use GOGO instead
GOGO is based on LAME, and optimized in assembler (x86) for encoding and using SMP, even on my old P166 i have a x2 ratio, it means encoding a 6 minutes song take 3 minutes, not bad. BTW it exists for Linux, BeOS, OS/2, and Windows. You can get it here

Re:Correcting Myself (Re: Pegasus Mail)
Pardon: Are you saying that "Pegasus Mail" was also named or commonly known by the term 'pmail'? If so, then yeah, they had a right to ask him to change the name.[ NH goes away to do some homework after the fact... so he can provide a definitive clear explanation of the circumstances of this obscure topic.. like someone should have done in the beginning instead of rambling on as though everyone in the planet knows the details about what is being talked about
:) ]Ok, I've easily found Scott Bender's pmail, and it looks like he's being forced to change his package name as well. The pmail domain is owned by David Harris and his free Pegasus Mail, which he claims was first released in 1990. David's site doesn't refer to Pegasus Mail by the term pmail, other than pmail being in the name of the downloadable files, and other than having the domain name.
However at some other scattered sites where Pegasus Mail is mentioned, the term pmail is used to refer to it.
Hmmmmm. Looks like there is another commercial product called pmail, over here. Not a full e-mail client. But e-mail related.
Here is another pmail package, from Be.com, developed by a Dennis Ryan.
Then there is Personal Mail (pmail.net), which turns up in my search. (Goofballs, if I have javascript turned off I get a page of white text on a white background.)
None the less, it is clear that the users of Pegasus Mail do refer to it by the name 'pmail'. This was not adequately clear in any of the other messages.
Personally I can easily see how others could 'miss' pmail, aka Pegasus Mail, in a search for 'prior use'. I've never heard of it before, and I've been on the net since 1992. If I did a search for pmail and found what I found above, I would have presumed that pmail was a commonly used name without a firm claim on it. Especially since the official Pegasus Mail pages do not refer to itself as pmail. And 95% of the sites that refered to Pegasus Mail as pmail were in a foreign language, if I hadn't paid close attention to them, I might have missed the connection between Pegasus Mail and pmail all together.
Cheers

dual monitor is as old as PC...
back in 1990, i had a 386SX16, and 2 video cards, one vga 256k, and one hercules (that i replaced with a CGA one) and two monitors, and i used Turbo Debuguer with the 2 displays, pretty cool, my app running on the vga, and the debuguer on the hercules
:)
it still work i think, the point is to have a videocard buffer on B800, and one on B000 iirc which is the B&W one, so there's no overlap, even on bios, one on C000 and the others on i don't remember.

Re:Macintosh computer specs are online. From an article by Jean-Louis Gasse' on Be's website..
The same can't be said of BeOS, and I can see the logic in Apple's decision not to help us with access to chipset technical data for a G3/G4 BeOS port.
Apple's closed hardware is preventing Be from moving to the new PPC hardware. Gasse' says as much. Some have suggested that we look into the Linux sources for such data. Perhaps, but I see little reason to open ourselves to possible accusations of reverse-engineering. We're welcome on x-86 hardware, we're not welcome on Apple G3/G4. We respect the logic and that settles it for us.
...and it's still sad :)

official answer from Be Inc.
Here's the official word on the BeNews story on dropping BeOS:
"Earlier today, a German website ran an article claiming that Be was
planning on halting BeOS development work. This is a mistaken
interpretation of our remarks on the subject. As we have stated publicly, Be
is continuing to develop and release new versions of BeOS, which serves as the
development environment for BeIA, our software platform for Internet
appliances. We have made no change to this strategy. We appreciate the
interest the Be community continues to show in BeOS."

you people Obviously dont know what this bord is.
Ok First off this mother board is ment to be mounted in a backplane chassis for industrial application such as motion control for CNC machines (but usually FANUC controlers are used) or robotics setups, as well as data aquisition. Look in the back of any Design News magazine and youll see all of thoes cards that are supposed to be shoved into the backplanes. As far as being used in servers, they were never ment for such use. They are basicly for industrial embedded systems running QNX perhaps to run a machine shop or plant. Another thing that simply isnt possible to do with these bords it to issert them into other computers as an upgrade or put multiple cards in one unit for sort of super computer because youll just fry the card and computer. The card is a mother board and can you take the pci bus of one mother board and lets say pulg it directly into anothers? That would easily spell disaster. If you want to see other good industrial and embedded computers and solid state disks go here to Advantech , they have a great line of sold state disks that range from 3.5" solid state IDE disks to a little 32MB solid disk that plugs right into the motherboards ide port and just sticks out about an inch from the connector. great for building embedded Linux, BeIA , or QNX devices. Hey anyone here ever think of a pocket sized linux server check out this Advantech device
:) Holds 144MB flash cards for bootstrap has 10/100 ethernet, 32 MB ram and 4MB vga and ide in a 2.5 hdd form factor. Definaly some awesome linux potential as a micro server that can whoop ass! -
Does anyone else see the irony?
What about BeOS on G3/G4 systems? I guess PowerPC is not as open to everyone as Linux is...

