Re:Is that you Comcast?
Apparently, reading Slashdot and your outbound email was not good enough. Yes indeed, Cox did correct the immediate technical problem, but no one is swearing off creepy practices. Comcast, as usual, is going the last mile to assure everyone that Big Brother is watching but you can be sure that other ISPs have and will be using the same "technology" to spy on their users. How else will TIA happen?
Except this isn't "snooping." Actually they are reading Blogs so they can improve their service. This is after numerous stories in the media on comcastmustdie.com and Mona "The Hammer" Shaw. In fact, businesses do this all the time. The only time I can recall it resulting in a lawsuit was with Lowe's suing someone over the site lowes-sucks.com
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/09/21/lowes_threatens_legal_action/It is still sad many businesses must resort to reading blogs rather than having more technical support personnel to answer the phones when someone needs it the most or to change their minds.

this was crossposted to the BRLUG newbies list, which is why you can get to it. the plot gets thicker after this, but alas the CCCC list is members-only.

Some of your own medicine
twitter deserves frequent ridicule and criticism because he frequently does
things which are wrong. He is either too stupid to understand the social
harm he does or is too greedy to care and he should be called to task each
time he is caught saying or doing the wrong things. This is an impossible
task for any single person, of course, but it's easy for the community if we
cooperate and share what we know.

Re:What?
The poster to that LUG list never claimed it was the content of the message that they were filtering. This is just stupid.
Further down the thread you find the important detail:I tried to send an email. The email only contained text. The text Cox
objected to was "http://my_homebox_IP_number/"

Go Fuck Yourself.
I sure as hell didn't write that.
You might not be responsible for that thread, but your are responsible for representing yourself as someone else and part of a harassment campaign against people who say things you or your employer don't like to hear. If you are doing it for yourself, you're an asshole. If you are doing for money, you are a whore. Either way, you're scum and should not be be trusted.
By the way, it's not working. Slashdot is still an entertaining and informative place, even for people like me.
You should do something better for a living like dishwashing. It pays better and would put you in touch with nicer people than your current employers and associates.

Re:M$ numbers.
I'm confused now. Apparently this is Erris, which points to a "twitter" troll (as usual), then "willyhill" posted that one you replied to...? So "twitter" and "erris" are the same person? Or "willyhill" is Erris, and therefore you? Or twitter?
-
Willyhill is a Troll
The article is a joke that makes fun of M$'s insulting "blame the user" attitude.
The willyhill account was made to harass BRLUG member Will Hill and Slashdot members Erris and Twitter. While I'd never censor the drivel offered by this troll, you can depend on none of it being true. As in the case of other imposters, I recommend that this post or similar disclaimer be willyhill's homepage. It's obvious that he's not the author of the page he points to currently.
-
Re:M$ numbers.
Do you think I'm incapable of reading through an article and understanding what it says?
I think you are just more harassment for BRLUG member Will Hill and Slashdot members Erris and twitter. Nothing you say should be trusted.

Re:The Bungi is the problem.I used Windoze as a desktop for seven years, had program development as part of a job for a year, did more than a year of retail tech, and I'm still surrounded by it.
not two years ago you apparently didn't know that the nt kernel tracks pids and you didn't even understand how the ntfs security model works. now suddenly everyone is supposed to believe you're an expert hotshot windows devloper? that sound you hear in the background is me pissing my shorts while i laugh at you.
good old willy, tripping on his own shit over and over again

This is getting old.
Some kind of Fanboy persists:
You can easily get the text out of a docx file, just open the zipped file and look at the XML text. It's an open format. Are you making your point out of ignorance, or deliberately
... [insult]?Read the thread yourself. He was unable to get text out by your old trick. There are a couple others where no one is reporting a way to deal with M$'s obnoxious new format. M$ has done it again and all of their talk about openness and caring is worthless. This is intentional waste at it's finest.
-
No, OOXML is M$ only.
An AC has the nerve to say OOXML is usable:
your comment that only MS can use MS formats is a red-herring
Show me working Mac and GNU/Linux editors. No, I don't mean the pathetic half done Word readers from Novel and M$, I mean full working office suits. It's not because OOXML is not really Open. The people who reverse engineered the previous generation of M$ DOC are more than capable of understanding and implementing this supposedly easier format, but it's not really easier and it's going to take time. This is because M$ is lying and there's no real difference between the new and old formats. It can and is being used as a binary container. The unzip trick no longer works.
-
That's even funnier.
You turds trolled the BRLUG and got this. Ha ha, I missed that one, thanks again.

