most places). -

Re:You don't understandYou don't have to look hard on the left to find... It might surprise, you but the world is a big place, many different viewpoints are represented, however those on the right tend to follow their idealogs more carefully, and often without questioning them, nor conceding their errors. Some are even farther to the 'right' like Sterilizing the mentally retarded (a quick 'fact' from the link: -only 5% of retards go to church on Sunday, mostly because they are too stupid to follow the sermon) Slashdot has a strong Libertarian trend, and the Left is well represented as well, especially when the Europeans and expatriates start chiming in.
Your not the only one whom I've seen tonight who seems to confuse 'left' and 'right' with the notion of a batch of ideas typically represented by a political party. Sure the Republicans generally represent the 'right' and us Democrats the 'left', but Libertarians are typically given the distinction of being 'between' them in the political spectrum. I said in a different comment in this same thread that:
The simple definition of Libertarianism as "Fiscally conservative and socially liberal" And it is overly simple, but I like it, as I have often described myself as such (not simple, but the "Fiscally conservative..", just to be clear). It completely blows my mind that that Republicans have so totally destroyed the budget with tax breaks, and spending, while their minions spread lies, slander, and filth to their eager base. But what amazes me more is that they have managed to make "liberal" and "left" seem like such dirty words, that when people finally start to move away from the Republican side they insist that they aren't going left, but Libertarian, like it is some kinda 'z axis' on the political spectrum. It seems that many have learn their corrupted messages so well, that some people still cling to the belief that 'Fox News channel' and their ilk represents some kind of balance against the 'liberal media'. Compassion and acknowledging society's ills are hardly limited to liberals. The link points to a writer on some random site, who pulls quotes from Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth about Compassionate Conservatism. The statistical analyst in me screams so loudly that without reading the book, I'll wonder out loud: How did he judge if his respondents were 'conservative', did he include 'tithing', and weekly contributions to one's own church?. Churches are considered charitable organizations, and they are, but most of the money goes to fund 'the club house', and not to directly rectify social ills (some even have gyms, schools, and daycare), unlike say, the United Way, who's club houses it's givers do not directly benefit from.

Yes
While I might have time at my computer at work, i don't have time availble while I'm in a meeting at work. Or while I'm walking the halls at work (I have two desks... it is a weird situation). And if I get intercepted by a "customer" for "a few minutes"
... who knows what the real time is? I do, if i'm wearing my watch.
And I'm still taking grad classes. That should be self-explanatory.
I really like mine. -

Wrong, wrong, wrong
There are several things fundamentally wrong with the Economist article. First, correlation does not prove causality--just because the individual discussed in the opening paragraphs performs badly when the tumor grows dosen't prove that he had no choice, merely that the temptation was greater. Second, the article is based on classical mechanics and aside from a minor mention the article essentially ignores all of the very significant ramifications of quantum mechanics. For an excellent but very challenging treatment of this subject read Mind, Matter, and Quantum Mechanics by Henry Stapp (no affiliation, no Amazon kickback). Short explanation: changes in physical state in systems such as the brain require quantum mechanical processes that involve state changes which are free (meaning unpredictable by any currently known physical process).

Re:Looking for a cheaper commercial version
I've got it on my Amazon wish list, but it only uses simpler biometric devices, not EEG. So it's not measuring brain wave activity, but galvanic responses (or something like that).

I put this reply in a different thread, but I think it belongs here as well. There ARE good films out there. Here's a few:

Classics like Cassablanca, Searchers, Robin Hood?
I see people bashing the title selections, but there are a lot of very good movies available that havn't been made in the last ten years (none on Blu-Ray yet, only HD-DVD). I'm not sure everyone actually knows about these.

"Harry Potter and the Mountain of Royalties"
As the series is sometimes referred to by less successful working writers.
But at least Rowling writes her own books. Tom Clancy seems to have given up writing in favor of licensing his name. Latest "Splinter Cell" book: "Tom Clancy" in big letters at top of front cover. "Written by David Michaels" in small type in grey letters on black background at bottom.