Full StoryThe following is basically the exact text of the story, along with the basic markup used.
This belongs in the "probably unintentional, but egg on their face" department.
BeOS has a C library called libroot.so . This library contains a number of components under the GNU LGPL license, and Be is distributing the source code for these components in their FTP archive. They also have some proprietary components in that library, which they distribute in object form. It looks as if Be is making an honest effort to comply with the LGPL license.
Bruno Haible tipped me off that my Electric Fence program, a malloc() debugging tool, is also part of Be's libroot.so . Electric Fence is under the GPL, not the LGPL. That license would not allow it to be part of a library with proprietary components, although Be could distribute it in a separate library.
It turns out that not only is Electric Fence in Be's libroot.so, but Be is distributing it in object-code form, without source, as if it were one of their proprietary components. Of course this is also against the license. The archive that contains it is here on their FTP site. My files extract from that archive into src/kit/malloc/obj.i586.dyn/{ef_malloc.o,ef_page.
o ,ef_print.o,efence.o}I'm assuming this is an honest mistake by one of their engineers, and will be quickly fixed. It's an example of why it is important to keep track of where your software came from and what license it's under, and read the license when you use somebody else's code.
Thanks
Bruce

free software are good if you can reuse some code
I remember making a project back in 1991, under X-window, using athena widget, in 1991 believe me, making X11 application was hard! i found a proggy which was using X11 and i reused some of the code to open windows, using cascading menus, and so on. Of course before doing this, i emailed the author, and he said "yes fell free to reuse my code", what i did. I have no idea what was the "license" for the software, but mine was a commercial one, and the guy never asked me to release all my source code or whatever.
all this just to say that what i like in free software, is when you can reuse the code freely.
sometimes i am confused with all the license scheme around the worodl, gnu, apache, bsd, etc. maybe i'm talking about public domain?
for me a free software is a free software with free code that people can reuse, giving credit for the part in their source, but i don't care if they sell their product and there's 100 lines of code from one of my freeware.

even a tiny wormhole is useful
for communication! if the wormhole is atomic-size, photons that are smaller than an atom, can pass thru the wormhole. We know how to make coherent light (laser), just aim right at the center of the wormhole (once one is discovered) and the laser will reappear at the other side. Using a "blinking" laser we could use some kind of morse to communicate with someone on the other side of the wormhole.

it's exactly the same thing under BeOS... 3D accelerated openGL works well with voodoo2/3/banshee, but for Nvidia, there's even no GeForce 2D driver for the moment!

I wore the wrong t-shirtI wore the wrong shirt for my photo in the Metro article.
I wore my BeOS Master's Award polo shirt that I won (honorable mention) for porting Spellswell from MacOS to the BeOS
(It uses a protocol called Word Services that links word processors and email clients to spellers and other text services (including text encryption); the award was as much for bringing Word Services to the BeOS as for Spellswell itself. I plan to do the same for Linux soon, possibly through the CORBA techniques they use in Gnome - http://www.gnome.org seems to be down or I'd link to the relevant page there.)
I'm pretty active in the Be developer community.
I'm also pretty critical of Be because of their complete lack of any sense as far as managing the business and handling developer relations and I have no qualms about making my views known to them and other developers, both in public and in private discussions.
I've always been a shy and quiet person but there's something about living through experiences such as I've had that makes such things as speaking up in public about mere work matters pretty easy in comparison.
Remember my sig: Tilting at Windmills for a Better Tomorrow. Words I live by.
I thought it would provoke quite a lively response to post the link to the Metro article to BeUserTalk and BeDevTalk. I got a couple private responses and one public one. I was very glad to get the responses I did get though.
On the other hand, I submitted this article to Slashdot but figured it wouldn't get posted, considering the dozens of articles I've submitted that I think were more directly relevant to open source programming, privacy, free speech, encryption and so on, but this is the one that gets on.
And my manic depression page, which grew to get 3000 hits last month (it's linked from some bipolar sites and the bipolar category on Yahoo), has gotten 4800 hits in ten hours.
No, I should have worn my Release Your Inner Nerd t-shirt that I bought from the Slashdot booth at the Linuxworld Expo in San Jose a while back.
(Wore it shopping for wedding supplies with my fiance the other day
:-) ).

to Be or not to Be
Now that code is free speech, it seems that Apple has spoken the specifications for the Mac hardware. Inside the Darwin source code is the information necessary to write an operating system kernel that runs on an iMac or a G4 or the iBook ("I said make it look like a Compaq®, not a compact!"); let's see what will come to Be soon.
-----------------------------------------Why do
/.ers like BeOS, a closed-source OS?- /. is News for Nerds, not News for Free Software Advocates.
- It's freebeerware.
- It comes with a compiler (in the first zip you download after the partition zip). Nerds like compilers.
- It's not Windows. (Think eroding M$'s market share.)

Re:BeOS for Macintosh
First, Be started running on PowerPC hardware. The original BeBoxes had dual PPC 603 processors and generally looked really wicked. You can see one at http://www-classic.be.com/p roducts/bebox/dual603ds.html (the LEDs in front show relative processor activity. Very neat.)
Now what I'm wondering is why Be didn't make a personal release of PR5 available for the MacOS. So they can't get it to boot from an image, forcing you to install it on a separate partition---SO??? That's the way all the other PR releases have been and, frankly, I don't see any reason to not support the Mac seeing as there is a version of PR5 available for sale. And you can't argue 'support costs' because most people who install Be tend to know what the hell they're doing with their machines.

Not quite. The kernel is written in C.

> with beautifully clean and simple APIs.
Yes, it really puts the Linux and Windows API to shame. Badly.
You also forgot BeOS is EXTREMELY FAST. :)
BeOS is a great example of what happens when you start over and design a well thought OS instead of just hacking things together.

Re:BeOS on slashdot
Hmm, you might want to brush up on your knowledge of BeOS. Try this if you're in a hurry.
Media Kit is particularly excellent. It's better designed than Quicktime but not as broad or feature-rich.
The whole OS is C++ based with beautifully clean and simple APIs. It's pervasively multithreaded, from the file system to graphics and IO.
This really is an awesome OS. Too bad there's not enough room for it in the market today. -

Where to get drivers for BeOSThe BeOS comes bundled with a limited number of drivers, but there are some third party drivers available.
I thought there was a 3c509 driver available but a quick search didn't find it. I suggest you ask on BeUserTalk.
