Re:Maybe it's just me, but...
iPhone 5s "T-Moble Contract Free" prices, are $649, $749, and $849, depending on the amount of storage. See iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5C prices are $549, $649. See iPhone 5c.
Using an average price of $649, and 9 million units sold, that's $5.84 billion in revenue. That doesn't could any accessories (cases, car chargers, etc) or Apple Care sales.
GTA V made a relatively puny $1 billion. You know, chump change.

Re:More secure.
Apple specifically claims their reader IS of the subdermal variety, so I was quite to see this tactic be successful. Hard to believe they would outright lie about that part, as it would be blatant false advertising.

Note that if your Nexus 4 cable breaks you can go and get a standard USB-Micro to USB-A cable at walgreens, most grocery stores, the home depot, most anywhere -- your mom probably has one in her junk drawer. The apple stuff is harder to find, and more expensive.
Also consider the cost to replace the power brick for a macbook pro, with that stupid mag-safe connector. Another proprietary nightmare at $79.
If I want a power brick for a ThinkPad, Amazon's got 'em for $39. And the ThinkPad power brick uses an industry-standard IEC C5 power connector on the input side, if I want to travel abroad with my ThinkPad, all I need to get is a local power cord.
Oh yeah, I can replace the battery in my ThinkPads myself in seconds. The Macbook Pro? Maybe in an hour, if I don't loose any of the screws.

Apples cables are shit and break as well. My wife went through 3 of them in 6 months. She finally got fed up and bought 5 knock offs from some Hong Kong vendor for the price of 1 official cable. She's not the only one.

Re:Wow, they managed to break the idea of a cable!
The idea of a physical cable is that it is simple, robust and as long as the connectors fit, it should (given sane engineering) do what is expected. It is fascinating how they violate that simple and powerful idea in a complex way, just to make a few bucks more. It is also utterly repulsive to any principled engineer.
This was my initial reaction as well... And then I remembered the recent cases of people getting killed, or ending up in a coma due to what is likely to be the use of clone power supplies and cables
Apple has gone to great lengths to mitigate its legal exposure... going as far as offering a discount on an Apple replacement for your third party power supply. For Apple to suddenly ignore the risks of being sued (and to your health and safety) after it can be shown that they could have done something to prevent the use of unauthorised chargers and cables would be stupid of them.
-
Re:To be fair
Because the phone manufacturers who use standard usb connectors are having so much trouble...
Not just phones! My sports watch, camera, Bluetooth headset all charge with USB cables. The same cables attached to any number of different chargers. So what stands out as being a PITA ? All of the Apple devices. I have an adapter for my proprietary Apple 30 pin to Lightning adapter, bought for $3 on eBay. Apple equivalent? $29. My $3 device worked fine until I upgraded to iOS7... Apple is turning into Countrywide Finance under Cook.

Re:Oh no..it's RAID!
Also, if I coud choose particulars on where, and how much, memory is alocated to VM on OSX, I would definitely use an SSD for that...
Presumably by "memory allocated to VM" you mean "swap space".
You don't get to control how much - dynamic_pager will add swap files whenever the kernel tells it to, and the kernel will tell it to do so whenever there's not enough swap space, although the kernel will also tell it to delete swap files if there's enough unused swap space.
You can, however, specify the directory in which they're created, by using the -F flag to dynamic_pager. See the dynamic_pager man page and the
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist property list. (Change it and you'll need to reboot.)I'm not sure whether this would work if the drive in question isn't the drive with the root partition and diskarbitrationd doesn't mount the relevant partition before dynamic_pager starts. You might be able to say "launch this once this directory exists".

Perhaps you should have checked first.
I think when PC sales worldwide drop by large percentages and and Apples dropped by fewer than the overall trend, then that is actually resulting in a larger market share for Apple overall. Just saying
... that is what the actual numbers would seem to indicate.Except actual numbers say no such thing
:). Mac is down 2%; 22% and 5% YonY more by quarter. http://investor.apple.com/ PC sales show a drop of about 10% https://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2544115 ...basically mac sales are if anything dropping faster. Just Saying you should check your figures. -
Re: He is not an expert...
Uhm, the OS doesn't crash when the rendering engine sees that. The app, if it's using the system libraries to render it, may. App-level crash, no obvious vector to leverage the issue to do anything further. It's really more in the realm of annoyance, since apps crash for plenty of other reasons too.
Here's everything fixed up in the 10.8.5 update release last week: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5880

Re:Isn't Apple the minority platform?
No reason to suspect iTunes Radio will be available for every market where there's a local iTunes music store - it's missing in quite a few countries. E.g here in Norway. And there are tight links between iTunes Match and iTunes Radio - there's no ads in the radio if you have iTunes Match.
I think iTunes music store is available in Norway! You can even buy or rent movies too though the inventory is not the same as US store. But it remains to be seen if iRadio free version or ad free with iTunes match will be available in all the countries with iTunes store.