The twitter experienceAh, willy. So many friends. So much material. You're doing great!
For those of you who wonder just who little twitter here is, a synopsis:
This is the original confirmation of his real identity. We've had that suspicion for quite a while but there was no way to prove it for sure. He reacted predictably enough instead of just ignoring the post.
Here is further confirmation. And this. As you can see, this guy is just insanely retarded - all he had to do do was just ignore the posts and we still wouldn't know for sure. He didn't reply to this, but by that time it wasn't necessary. Someone (not us) then posted this as well. We think that was the same person who registered this account, but we're not sure. He also has another lame home page. And this is his Cox page.
As for his sockpuppet account, here's some dialectic proof (you can see the 'twitter' oozing out of there well enough), along with mention of "nuclear power", a topic which he claims to know about but is just generally ignorant about (as with everything else). Here's one where he mentions the BRLUG. A message was posted to the BRLUG (see "Willy evangelizes" thread here) for further confirmation, which he graciously provided.
For those of who are new to the twitter experience, here's a thread that distills the interaction between KeithRussel and twitter: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=195829&cid=160 48784. Wow.

Re:Like that legacy talk.re: your post here, some history is in order here. This person was the one who started it all, posting this this literally thousands of times using some sort of script and proxy. He explained in a post once why he was doing it, but I don't have that anymore. He actually got twitter downmodded to hell and back, forcing him to stop posting or about two months (because he was posting at -1). He sort of went away after a while, and some of us picked up the slack.

