Perhaps you should understand the level of hate people had for Japan at the time, these were not nice guys selling you MP3 players or video games, they were raised in a culture of might has all right. Learn your history, then comment about why we dropped the second bomb. Both of those cities were manufacturing for the Rising Sun War machine. -
Re:Nudity vs. ViolenceThe mesh was already ingame. Bethesda already had female character models with breasts along with textures for nude skin.
Taken from the description of the mod that possibly caused the ESRB to review their rating for Oblivion:
"In the process of trying to create a nude skin for Oblivion, I found Bethesda had already done all the work for me. They just covered it up with underwear afterwards. (At least in my version -- I know sometimes European versions are different, as those cultures accept the human body better.)"

Oh, and
If you search for "square massacre" you get this lovely image, and then there's this one you get in a search for "china tank".

It's that kids toy.
You know the one, you give it to a toddler and then pull the switch out and then stand back as it shakes the snot out of them as they desperately try to hold on. Like this.Sera

Re:Well...
OK - you point to the "first mouse" -- something cobbled together from bits of wood, wheels, and wires about 1963. Obviously a test device to see if the idea even works -- why add more buttons if you don't even know the wheels will work (I have no evidence this is how it went, but for testing out an idea, I wouldn't invest any more time than absolutely necessary to see if it will work at all).
So after Engelbert thinks about what a mouse should do a bit, he comes up with this (scroll down for pic). The famous 1968 demo was with a three button mouse. Some parts of that demo are absolutely fabulous. For example, there is a segment showing a collaborator appear on the screen, webcam style, and the two people work together on a single document, all the while hearing and seeing each other. There is an excerpt from the presentation in Alan Kay's talk. When I watch this, I can't help but wonder why the heck computers haven't really advanced in UI terms in the last 30 years. Ok processing power yada yada -- but when I watched this the first time, I felt like nothing had changed except for the addition of color, better refresh rates, and smoother mousing. Those are just tweaks, not innovation.
Anyway, the very first test device mouse had only one button. Thank goodness it has advanced and evolved. -
you're not looking in the right places, dude
troll! The first cite is just a splash page, the second doesn't have ANY history of Web servers, and the third is a rather self-serving history from CERN.

Re:I still don't understand why they don't
Stilts would help you defend against a giant bumble ball exactly how? (link goes to the best explaination and reverse engineering of the Bumble Ball that I've ever seen). Seems to me even a tiny bumble ball could create havoc in an army on stilts or poles.....

Genetic Algorithm Poetry? or just Dadaism?
Genetic Algorithms and Genetic Programming use the principles of natural selection to evolve solutions to problems that hopefully get better and better.
Dadaism "A western European artistic and literary movement (1916-23) that sought the discovery of authentic reality through the abolition of traditional culture and aesthetic forms."
Here is an example Dadaist poem -
People who can't develop a taste
for the primeval
but rather wrangle in this world
and in their noseless faces
daily brush and paint and lacquer
three abundant heraldic
stylized moustaches
one above another.
Now, let's find something in between, jwz has just done that - DADADO..
DadaDodo is a program that analyses texts for word probabilities, and then generates random sentences based on that. Sometimes these sentences are nonsense; but sometimes they cut right through to the heart of the matter, and reveal hidden meanings.

My High School had a Battlebots Team
My former (just graduated) high school had a Battlebots IQ team. They put up a website , which details their robot, E2, and the competition. They did quite well, winning 6 in the double elimination format. I didn't participate in this, but I was involved in the Panasonic Creative Design Challenge, a robot competiton open to high school students in the State of New Jersey. I reccomend this competition to interested students, since I won a two grand scholarship that is going toward my EE degree.

