Re:What is the Real Reason Hurd Was Fired?
Seriously, you think sexual harassment (an entirely civil matter) is worse than embezzlement (a criminal matter)? How does that make a lick of sense?
It's dangerous to assume that sexual harassment can't escalate to a criminal charge:
Is Sexual Harassment A Crime?
While there is no specific criminal charge called "sexual harassment," [in Kentucky] behavior that constitutes sexual harassment may violate other criminal laws. Possible criminal charges include:Stalking
Assault
Harassing communicationsThus, in addition bringing a civil action against an employer, school, and/or individual, targets of sexual harassment may also find it helpful to file reports with law enforcement officials and assist with prosecutions. Understanding Sexual Harassment

Re:Flamebait
Well, you can improve though. AnoNET looks interesting and works too. And it's actually a quite nice community.
Activities
Please note that any resource listed in this section can only be reached when your connection to the VPN is active. If it is not, you will get unexpected results.
Once you have connected to the VPN itself, you may do any number of things:
To get the full anoNet experience, use one of our cache DNS servers (1.0.9.53 or 1.10.11.1) so that you can resolve anoNet domains! Getting your own domain such as example.ano is no problem, just ask!
- Visit our Wiki, wiki.ano (http://1.0.9.3).
- Visit our IRC network using 1.0.9.1 or 1.0.1.1 port 6667 (6697 for SSL) with your favourite IRC client. Join #anonet and we can help you get started with anoNet.
- If you would like a more secure form of communication, you can use our SILC server at silc.ano:706
- Visit our message forum talk.ano (http://1.0.9.4), where you can discuss anything under the sun! Literally. That is what this network is about -- free speech.
- Use the anoNet jabber network (jabber.ano port 5222 or 5223 ssl for v1 clients), where you can chat with others using your favourite Jabber client! Jabber directory at users.jabber.ano
- Grab yourself a webmail account mail.ano (http://1.0.9.6) if you don't want to run your own mail server. anoNet has no spam.
- Search anoNet using our spidering search engine search.ano (http://1.0.9.8).
- Use our Bittorrent tracker anotorrent.ano (http://1.0.9.200)
- There is an open Icecast streaming server at stream.icecast.ano (1.0.9.16) port 8000, password anonet. It supports 20 streams and 200 listeners. The directory server is at icecast.ano (http://1.0.9.16)
- Once again to promote free speech we have a multi-user blog at anojournal.ano (http://1.0.9.13)
- If file sharing is your thing we have ed2k and dc++ servers.
- If gaming is for you, there is a bnetd server. (Starcraft, Starcraft: Brood Wars, Warcraft II, Warcraft III, Diablo, Diablo II)
- We also have World of Warcraft server setup (Running MaNGOS and a combination of SDB and Modb)
Remember, you can be a server too! Do you want to play a multi-player game? Go ahead! Install a game server, advertise it around (if you like), and get people to play with you!
Not only can you be a game server, but you can offer files, stream media, host your own web page, or anything else you want!
There is far too much to the network to list here, if it sounds like something you would be interested in, then connect up. -
anoNet
Personally I like the concept of anoNet more and it's a bit more interesting too, as it allows all the usual software (browser, p2p software, http/irc server etc) to work.
anoNet is a decentralized friend-to-friend network built using VPNs and software BGP routers. anoNet works by making it difficult to learn the identities of others on the network allowing them to anonymously host content and IPv4 services.
It is impossible on the Internet to communicate with another host without knowing its IP address. Thus, the anoNet realizes that you will be known to your peer, along with the
/30 subnet used for communicating with them. A routing protocol, BGP, allows any node to advertise any routes they like, and this seemingly chaotic method is what provides users with anonymity. Once a node advertises a new route, it is hard for anyone else to determine if it is a route to another machine in another country via VPN, or just a dummy interface on that users machine. It's a fun thing to try out, since you can normally use mirc and browse on the anoNet sites that end in
.ano tld. There's web search engine, irc server, bittorrent tracker, private WoW server and probably other "real internet" stuff too.Activities

"Some of these people have gathered and joined forces to build their own version of the Internet. An Internet for the people and by the people. One such implementation may be found at http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/ and http://anonet.org/ "
Oh, lord! Here's a very small clue. Unless you own both end-points and the middle, then it can never be your internet. Sneaking around will not do it, especially when you consider the physical nature of the internet. -
A new dawn for the Internet
The next internet is already being implemented by hobbyists, idealists and realists. There are those who want information to be free, those who want the Big Government(TM) to keep their hands off, those who feel that it's time to take the 'net back. These people are like you and me: they are tired of reading about the latest threats made by the RIAA/MPAA to bend laws to their twisted will. They are tired of knowing that bills introduced by the government to Combat $concept(TM) will be abused by special interest groups. They are fed up with the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt being planted by media and corporations.
Some of these people have gathered and joined forces to build their own version of the Internet. An Internet for the people and by the people. One such implementation may be found at http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/ and http://anonet.org/
This is not a darknet of paedophiles, script kiddies and warez traders. It is an independent effort by those who think that the Internet can be more than a money making scheme by Big Business or tool for brainwashing the masses.
Go on, take the blue pill. Wonderland is waiting. -
MOD PARENT UP
For those of us who disagree, there is a movement called anoNet that created a seperate internet. In early 2005, a few people fed up with the way the Internet was heading, began in earnest to create a large wide area network that was secure and lived in its own space. On this new network anyone would be free to do as they saw fit - roam about, host services, or just be social without fear of being monitored or even worse censored. The first step to bring this network to fruition was to encrypt the information that normally travels across the Internet. anoNet is a full IP network with many users, an IRC network, wiki, SILC, email, web, PGP, and much much more. For more information: http://www.anonet.org/ or http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/