Re:Isn't Apple the minority platform?
Except Pandora is pretty much US only, and even though Spotify is available in about 3 dozen countries or so, still doesn't have a user base of more than 20 million. I suspect iTunes Radio will be available for every market where there's a local iTunes music store. A much much much bigger possible market. Will Pandora survive? Probably, though it will probably lose listeners. Spotify may not. In either case, I would think that iTunes radio would have a much bigger userbase than both combined.

Re:64-bit Proc != 64-bit OS
I haven't seen any references anywhere about a 64-bit iOS
You haven't been looking in the right places (although "built specifically for 64bit architecture" probably lies somewhere between hyperbole and bullshit, given that it runs Just Fine on 32-bit machines).
more likely this has been done so when Apple releases a 64-bit version of iOS in 2-3 years
Make that "in 4 to 5 days" instead.

Re:Android is finished.
Did you read the OP? They state "OS X was designed from the GROUND UP to be 64 bit." I'm simply indicating this is untrue.
The default kernel for compatibility reasons is 32 bit. Any version of OS X before this was ONLY 32 BIT (at least according to Apple) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773
Mac OS X v10.6 and later include a 64-bit kernel. On hardware that supports the 64-bit kernel, you can choose whether to start up (boot) your Mac using the 64-bit kernel or the earlier 32-bit kernel. -

Re:IMHO
I agree that this is going to be hard to make work in a practical way. But, Apple's iPod Nano is almost the right size already and has a lot of iOS functionality built into it (plus a radio).
I'm not sure if the "smart watch" has a place in today's world, but most companies that are trying to produce one aren't "smart" when it comes to this type of product. Maybe in 5 years when the tech & battery life is ready to be crammed into that small a space.
Keep in mind that we all refer back to when XYZ company came out with a XYZ product long before Apple tried to make it "cool" (even the Newton was too soon for the tech it needed). We're at that point with smart watches. In a few years we'll be decrying Apple for selling them to the masses and claiming XYZ company did it first. Wash, rince, repeat.

Parallels is NOT sold in the AppStore. It's installed via a custom stand-alone installer.
You do realize that's not the App store, but Apple's store where they ship you a box with the software?
-
Re:Macintosh's ease of use
Funny enough, a software like Parallels Desktop needs such low-level access to the system that it would most certainly be prohibited from being approved into the Mac App Store.
You're absolutely right. This link doesn't go to the approved and ready for download link of the software in the app store.
Apple is pretty strict about what kind of low-level access its App Store apps are allowed and where they can install their stuff.
So they wouldn't, say, approve malware then...
do not want to say that the walled garden is flawless or does not have some significant problems, but your guess is really simply wrong in this case.

Re:Link Baiting This?
Um , no they dont and no the are not. . They subcontract all of the manufacturing of all their products to Chinese companies. Apple doesn't build squat. Here from there own web site:
http://www.apple.com/supplierresponsibility/our-suppliers.html
And from their latest Form 10-Q:
Long-Term Supply Agreements
The Company has entered into long-term agreements to secure the supply of certain inventory components. Under certain of these agreements, which expire between 2013 and 2022, the Company has made prepayments for the future purchase of inventory components and has acquired capital equipment to use in the manufacturing of such components.so they do appear to be investing some amount of money in manufacturing infrastructure, apparently by buying it themselves for use by their subcontractors.

