There is an inherent danger in using Tobler's First Law in a communications context. It's focus is on the impact of similar experiences as felt by the individual. We "empathize" with an injustice 16,000 miles away. We "experience" one 6 miles away.

The danger is when one group believes they have a "better perspective" because of location. If you are having a conversation with a person about Iraq and they tell you they are from Pakistan or the United States does it influence how you interpret what they say? Should it? Do you provide their ideas with stronger support if they are closer to you or the event?

As the people of Iraq are closest to Saddam, they are a better judge of the current US/Iraq situation. Equally so, because Americans are closest to their government, they are a better judge of what is right. Now with Americans in Iraq who is a better judge?

While GeoTagging is becoming more popular, it carries a prejudice. You are no longer expressing your opinion you are expressing your "French" opinion or your "German" opinion. Your facts are "Swiss" facts, or "American" facts. Your beliefs are "South African" beliefs or "Australian" beliefs.

There may be value in putting context around what you state, however it may serve just as well to cloud the message by providing context before the message. And that may lead to the question of what is the Truth ?

I have a CMG infinity with red led. It's a small, sturdy metal light that takes one AA battery and gives 40 hours of full brightness light, then another 30 or so of slowly dimming light. I use mine for general use and astronomy, and love it. It can take a beating, runs all year of heavy use on like a 4 pack of AA batteries. For working around the house, pearing into dark corners, etc, I use an Opalec NewBeam drop in for my MiniMag. It is voltage regulated, so you get 10 hours of constant brightness, and it has a low a battery indicator LED. It is driven with 3 bright white LEDs. Nice, tight focused beam. Not quite as bright as the Maglight with the incadescent bulb and fresh batteries, but perfectly usable. And not too bright to annoying when using it to read in the dark, work up close to yuor face, etc.

For backpacking, I use a Black Diamond Moonlight headlamp, with 4 LEDs. Runs on 4AAAs, supposed to go for 70 hours, and is as bright as the NewBeam.

I like both very much. Probably THE best place for information like this on the web is Candle Power Forums, and the LED Museum. At CPF you'll find all sorts of user experiences with most everything out there, and some home grown "pill" style ultra bright MagLight dropins. These are guys who collet $100+ flashlights! And LED Museum has a ton of technical information and reviews.

Ok 2 not so easy ways to do it...

serial port method.
Get a pic microcontroler with built in serial port and a DtoA converter. Connect each (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green) to its own individual DtoA output (with a current limit resisor picked so 5V results in full led brightness ((5V-VfLED)/(IledCONT)= R). next hook your serial port to the pic via a RS232 to TTL converter (MAX232 is a good choice). write some simple code to read 3 values from the serial port and dump them to the DtoA reg (too long to post here send me Email for help or look at the ap notes on microchips web sight) and tada you have a serial controled glowing ball....

build a niode and hook the led to that. I am currently working on new commands to allow the DtoA converter to work for a use similar to this (controling fiber optic lights in celing tiles). A lot more work but you would be able to control it from anywhere in the world that can send UDP trafic to it.

If a politician wins by garnering 55% of the votes these politicians then say they have a mandate. They are often used in condition monitoring applications to detect faults in cases where the particular fault has never been seen before. The system's learn what is a working model and then shout when something falls outside those boundaries. Have a look at self organising maps and novelty detection in general
