Re:One hand? Pfft! How about one finger?
There are morse characters for punctuation. I don't know most of them, just the common ones. There are also language-specific characters for Cyrillic, and some oriental languages as well. So coming up with codes isn't the issue. The data rate isn't outstanding. Experts go 30 to 35 word per minute or so. I knew one old cigar-chomping sparks who first went to sea in a WW II Liberty Ship, who claimed "49 1/2" words per minute. I watched him operate, too, with a WW II era bug, beer and ash-tray handy -- he could move the traffic, though. I think chording is always going to beat keying if implemented correctly.
BTW -- a bit off topic, but if there are any other CW ops out there that haven't read this piece by Hans Brokab, do it. Put down your drinks to protect your keyboards. You have been warned. http://mikea.ath.cx/QRQ-QRV.html

Browsing slashdot with lynx
Slashdot disrupted again my habits of reading this site with this redesign. You can't even get all the slashdot stories of a single day from the front page without clicking 3-4 times. I have solved this problem for now by using a script in crontab which grabs several pages of news once a day and reformats them to plain HTML. (look here if you want to do the same http://uglyduck.ath.cx/slashdot/). You can then open this minimalistic HTML file in any browser and read comments from there.
Unfortunatelly there is absolutely no way to get more than 50 comments from a story unless you log in. All the 'commentlimit' 'bytelimit' 'startat' parameters are ignored in D1 mode without a login (logins and cookies in lynx are just annoying). You may get the first 50 comments by passing the few recognized parameters like this: comments.pl?sid=nnnnnn&threshold=1&commentsort=0&mode=flat&no_d2=1&pid=0
I'll see how I can live with this 50 comments limit in the future (because there's no way I'll login every time I want to read
/.) and if I find it unbearable I'll just give up on slashdot. -
Re:Offtopic but related
It's a little baroque, but i've had really good success with GLC ( http://nullkey.ath.cx/projects/glc/ ). It only works with OpenGL games though, so non-GL based 2D games won't work with it.
I love GLC! Here's a tutorial of it that I found, for those of you wanting to try it: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/glc.html.
And a video I made with it a little while ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNNY6cGNpgc

Re:THIS is a summary?
...being relatively happy with my Firefox/Adblock/Noscript bubble of sanity...
You might want to look at the BetterPrivacy Add-on as well as the above. It is a whitelist based manager of Flash cookies. Which are used by a surprising number of sites that don't use Flash in any obvious way, including Gmail.com (whose Flash cookie I allow).
BetterPrivacy for Firefox. The developer's site, with links to reviews of BetterPrivacy in half a dozen big name magazines.

Re:Debian?
You have it the other way around. Debian is ahead of ubuntu. You are probably referring to debian-stable, which is mainly for servers. I have been using debian-testing for about 4 years now. I have never had to do any kind of update cycle/reinstall. It is always up to date. http://christi.ath.cx/ubuntu_vs_debian.html

Forecast Fox could be made to work here http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1876795&sid=20e6ed03a165322bb459cf6a8a180d0d and BetterPrivacy's author has a developer build (1.47.5dev) that works under 4.0beta at http://netticat.ath.cx/Install The BetterPrivacy install crashed my machine (and I run as a limited user). After the restart, the add-on manager showed it installed correctly. I clicked on install multiple times due to me blocking the website from installing add-ons, and the add-on manager didn't allow me to remove extensions (duplicated) before the restart.

Intel Atom
Here is what I have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121383
2gb ram
Plus 2 hard drives in raid 1.
What does it all do? Here's what:
Debian lenny amd64 as the base xen dom0
Debian lenny i686 in domU as a gateway/router running shorewall, squid, dansguardian, psad
Debian lenny i686 in domU as web, smtp, imap, torrent, amule, and various perl web bots, server.
Like I said all of this through xen like here: http://www.shorewall.net/XenMyWay.html
The box with one hard drive drew 38 watts idle and 44 max. I haven't measured it since I added another hd.
Note that the psu on the box is very old and inefficient. I am sure a newer one would lower the power draw 5-10watts