Re:Link Baiting This?
And if you forget the "iPhone charging cable" on the go, you can't borrow a standard USB cable which are pretty ubiquitous to recharge your phone, you need to find someone that has the proprietary cable.
And you can't find an iPhone cable at almost any convenience store?
Can the iPhone now play Flac and OGG files and other open source formats without transcoding?
And neither can "Android". The only required audio codecs for an Android distribution are MP3 and AAC, Some manufacturers may include support for other formats.
Luckily, you can buy an app.
-
Re:Link Baiting This?
And if you forget the "iPhone charging cable" on the go, you can't borrow a standard USB cable which are pretty ubiquitous to recharge your phone, you need to find someone that has the proprietary cable.
Right, because nobody else in the world owns an iPhone or iPad and you can't buy third-party Apple charge cables at the local BuyMore. Yeah, that was true for a few months after Apple switched from the old iPod connector to the new, smaller connector.
Can the iPhone now play Flac and OGG files and other open source formats without transcoding?
Well, there's this... or you can just transcode everything to Apple Lossless (which is open source now, and since it is lossless, transcoding is no big deal).
But Apple prefers to force their users to use their proprietary formats.
Except that iTunes and iOS have always supported the ubiquitous
.mp3, and the default AAC may not be Free but it isn't proprietary either (and Apple dropped audio DRM long ago). It's nice that .ogg is properly Free (until some troll fishes around under their bridge and finds a patent to assert against it) but the reality is that 99% of punters don't give a fig.For a company that prides itself on providing a good user experience, this behavior is clearly putting Apple's desires ahead of their users.
Ha! A good user experience is plugging your device into your computer and having all your music, videos, playists and photos sync reliably. iTunes does that. Android, however, gives you a wide choice of alternative programs that almost do some of those things, downhill and with a following wind. NB: I have and use both Android and iOS devices - I've tried.
How well does that work on Windows? From what I've heard, that experience is significantly degraded.
Remind me how you sync your Android phone with email, calendars and contacts on Windows - other than using Gmail or a MS Exchange server (which both work with iOS, too).
I agree, I wouldn't call the iOS interface clumsy, but it is restrictive as hell. On my Android phone, I have the top news stories, my stocks, the weather, and my calendar all on home screens that I scroll through with a simple swipe that lets me put my finger on the pulse of all that I care about with a few quick swipes.
I think Apple do need to up their game here. The "spartan" functionality of iOS (no user app multitasking, no widgets) made sense for a few years after the iPhone was released - I had what you might call a "second generation" Android phone - a HTC hero - and it was all to easy to bring it to its knees by loading up too many widgets, and it did seem to need a "task killer" to stop background tasks piling up. However, todays smartphones (I have a Galaxy Note 2) are vastly more powerful and can deal with multiple widgets, animated wallpapers and background processes until the cows come home. Apple should re-visit the idea of widgets (except they'd be accused of ripping off Android).
rather than shortcuts to all my apps cluttering up my home screen with icons I rarely use.
You can drag apps between screens, and create groups, on iOS, you know...

Emulators and interpreted-code-players are still not allowed. Thanks a bunch, iOverlords.
That's simply not true. There are plenty of emulators and interpreters on the App Store. Provided that the "ROMS" or other emulated code comes from the App Store. And that could be via inclusion with the original download, or via in app purchases.

Re:Apple press release
Yes, it was in snow leopard. It is still cutting edge, as no other OS has anything similar throughout the OS.
GCD might be cutting-edge, but it does not itself make Mavericks a cutting-edge version of OS X, given that it dates back to Snow Leopard, and it doesn't belong in a list whose other members are features new in Mavericks. In the list "interrupt coalescing, memory compression, grand central dispatch, app nap.", at least one of these things is not like the others, as the saying goes, and, if by "interrupt coalescing" you mean "timer coalescing", exactly one of those things is not like the others.
(As for "interrupt coalescing", I have no reason to believe that, for example, jerbun's comment in this Gizmodo story:
My best guess is that they are essentially doing this:
Interrupt Coalescing
This taken from the "Time Coalescing" statement from which I am making the assumption that they really mean "Interrupt Coalescing."
The basic idea is that instead of waking up the processor every single time some sort of I/O needs to be done by a peripheral, they let some of them wait a little longer. Not all I/O is latency dependent, and as such the wake-up time can be postponed. This means that a series of interrupts can be handled all at once, and then the processor can go back to sleep.More in depth explanation:
Anandtech on Haswell 6/10/13 5:21pmis a good guess.
I'm more inclined to go with Apple's own description of it in their "OS X Mavericks Core Technologies Overview" document, which indicates that it shifts the times of events scheduled to happen sufficiently close together in time so that, instead of happening at a time as close as possible to the scheduled time, they happen at times further from their scheduled time in a fashion that allows more of them to be handled within one timer-based wakeup. One consequence of this might be that fewer timer interrupts occur (as I remember, XNU was made tickless at least as far back as Lion, so there aren't periodic timer interrupts), but that particular bit of interrupt coalescing - it only concerns timer interrupts - isn't the main goal, and is arguably not a goal at all, just a side-effect of reducing the number of timer-based wakeups from sleep.)