A solution exists
My advice is, start the planning stages for the next internet, and then when there is the will to bring it forward, bring it forward.

anoNet
The time for a fully encrypted network is now. Some people may say: "Well what if the NSA gets on that network?" The answer is simple, good luck to the NSA on tieing a 1.0.0.0/8 IP to a real IP / person.
Seriously folks, wake up. It is time we took the net back and anoNet is how to do it. -

Re:Join Tor Today!!!
I don't believe you can pipe VOIP over TOR. You can however over anoNet.
Take the net from them before they take it from you. -
Re:Time to start encrypting *everything*.
If you want to encrypt everything, you should try AnoNet - a fully encrypted darknet using OpenVPN and Quagga. Run anything, talk about anything, hide, chat, do whatever you please.

It's an excellent scalability mechanism -- everyone gets turned away. Bravo, sir.

Re:You're on it baby..
In practice though, it would be insane to let everyone with a DSL line to two different locations update routing table through the entire internet.
We seem to be scaling rather nicely.

Not hardware.
What you describe would be nice if everyone and their brother could afford a link into a frame cloud. But that just isn't realistic. So what some of us have done is exactly what you describe, but virtually with software.

Re:The whole privacy movement seems to have fizzle
It hasn't completely fizzled and it hasn't become 100% user friendly. But we at anoNet are trying to make it as newbie friendly as possible.

Illegal.... NOT!
Is learning illegal? All the same protocols that apply to the "real" internet apply to some (most) darknets, at least the one I helped to build. So maybe people just want to learn bgp, ospf, dns, how to set up a mail server
..etc...etc..
Most ISPs these days block port 25, 80, etc..etc.. and you CERTAINLY can't get an ASN unless you are a huge corporation. So what better way to learn some very advanced routing protocols and procedures than to help implement them in a private matter.
Granted there is the added bonus that you don't have to worry about big brother.
Then there is the OTHER added bonus that only people that have a clue stick around. We don't mind teaching, but we have found most people that _would be_ warez kiddies don't have the paitience to learn.
Proud founder of anoNet.

Re:Ok, real response
Say you are the only person with access to two different social groups, all info must flow over your connection creating a huge bottleneck that the software is not allowed to compensate for.
We found a way around that issue. Feel free to drop in and see for yourself: http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/ -

There are ways to play it safe...
When dealing with oppressive governments there are ways to play it safe. Even if you *THINK* you are playing by the rules why take a chance.
There was a very good concept someone came up with several years ago to build an encrypted network on top of the internet. Myself and a few others decided to put forth the time and resources needed to bring it to fruition. What we ended up with is anoNet.
Most of the info about the layout of the network is available at that link, but here is the "quick and dirty".
We took OpenVPN combined it with Quagga then used IANA reserved address space to build a fault tolerant, encrypted, anonymous network. The basic premis is that you only know the ips of your peers. On top of that you make sure that the people that you peer with are in countries that are not on the best of terms when it comes to cooperating with law enforcement. IE: China -> US. This network is _primarily_ used for two purposes: 1 - We are a self contained (for lack of a better word) Darknet. We have root DNS servers, a search engine (mnogosearch), email (webmail if someone doesn't want to run their own), IM (jabber), Web servers (with the ability to post anonymous content, and by anonymous, I mean anonymous even from the people INSIDE anoNet), FTP servers, IRC, News servers, Asterisk VOIP (although this is still in testing), Proxy servers, etc..etc.. We have taken great pains to re-implement the internet but with anonymity and encryption in mind. 2 - To provide users in countries that restrict internet access (China) the ability to browse (proxy) in a secure, safe manner.
I was going to throw a few common questions and answers in here but this post is long enough. If you want more info we have a nice Wiki setup to handle just about any questions you could have (but you have to connect to access it).
Bottom line if the people mentioned in this article had been using our mail relays / proxies this wouldn't be an issue right now. If people in (supposedly) less oppressive countries want to make a difference in the world, then donate a little time and bandwidth to the cause instead of blowing up countries. -

Re:practicality?
Until those contries ban vpn traffic (which would mean banning ssl so it prob. won't happen) there will always be alternatives (think darknet with a light on).
We have been running for over a year now and have people from many VERY oppressive coutries. They do as they please, say what they will, and there have been no issues. For that matter there are people from less _outwardly_ oppressive countries that discuss some pretty "out there" ideas. Things that the US, UK, etc...etc... prob. don't want people talking about.
See Wikipedia for some more info. -
Re:The Price of Being Chinese
This is why more people should consider darknets. I guess we (anoNet) aren't completely dark since we have a light on. But we have safe gaurds in place that allow us to do that.
Hell, anyone that is interested in how the internet works should check it out -- you could learn a lot. But anonymity / privacy (encryption) are first and foremost. If you click on that link and decide to connect, then come in and blab where you are from ... you can pretty much assure that you won't be getting a perm. link. -
free speach at a cost?
well all those who belive they have freedom could support other people through and anonymous network called 'anonet' if you have some bandwidth to spare and 24/7 connection and want to learn some stuff along the way, then see: http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/
