Re:bureaucracy in action
The title of the petition is: Petitioning Lila Tretikov. Remove new "superprotect" status; and permit Wikipedia communities to enact (current) software decisions uninhibited.
Alternatively, people who have a Wikipedia or Wikimedia account can sign here on Meta. (Only sign in one of these places.) -

Re:Fanboy Glee
Yeah, that actually sucks some serious monkey balls right there. It doesn't make any sense at all for Oracle to do such a thing with something as important as the Java platform.
There has been a petition to remove this "feature" for some time now, but despite the millions of Java developers, it never took off.

Re: And Slashdot goes to zero
So no actual websites then? You do know that FF and IE also have moz- and ms- CSS tags for their specific implementations so this isn't just a Webkit (which BTW is not just Chrome) thing.
Are you intentionally being dense? That post is from Opera, a browser company that was forced to support webkit tags because developers are not putting in the normal prefix-less prefixes or Opera prefixes, but only adding webkit tags even if the standards or Opera support the feature. They finally got fed up and switched to webkit, reducing the variety in mainstream browser engines from 4 to 3.
I do know FF and IE support their own prefixes, but IIRC even FF was also forced to support some webkit tags. This is about vendors forced into support *other* tags. I can't explain it simpler than this.

The rest of the world should follow the lead of Hawaii and ban genetically engineered food and crops. We are living in a wake of negligence from previous harmful substances that were once deemed safe for human health and the environment. Given the unattended consequences of genetically engineered foods and crops, and the global commitment to the precautionary principle in the Rio Declaration, and in the Convention on Biological Diversity, UNCED, 1992, it becomes imperative to institute a global ban on genetically engineered foods and crops At a Conference in 1998, in St Louis, scientists stated that using the term Genetically modified would be confusing because there has been modification over the years through breeding, but breeding is completely distinct from Genetic engineering/transgenic processes. The scientists advised everyone to use the terms genetically engineered or transgenic food and crops. Those opposed to Genetically engineered food and crops do pay attention to science For example, Dr. Thierry Vrain a genetic engineer who worked for 30 years for Agriculture Canada pointed out the following: While on the one hand, the biotech companies argued initially that they should get a patent because their transgenic products were unique; on the other hand, subsequently they proceeded to argue that there was no need to test these products derived from the transgenic process because they were substantially equivalent. He has left the department and is speaking out against genetically engineered food and crops , and he now supports a ban. The profusion of genetically engineered food and crops resulted from institutional collusion. The institutional Collusion, in relation to genetically engineered food and crops, among corporations, governments, universities and regulatory agencies has been endemic; For the sake of food safety and food security for present and future generations: (i) this collusion must end; (ii) the precautionary principle must be invoked, (iii) genetically engineered food and crops, banned; (iv) Genetically engineered products from the shelves, dumped; (v) the charters of Monsanto et al, revoked; and (vi) charges of gross/criminal negligence against these corporations, levied. The rest of the world should follow the lead of Hawaii; There has been a petition, calling for a global ban, launched. http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/the-un-general-assembly-institute-a-global-ban-on-genetically-engineered-food-and-crops

There's a petition
O2 messed up by releasing this tool without explaining what it means, and also by having a whitelist blocker that's so restrictive it's entirely useless. But in some ways this whitelist is a distraction from the main issue of whether anyone should have the right to carry out this censorship, against young people who are in some cases old enough to be having sex. And who has the right to define what is porn, what is sex education, and what is "mature" content, particularly when there are grey areas that shade into political issues? There's a petition against the blocking: http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/bt-o2-talktalk-virgin-media-sky-we-urge-the-government-internet-service-providers-to-rethink-their-filtering-plans-which-are-detrimental-to-free-speech-and-child-safety?share_id=ClZgdVULyz&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition

Re:Wow, I'm going through this now....
Dude, they reverted your posts because what you posted was flat-out wrong, not because they are shills. You stated that Dan Pulcrano owns backpage.com, but he doesn't own it, operate it, or have any direct control over what goes on it. His newspaper does business with it, but that is a far cry from what you actually posted.
I don't think a local DA would make the claim that Pulcrano owns it unless it was true.