Re:And I want better still.
That's funny, by your own assertion, Amarok does not really work well.
-
Re:AstroTurf is all they have left.with this declaration of war
Willy, you forgot the rest of the thread.
There, that's better. You're welcome.
And let's hope this doesn't get modded up because then the whole sequence of events will be posted, right from the point you lied about how you "share your code" up until your friends at the BRLUG expressed their amusement at your dishonest ramblings and everything in between.
-
AstroTurf is all they have left. The same losers who post flamebait here, have invaded other mailing lists. They were dumb enough to admit it on our list with this declaration of war:
We shall continue to disseminate these pearls of wisdom
... No matter how many fake email address, no matter how many open proxies - we shall prevail! The goal is to make the lists look as described, unfriendly and rude. They do this with their own rude posts and heckling.
They also aim at self censorship. By calling people rude all day long, they hope to keep people from unfavorably describing their crap. Describing Windoze as second rate is not rude, it's an overwhelming statement of fact and it's easy to present in a way that does not insult the user.
These efforts are co-ordinated and they have been from the very beginning. Microsoft knows the power of word of mouth and seeks to influence it:
http://web.archive.org/web/20050313031916/http:
/ /www.kickassgear.com/Articles/Microsoft.htmBullshit floated on those lists is usually echoed by shills in the Wintel press. Their "ambassador" program at universities is another extension of this program. Given their technical inferiority to most competition, hype, deception and insults are all M$ has to work with. They are losing traction.
It does not work on the local lists, of course, because free software is all about sharing and they still don't have enough resources. Rude people are ignored, technical questions are still answered and newbies are directed to anwsers. The LUG has two newbie efforts, it's own list and volunteers at the local computer club where classes are offered once a month. Those classes are filled and growing.
The end result for Microsoft is a loser in any case because lying does not work. Everytime they get caught doing it, they undermine their reputation further. This is why they have one of the worst reputations in world. Everyone knows they are a bunch of dishonest bullies with second and third rate software.
-
Re:apt-get install ie7 worked for me!
-
One Note, Part of a $500,000 Download at LSU.The Ambassador program has been going on for years at LSU. I have yet to have run into one yet, thankfully.
Part Two of the program is a $500,0000 per year site license, as noted here, which brings the Microsoft Tax to everyone on campus. This is a program that eats up 1/8 of the $150/year student tech fee for the ability to download the most basic of software, productivity software, email client and this goofey one note. Someone on the thread does the math and estimates Microsoft will pocket about $300 per software set they distribute, which is well above the usual Dell rip-off. Of course, it is much much more than a download of Mepis, which has more and better applications.
In typical Microsoft style, they are touting the rip-off as "free software". They spammed every student on campus with an email that mentioned a commitment but no costs and had the nerve to stand in the middle of free speech alley and proclaim "free" downloads. What a turn off.
Surprisingly, it has not worked very well. People are outraged when they learn the cost. Few people want to risk their only working computer to "upgrade" software they already own, as free software advocates can tell you. Most people walked by the barkers at free speech alley and could care less. Did they really think people care about Outlook? I was one of the few people who bothered to talk to them and I agree with the BRLUG poster above, the reps were poorly trained and did not know their product. Spam backfires. Most people are going to look at the Microsoft dream play, where a fellow student tries to hawk a program, as weird and disturbing.
-
A site license should bother you.I run Linux and use OSS almost exclusively at home, work and school. If greedy software companies want to push more people to Open Source it can only help. After all, companies only control the market if consumers allow it.
I run nothing but free software, but now me and everyone else at LSU gets to pay the Microsoft Tax like everyone else. The $500,000 / year deal is so bad that the per copy distribution cost will be close to or exceed CompUSA customer rape prices. Far from pushing everyone into the Microsoft camp, it's being billed as "free software" and it will delay student use of real free software. With a site license, you too can subsidize other people's bad choices.
Talk to your student government representatives NOW. here is no escape without knowledge.
-
Sounds familiar. They also have "developers" as well as companies.
The groups aims sound familiar. Oh yeah, there a lot like my LUG's mission statement:
The name is a little fancier than "User's Group", but that's what they are doing. Similar things can be found:
- Casting a shadow on Microsoft
- Deep in the heart of Texas.
- In New York City
- Moscow
- Shanghai
- and most likely, where you live. Neat, huh?
What you have to realize is that all of these groups are fighting SCO everyday. Everyday, millions of free software users voice their opinion of the SCO's ownership of Unix, the Linux kernel and everything. Don't you hear them? Neither do SCO's accountants. Microsoft is about the only company that's bought into this extortion. The people who know, think SCO is full of bull and don't waste much time on it.
Reasonable opinions have been delivered by the Open Software Initiative, the Free Software Foundation, Linus Torvalds and the German court system. The local LUG would be happy to talk to you about this, and their mailing lists are amazingly free of Astroturf. Not even Microsoft can buy enough fake roots to cover all the LUGs in the world. It's nice to hear from this OSV, whether you call it a LUG, marketing, advocacy and focus group, or friend of the court.
-
I'm not afraid at all.Won't it just be easier (if there's any grounds for their action) to zap the offending code from the kernel or are they going to prevent this by not actually telling anyone where it is?
Ding, ding, that's true, and so long as SCO keeps it's mouth shut about what's actually infringing, I'll just abide by the kernel license, the GPL. I don't have much to say to SCO people except that they can come and get free software if they are in Baton Rouge today. This offer, of course, extends to anyone who happens to be in Baton Rouge today.
-
yep that's true.most geeks (like me, and perhaps you) that don't want to buy Windows know enough about computers to put one together from parts. Or at least know a fellow geek who will do so for free or cheap.
Microsoft made it so expensive to buy comodity hardware that was preconfigured that they have trained up their doom. How many enemies have they made? Too many and all knowledgable. They have trained me and many other to know just how shitty their stuff is and how not to need it. I will gladly help others to avoid them at no cost. If you are in Baton Rouge, come join me and my friends Monday.
The revolution was not televised.