Mabel the Swimming MonkeyI think Mabel the Swimming Monkey should be on the list. What SYSADMIN or SYSOP hasn't asked "Did you remember to mount a scratch monkey?" Or, for that matter, had the chance to ask "Can you swim?"
As the owner of two African Grey parrots, I have to give props to Alex's inclusion on the list. The bird developed the use of a "zero-like" concept and abuses grad students. Pepperberg was actually able to document statistically that "Alex is ornery."
Pepperberg is also teaching Alex to surf a parrot Internet and convert visual cues to phonemes which can be assembled by Alex into recognizable words. Pepperberg, always one for rigor, will not say that she is teaching Alex to read.

Re:I give up.
some will say that there is no evidence save the christian bible (and they'd be correct)
I would argue that. There is an interesting book called Evidence That Demands a Verdict that talks about this (among other things). I'll even point you to a skeptic site . He talks about Evidence's list of extra-biblical references to Jesus and attacks their reliability, but even this critic in the beginning of his article says, "Although I agree with McDowell that there was a historical Jesus, ...". -
Re:This isn't a film for geeks.
The Matrix films don't involve much real philosophy beyond the brain in a vat thought experiment. After that, it's not really philosophy, merely, "deep." i.e. it sounds nice, but means nothing.
I suppose it depends on how you define philosophy. I regard the first Matrix film as being very philosophical. It raises some important questions, such as:
What is real?
What is reality?
Is there just one reality?
Is there such a thing as a "perfect copy" (ie - a simulacrum)? If so, is the copy just as good a the original?
I consider those to be heavy-duty philosophical topics. And there's also this book, which is fantastic (and no, the link is not an affiliate link). -
The small guys are paying for this..
A friend of mine from a 50 people shop called me to check what I thought of Amazon web services. I frankly had no opnion since I am not much into web services, but I guess this is because, they were using Google SOAP APIs for themselves.
I am sure they would much rather look at another SOAP oriented service provider than change to AJAX, and I can understand their concern. They never did expect to be desupported (even on a beta product) since it was google they were discussing!
This does make me worry about the other google services I use (Gtalk, GMail etc.) -
Re:bastards
He's not kidding - it's a good book too, I'd highly recommend it if you're doing web programming.

Re:Have you been paying any attention?
Bullshit. There was no Nazi insurgency after WWII. Rumsfeld and Rice made that up.
You're wrong, it did in fact exist. People were being killed and intimidated well after the German surrender. Examples: On June 4, 1945, a police station in Bremen was blown up, killing five Americans and thirty-nine Germans, and injuring many more. The NKVD liquidated 42 Werewolf groups in Saxony in 1946.
Werewolf! - The History of the National Socialist Geurilla Movement 1944-1946 -
Seperation of action and consiquence
The American society seems to encourage people to be stupid.
Dead on. I don't know where it started (I've been told this book is a good read), but there seems to be an ever increasing drive to seperate our actions from their consequences. This pops up, in different forms, in many different areas of society:
-law - the 'cost' to hold someone responsible for their actions is getting higher and higher
-religion - people *love* religions that tell them there's no (or very limited) consequences for their actions
-free-speech - do I need to explain this one....
What's dangerous about this trend is that there is a certain breaking point (don't know if we've hit it yet or not) where freedoms in a society become meaningless as the actions they afford are trumped by the same society's desire to have no consiquences. Freedom implies responsiblity for one's actions. You can pick and choose between those two.
[pre-rebuttle]Don't take this as a doom-and-gloom post. I'm *not* saying everything about society is terrible. I'm just describing a trend that I notice across several aspects of society that doesn't seem to be going anywhere good.[/pre-rebuttle] -
smell is swell
Smell is swell. It's so sad that people, especially adults, don't take time to enjoy it. There is a good reason, of course. We ignore odor because we have no way to quantify or qualify it. If it represents danger (fire, etc) we respond as best we can, but there is no way to express what we experience.
When we experience colors, for instance, we reach back to a lifetime of shared experiences beginning in pre-school. In the company of others we learned and eventually agreed upon what yellow was about. And red, green, etc. There are some delicate shades of color that we haven't shared with others and we feel doubt about what they should be called. We tend to ignore those colors, particularly in conversations, for fear of ridicule. The truly techy among us may refer to them by their Pantone numbers.
We need a language for describing odors that goes beyond "oh that really stinks!". Wine sniffers have tried for generations to do so, but their effort is more about being trendy than creating a standard for comparison.
Without that language, there isn't much incentive to pick out interesting odors in the envirnment. How would you share them with other sensitive people? So, the scents drift by and something in the back of your mind says 'that's nice', but you are too busy talking on your cell phone to notice.
There are some technical and observant books on the subject, such as "The Nose: A Profile of Sex, Beauty, and Survival" by Gabrielle Glaser, but the best way to dramatize the value and potential of recognizing scent is to read the novel "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" by Patrick Suskind. Afterword, the world will never smell the same.