Counterpoint
1958 - TheThe integrated circuit
I bet even your toaster has an IC in it :) (and don't say "how useless is that?", because my toaster makes some pretty good toast exactly how I like it every time). Most of your modern conveniences owe their existence to this fantastic idea. One thing you're failing to mention are advances on those pre-1946 concepts (IC is an extrapolation on the transistor).
1983 - PCR
It's rather difficult to study genetics without large quantities of DNA. Along with this tech there is gel electrophoresis that you use to analyze your strands.
1984 - RouterNeed I say more? Would we be on the 'Net right now without it?
There is just too much to list, but these were some of my favorites. You get the picture. There are some others, like the Operating System, where would you be without that? Or the C Programming Language as another, or high level languages in general.
I think an important point here is that the presentation talked about advances in areas where there's not much room for advancement. Trying to make any major improvements in "word processor technology" is pretty futile.

Re:A beter mascot for Linux?
May I suggest you do some more research on you subject?
"Like most birds, the reproductive cycle before the courting displays. Once individuals acquire mates, the pair initiates copulations after a series of displays. The reproductive structures in penguins do not differ extensively from those of other avian families. All birds reproduce sexually: males transfer sperm to the female through the cloaca. During copulation, the event of contact between the two cloacas is known as the cloaca kiss."

Re:High school?Currently, I'm a rising junior at Carnegie Mellon university, but my high school was the Academy for the Advancement of Scienct and Technology.
They've had some pretty stunning technology classes for a while, including classes in web design (a 4 trimester sequence!), and of course CS which they teach in C++. More recently (since I graduated), I'm told they have added classes in Cisco, complete with a lab that has about a dozen routers.
Their home page is http://www.bergen.org/AAST

I have a 730T
About all I can say about Linux is that so far, it won't work because it doesn't like the PCMCIA hard drive. I used a DOS-based distro that loads via LoadLin to avoid the LILO issues, and the kernel loads, then times out while trying to access hdc1 (why is it hdc1 instead of hda1? Weird.) I bought and tried 3 different brands and sizes of hard drives too, so it's probably not because of a specific PCMCIA implementation. And I tried several different vintages of kernels. And I tried the "old disk-only driver" for IDE. Was going to start asking around on the kernel-dev list since I've asked everywhere else I can think of and haven't gotten a satisfactory answer; but haven't gotten around to it.
I have Windows for Pen (based on 3.1) on my Dauphin DTR-1, and I'm loathe to actually use that, but I bet it'd work. Drivers for the pen are available... I saw that somewhere.
Others have suggested GeoWorks, that old competitor to Windows that died miserably... except they got bought and it's now part of a package called New Deal Office. There's some stuff here.
Gem would also be interesting.
General 730T links:
- GlobalMonitor 730T page - these guys sold me my 730T on ebay, they sell quite a few, and they have been helpful in setting up a means to exchange info among their customers. But they still haven't posted my comments yet.
- Dan's IBM ThinkPad 730 pages - this is a link that I found on the GlobalMonitor page
- What the heck, I think it's time I started a page but there's no info there yet...

Why laptops in high schools wont work..
Here, at the Bergen Academies, ready access to computers institutes one major problem: not using them correctly. They plan to give these kids laptops (which , by the way, are very valuable and are a penchant for stealing) to use for educational purposes, when, most likely, they will be used to download pornography or games or warez or sign on to AOL(*shudder*, especially on an ATM connection), or just do general internet surfing not pertaining to your class (like I am right now
:) .)
It would most likely detract from their learning experience, especially if wireless networking and internet access is deployed, due to these facts. A better alternative would to give the students a little email server with dumb terminals hooked into printers, so they can email themselves their homework to a home address, and research with NS or IE, and print to a local printer. Or you can post all major assignments to a BBS or calendar hosted by your school (Like This), or by a gratutitous company.

College students greedy?
Remember that kid who distributed warez and mp3s through his college and got busted big time? Well, just because the students have the bandwidth doesn't mean they'll use it correctly (at my gracefully endowed high school, we have a ton, and it doesn't get used for the means of education (we have a streaming music server for christs sake!) It spoils the student, although I would kill to have this kind of hookup at my home.
Speaking of internet connections, does anyone have a reasonable idea why DSL service hasn't expanded and is there any way to light a torch under the ISP/Phone Company's ass (Bell Atlantic) to get them to move quicker?
