Yo, 404 on the link provided. Think it was just a

Service..
I've been thinking about modifying my VSDB software to do something like this...

The universal gift.
A box of crayons and a cardboard box big enough to sit in. Turn it on its side for cave-y goodness (2 is a bit too young for spaceship goodness).

Lies
Yep.. lies, just like those big ol' blinkenlights computers in Jurassic park, they just built a routine that looked good. Marketing is lies, get over it... just tweak how false you want to be. You are selling a dream of what you could be - deal with it.

Honestly
I think the books and video games (particularly SW Battlefront 2) made for excellent expansion of the universe... WAAAY better than the movies. Should have left the movies to VG plot lines.

Lunar colonies
These will be the sort of projects that will provide the engineering knowhow to build actual lunar colonies.

Ahh.. American Relevance
ahh.. American Relevance in the new century fades a little more. Just hope we don't go kicking and screaming.

How interesting
I just emailed my senator yesterday because I was concerned about the mention that environmental refugees (which there have already been several groups) are not recognized by the international community, and was hoping to at least get the idea mentioned before the senate.
I hope he reads it, or a staffer does - seeing as he just got a promotion and might be a little busy.

Re:Distrust by the masses..
Soap isn't ever PH neutral without all sorts of crazy additives, but you can make it very mild.
Google "Hot Process Soap" (water + lye) + olive oil makes great soap.
If you measure properly and follow directions, it comes out very "neutral".
I take it camping on scouting trips, even brush my teeth with it ( a little dab'll do ya ) no fragrance soap is pretty great stuff.

HBO?
MST3K - ahh, highschool. There was an older show, (on HBO?) I suddenly remember, Where they had comedians sitting on barstools in front of a studio audience, doing much the same - but live. Mostly to old B&W detective stories and mysteries, rather than bad sci-fi/fantasy. Anyone remember the name?

Distrust by the masses..
I make soap, partially for fun and partially due to allergies. I had a neighbor say "You're allowed to do that?" with total disbelief. I also make bread (not on the same day), and had the same reaction.
I imagine that any kind of scientific exploration is viewed with distrust and quite a bit of fear. My son has recently discovered the world of electronics, and I feel bad for him since even radio shack doesn't carry what it used to.
I wonder if this shift is endemic in our country, from a nation of strivers to a nation purely of consumers.

A pleasure to work with, as well..
We (Bigattichouse's Vectorspace Database) went through their Linux certification (as well as Grid cert), and they were a pleasure to work with - providing expert advice and patience in every step of the process. Not exactly on topic, I guess, but I thought I'd share. They really seem to embrace the engineering and spirit of Linux.

Re:I'm in what else can I do?
My best friend was 18 when she was diagnosed, and is now a survivor (in her 30's). I added a pink entry to our site to support the Yound Survival Coalition. ( http://www.bigattichouse.com/ )

Shameless Plug
I use a tool I built to manage all the problems and solutions that I run in to. I kept running into a problem every few months, and forgetting what I did to solve it last time, so I built my knowledge base.

MetaTest
I've been working on a simple idea for a while, a programming language that *provides* the testing capability, implementing the testing story. Its not a horribly difficult idea, just something I've been playing with. My goal is create a test language you can then compile against various languages to see if the implementation in any given language behaves in the same way.. also to make unit tests a little easier to read. You can read about it on the project blog: http://www.bigattichouse.com/thoughtbrew.php?BREW

So what about web+P2P?
Thats funny, I was just posting my project (WebP2P) to freshmeat.
The idea is to create a P2P network that actually runs using PHP pages as the peers... technically it would be "pure browser" since tha pages use http to communicate. -

Clean room what ever they show.
Have one group of developers look at the offending code, write up a series of unit tests that describe the code, then offer the tests up to anyone who has NEVER looked at the code. Re-write the offending code and document that you followed this clean room process.. Problem solved, SCO is left in the dust, and everyone can get on with their lives. I'll coordinate the process if necessary. Got me a nice web-based workflow engine that would fit the bill prefectly. www.bigattichouse.com

Emergency access
Creating ex-temp webs like this might assist insurance adjusters and other computer-needing personnel to work better in emergency hot zones... it would be nice if a company out there started manufacturing the "cans" for emergency use and the FCC made some modifications to the rules for emergency usage
... so every little town could have a few "wi-fi" kits in storage to chain up when a hurricane has leveled everything.. you could also throw some authentication mechanisms on the idea and build a quick "emergency VoIP network" the same way. Just a thought from the thoughtbrew: www.bigattichouse.com -
Visualization
We've been working on combining the social software idea and visualization to build CRM-type tools. http://www.bigattichouse.com/peoplelinking/

Talk to everyone you know
Talk to your wife's buddies, talk to your former boss, if someone says they're not looking to hire, you should ask "Is there one other company you know of that might need our help?" You are surrounded by a network of people, use it.
We'll be launching our network contact manager (peoplelinking) in a month or two as one way to visualize your contact network, keep track of callbacks, and other fun.
In the mean time, we've created a site where you can network with others like yourself using our data engine.