q: If you didn't have a nose, how would you smell?
a: Terrible! -
I was reading a book called
Crystal Fire and they had an interesting anecdote about the beginnings of semi-conductor research. In the late 1930's early 1940s the scientists at Bell labs were experimenting with silicon to see if they could build rectifiers and other electronic components out of it. At the time there really wasn't any theory about how these things might have worked. Some silicon rods showed semi-conductive behavior, some didn't. Finally they found one rod that showed strong semi-conductive behavior. They couldn't figure out what it was that made this rod special until the scientists and machinist who worked on it said that when it was cut or ground it gave off the same smell as one of the old carbide lamps that were used on many automobiles until the late 1920s. One of the chemists realized that what they were smelling was trace amounts of phospine gas, which meant that the rod has phosphorous in it. This was a surprise as the levels of phosphorous in the sample were so small that they didn't show up in a spectrographic analysis, it was the noses of the scientists and machinist that gave them the clue that the proper trace impurities in silicon would enhance the semi-conductive behavior.

Re:Iran is in good company
I have read a number of Chomsky books over the years and I usually check up on everything he says, not because I don't trust him, but because you shouldn't really trust what any one person writes.
Especially Chomsky. A brilliant man.... 50 years ago...when writing about linguistics.
The Anti-Chomsky Reader -
All the Shah's Men
I'm surprised that this book isn't mentioned anywhere in the Wikipedia article's references or bibliography. For anyone with an even passing interest in the parent post's claim that we (the USA that is) put the Shah in power, you'll find the book informative. I wasn't interested when I started the book, but it's well-written and tough to put down.

Re:ZuneAmazon.com.
I also found it at Best Buy for $13.99.
Heh. Yeah, barely under $15. You also didn't seem to object to my other comments. Would you agree that if you heard a song on the radio, a REALLY killer rock song (in my case "Take Me Out"), you would at least check out the album and sample the songs on iTMS before you ordered it? Personally, "Take Me Out" is the only song I like on Franz' launch album, and it's a particularly raspy tune, so hi-fi isn't a big deal. The quality of the mpeg-4's on iTMS is probably more than enough for 50% or more of the songs there. -
Re:Zune"Where can you buy Demon Days for less than $15?"
A quick look on the web found it at Amazon.com. Now, I will admit, I often wait till I end up getting 2 or more CD's at a time so the total is over $25, so I get free shipping...and no tax either.
:-)I also found it at Best Buy for $13.99. So..on this one, yet a bit more than the $12 I listed, but, then again...often, when something comes out new at Best Buy...you'll get it at the $11 or so price range. And that is what I often do....which is where I got the prices I listed. Even at that, I've yet to see a $18 Cd that is often quoted on
/., and isn't some sort of remastered special CD or SACD or something... -

Re:Actually...
Putin has Chechen rebels,
That's why this Litvinenko the radioactive spy poisoning death is so interesting. He wrote a book in which he claimed that Putin instigated the Russian apartment bombings that started the Second Chechen war:
In the book Blowing up Russia: Terror from Within, published with the financial support of Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, Alexander Litvinenko, a former FSB agent, alleged that agents from the FSB co-ordinated the apartment block bombings. On 29 December 2003 Russian authorities confiscated over 5000 copies of the book en route to Moscow from the publisher in Latvia.[18]. Alexander Litvinenko was murdered in London in November 2006.
Not very suprising.
