There is a new Change.Org petition to protest Microsoft's unilateral push of Windows 10 onto consumers whether they want it or not. I find their responses to the public comments to be evasive, dishonest, and confrontational. They make no attempt to seriously address the issues in a way that could lead to compromise solutions or mitigation of problems.

They give a bunch of reasons for denial. And they didn't approve it and then unapprove it, either; they processed the application and denied it. The whales were captured in Russia before the permit application. Fox News would prefer it to be ambiguous so that it sounds like the big bad Gubermint is hurting everybody by changing their minds. But that didn't happen.

Remember, the default thing with importing marine mammals for public display is that you can't do it. You can't just buy a marine mammal and build an aquarium. You need special permission, because these are intelligent animals who are under continued population stress due to human activity. People have gone to great lengths to afford them some minor protections. You need to get a permit, and it needs to be in the public interest. This company seems to think that they have a right to import marine mammals, but they simply don't. That isn't a right. The government has a significant interest in regulating foreign trade.

There was no approval before the denial. They applied, the public commented, the agency considered, and they denied it. Which is what most of the public wanted in this case. I don't even understand their claim; how could they have approval already before the required public comment period, etc? It makes no sense at all. They knew the process going in; the person doing the review recommended denial, and the Agency agreed and denied. It is a requirement of the law that in order to issue such a permit, it has to not have a negative impact on the species. In this case, these are whales being captured in the wild purely to sell to zoos, and so supporting that trade has a small but negative impact on the species. There is no positive conservation goal identified that balances that. It is purely for entertainment. That is banned under the law where it has any negative impact on the species. In other cases, whales that are threatened in the wild are captured to be used in captive breeding programs that are believed to have a net positive impact on the species. That means it is legal for NOAA to issue the permit in those cases. The Beluga population is not benefiting or expected to benefit from any such breeding program.

Microsoft has been dodging WA State taxes at least since 1997 by redirecting ALL of its profits to a shell company in Nevada.
This petition here has a good analysis here showing running totals between $2.1 BILLION to $8.4 BILLION in dodged taxes.

Microsoft has effectively corrupted and captured the WA State's government, which routinely passes legislation to forgive Microsoft's back taxes, some as large as $100M a year, at times where the state is running deep into deficits.

Offering to "voluntarily" "contribute" 28M annually is like robbing a bank and then "offering" to return a few cents on the dollar.

And as far as the drag queens' complaints, Facebook does in fact 0provide mechanisms, separate from individual pages, for promoting your stage name, band, business, or whatever else you consider your brand. So that is also a stupid non-issue.

You comments do not address the issue where people's real names are flagged as fake.

It's bad enough that official organizations like the census bureau *change* reported demographics and names while doing their surveys, and other official organizations do other similar things without having particular ethnic groups getting singled out because their names are not Western European.

A 'life without parole' sentence is the most horrible torture ever devised. A 'comfortable' life in prison (without institutionalized slavery, malnourishment or brutality) is a modern invention of energy-wealthy society in which a moment's mortal agony is stretched out over many pointless years. The notion that Facebook supports free expression is really quite laughable. You don't even need to be a government to get Facebook to censor images for you. Their content-reporting system allows one self-appointed censor to complain anonymously about an image they don't like (such as two clothed men about to kiss, or PG13-level partial male nudity), and if the complaint gets assigned to someone equally homophobic, the image gets deleted and the person who posted it gets blocked, with no effective method of appeal. The whole Facebook content-policing system is rigged heavily in favor of bullies and censors.

It is trivial to prove you are spreading disinformation. But I applaud you for following the AC tradition of posting false claims. That'll get you quite a distance with people who don't bother to check such claims. However, it won't work for anyone who takes the time to actually look.

Apparently loads of people believe there was a huge amount of fraud and sneakery going on during the entire thing.

As of posting this, it was around 38k.

Various things include an odd number of fire alarms going off, people supposedly writing on things, switching whole piles of yes votes to no, and so on.
There is one that keeps going around with a pile of Yes votes on a No table, but that was where everything was sat before the counting began, not after.

There certainly does look like some dodgy things are happening. Who knows.
Maybe certain people were paid to take off X amounts of yes votes, maybe it is just people looking for any reason to disagree with it.
Essentially half of a country were against the union given the numbers that actually voted. (>80%)
So it is hardly surprising that even 10% of those Yes people will be sorely pissed.