Google Services phishing link
This might be related, seems you can generate emails that appear to come from Google's own mail servers by altering a regular old URL. From there it's a short step to include a phishing site in the body of the email asking the user to verify his account details, or whatever. Maybe other webmail services have similar links.
I saw the Hotmail version of this phishing mail yesterday, it looks like it comes from an @live.ca address and asks the receiver to verify his account details at a link included in the email. The link is disguised to look like a valid mail.live.com link, but of course it goes to a phishing site instead. -

Re:All i can say is
BETTER PRIVACY PLUGIN.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6623
100% compatible with Firefox 3.5*
Please do not ask me about missing updates here, read FAQ at the bottom of this page.Better Privacy serves to protect against not deletable longterm cookies, a new generation of 'Super-Cookie', which silently conquered the internet. This new cookie generation offers unlimited user tracking to industry and market research. Concerning privacy Flash- and DOM Storage objects are most critical.
This addon was made to make users aware of those hidden, never expiring objects and to offer an easy way to get rid of them - since browsers are unable to do that for you.Flash-cookies (Local Shared Objects, LSO) are pieces of information placed on your computer by a Flash plugin. Those Super-Cookies are placed in central system folders and so protected from deletion. They are frequently used like standard browser cookies. Although their thread potential is much higher as of conventional cookies, only few users began to take notice of them. It is of frequent occurrence that -after a time- hundreds of those Flash-cookies reside in special folders. And they won't be deleted - never.
BetterPrivacy can stop them, . by allowing to silently remove those objects on every browser exit. So this extension becomes sort of "install and forget add-on". Usually automatic deletion is safe (no negative impact on your browsing), especially if the deletion timer is activated. The timer can delay automatic deletion for new or modified Flash-cookies which might be in use. It also allows to delete those objects immediately if desired.
With BetterPrivacy it is possible to review, protect or delete new Flash-cookies individually. Users who wish to to manage all cookies manually can disable the automatic functions. BetterPrivacy also protects against 'DOM Storage' longterm tracking, a browser feature which has been granted by the major browser manufactures.
Some flash LSO-cookie properties in short...
they are never expiring - staying on your computer for an unlimited time.
by default they offer a storage of 100 KB (compare: Usual cookies 4 KB).
browsers are not aware of those cookies, LSO's usually cannot be removed by browsers.
via Flash they can access and store highly specific personal and technical information (system, user name, files,...).
ability to send the stored information to the appropriate server, without user's permission.
flash applications do not need to be visible
there is no easy way to tell which flash-cookie sites are tracking you.
shared folders allow cross-browser tracking, LSO's work in every flash-enabled application
the company doesn't provide a user-friendly way to manage LSO's, in fact it's incredible cumbersome.
many domains and tracking companies make extensive use of flash-cookies.
These cookies are not harmless.
IMPORTANT
IF YOU PERMIT DELETION OF LSO's,
THEN COOKIE-STORED INFORMATION LIKE
GAME SETTINGS OR LOGIN DATA (YAHOO SEAL)
MIGHT BE LOST! MAKE SURE THAT YOU EXCLUDED
IMPORTANT COOKIES FROM DELETION (SEE FAQ)Frequently asked questions (FAQ):

Re:All i can say is
I just started using bp last week and here is something important. The version on the Firefox addon site is not the latest. I got 1.41 at
http://netticat.ath.cx/BetterPrivacy/BetterPrivacy.htm
because it added a bit of functionality. Specifically in the way it treats DOM storage.
DOM storage is not flash cookies (LSOs), it is a separate way sites can store data on your computer I had not heard about. The old version could only disable DS, but now BP can now treat DS like LSOs so it stays on but the data gets deleted on FF shutdown. Some sites like cnn video need DS turned on.
Also I set it to delete the default LSO. That one stores a list of every flash site you visit. Even if you turn Flash local storage completely off using:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html
you will see a list of visited sites on the last tab on that control. Deleting the default cookie gets rid of that list.

The die photos show it pretty clearly...
At first glance, the Xbox CPU doesn't really resemble Cell, but if you just compare Cell's PPE to one of Xenon's three cores the similarity is striking: Xenon, Cell

Re:I always look forward to new Fedora Core's
If you want (in my opinion), the best, certainly one of the most configurable, KDE 4.x experience out there, try KDEmod. Currently it's at version 4.1.3, and includes some backports from the 4.2 branch as well (finally, panel auto-hiding for example). Even better, it runs on a very flexible and fast distribution, that's either i686 or x86-64 optimized, has a really fast package manager, uses precompiled packages by default but makes compiling packages with custom options very trivial and is as light (or heavy) as you want it to be. Granted, it doesn't offer as much hand holding for newcomers as Ubuntu or Fedora, but the community documentation is generally very good. Check out the wiki - if the installation instructions don't seem too intimidating I suggest you give it a go. Once you have a base Arch system up and running, installing KDEmod very easy.

Re:Well "Works With Linux" is a feature to me
Ubuntu and derivatives are bloated slow crap http://christi.ath.cx/ubuntu_vs_debian.html You can't tell me that a 500mb minimum install of debian with kde/gnome/what ever is going to be slow. I agree, a fresh install of xp with all services turned off is pretty perky. But come back in 6 months (if it is even still booting) and see how perky it is. Plus you can't buy XP any more. Which means you probably installed a highly illegal copy on that box. So here, stick some vista on it and blow it out your ass.

Re:915x915um^2
That die isn't particularly small - 1mm by 1mm. Plenty of existing chips have dies that size, but they're just packaged in larger packages to space out the pins. This picture shows a die (about 3mm*3mm) and the remains of its package so you have an idea of how small a die can be, even in a large package.

Re:GTK-Qt
You can always install a Tango theme in KDE if you don't like their awful default icons. It's what my default KDE setup does actually. I'll agree, the default KDE theming (at least in KDE3) is godawful, but once you customize it with actually attractive alternatives, I find it's actually much more attractive than GNOME (at least for me, I think it's a product of my liking the way QT lays stuff out moreso than GTK). As for the pedigree of these themes, I believe they're both independently derived from Bluecurve.

Debian Rules!
I have always been disappointed in ubuntu. Way too much crap thrown together that I don't need and I hate release schedules. I have been running debian-testing for a couple of years. It is always up to date, no need to do wacky reinstalls every 6 months. I always laugh at the ubuntu fan boys ranting about how they just upgraded to the latest release and about how they are up to date now. Even the latest release is several months behind debian-testing and I didn't have to anything except "aptitude upgrade" to get it. BAM!

Re:To compare with GNOME...Back during the days of Breezy Badger, I made the same decision. I stuck with it through Edgy Eft, but then I found KDE to be increasingly unusable. (K)Ubuntu has been known to give KDE a bad name. I suggest you try another distribution - if KDE is what you're after, and you want a desktop-oriented distribution, PCLinuxOS might be a good choice. OTOH, if you like a _fast_ desktop and KDE with only the components you need, Arch and KDEmod is a combination that is hard to beat.

well, there are now raw log files which you surely cannot argue are not "logs" of the channel:

wikipedia opposes openness and transparency
One of their prominent editors, Raul654 aka Mark Pellegrini, has threatened to ban anyone who logs discussions in #wikipedia. Mark has refused to comment on this blatantly hypocritical policy or address repeated questions directed towards him on this issue.
In protect of this egregious behavior, I have opened up a #wikipedia logger page in open defiance of this policy. I have dared him to ban me but he has yet to identify the client logging. -
Re:I noticed this a while ago
It doesn't really say much about your seriousness as a leader or efficacy, for that matter, when you are unable or unwilling to ban someone who is doing the very exact activity you said would result in a ban:
http://raul654sucks.ath.cx/wikipedia.html
I find that you are typical of the effeminate leadership that permeates Wikipedia and receive much joy out of flaunting your threats. -
Re:New OS has old problemsThe new start bar with search is especially cool... you no longer have to go searching for your apps. Never seen anything like it in a Linux distro. Well there is Kickoff, but although it is available in the KDE version of my choice, I don't use it because it uses Beagle, which IMHO blows. Katapult is a nice alternative.