Unlimited Use and UK's Disgrace.
In the UK at least 6 years ago when the government was all *cough* pushing the idea it was an E-Govenment. Basically a petition was sent to the Government complaining that ISPs offered unlimited data...which in practice was often seriously crippled that offered little data. The response was to pass the buck to the Advertising Agency Authority who still do little to nothing http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/07/03/government_dodges_unlimited/ That was in 2007. It is now 6 years later and nothing changes https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/ofcom-ban-the-fraudulent-use-of-the-term-unlimited-by-mobile-networks-and-isps .

Re:Florida
I agree completely.
Polk County School's justification for expullsion was (from TFA)Anytime a student makes a bad choice it is disappointing to us. We urge our parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions.
Yes, Polk County School, I think the 16-year-old understands what the general concept of punishment is and that actions have consequences. I don't see how they're going to be able to explain why a small explosion that produced as much force as any other gas reaction in a sealed bottle deserves expulsion, a felony charge, and being tried as an adult.
This one comment on TFA also seems appropriate:

Guys and girls, we should be engaging in activism instead of just posting comments! I've collected the sites and emails offered by other users into one place:

School principal: Ronald.Pritchard@polk-fl.netThe other email someone offered, lbryan.pd@cityofbartow.net, is of "Crime Prevention Practioner" Lyn Bryan and it doesn't work (my email was blocked).
Remember that the school principal is a reasonable person who rightly thinks the girl didn't intend any harm, so we should be supportive of him. -
Was it really a felony?
No. Apparently they have charged rape suspects as Juveniles in that area, but a good student who hurt nobody will be tried as an adult??? It will never drop off her record. Freaking insane.
There is a petition to get the charges dropped and it has well over 10k signatures already:

Oracle contributions
Ever since Oracle decided to bundle the Ask Toolbar with Java they showed the world what they are really made of.
A company their size doing such shady business is unbelievable to me. No matter their contributions in other areas they will stand out as real bad dishonest guys. Add to this the Oracle interpretation of openness regarding MySql development.

Talking about getting old TV shows back... SG:U
Personally, I'd rather they leave Blakes 7 alone, it was great for it's time. If anyone were to bring it back it should be the BBC, like they've done with Doctor Who.
As for other shows that should be back on TV there's Stargate Universe which was cruelly cancelled before its time. Why not help out to get it back on the air again via Netflix and sign the Change.org petition linked below. There's little point asking SyFy as they don't seem to know anything about science fiction anyway.
http://www.change.org/petitions/netflix-save-stargate-universe
The other day there were 3000 signatures, today it's over 4000. With the help of Slashdot I reckon we could hit over 10K in no time. The target is 100K I think.

More petitions
I like everyone else is upset at this. One of the best Google services shut down - obviously their target audience is not me. There just isn't a good replacement for a web-based service such as this (see all the points previously stated) making an Android/iOS app a poor fit, and even standalone desktop applications poor (especially the go away for a few days and all the feeds are picked up part).
I am at the point that I will happily close my Google Plus account (don't really use it) as a protest vote if someone is organising something like this (Occupy Google Plus anyone?)
I hope everyone can sign one of the 3 petitions:

Re:Vote with your wallet
Doubt it, they will just blame piracy and shove even more DRM on it, they may eventually fail but more companies using DRM like this will come, how are they supposed to know why you didn't buy it if you don't tell them? I believe the best solution is to spread as much word of bad press like this as we can, keep showing these companies that we don't want always online for games we may want to play single player in, and keep giving these games bad reviews stating why you didn't like the always online, and talk about the issue for as long as possible so they never forget. Stop letting these companies convince themselves that the reason things go wrong is because of piracy; don't vote with your wallet, vote with your voice - spread your opinion everywhere, sign petitions such as the one here . If you want to see change, then do something about it.

Micah Zenko on Drones - CFR - Knows his Shit !

Good quote from him today on Rand Paul's filibuster "More important than the theater of Rand Paul’s filibuster would be its impact (if any) on rallying the sustained interest of his colleagues to examine the full scope of America’s ten years and four months-practice of targeted killings. This will only be possible if the White House—as it has promised to do for many months—decides to more comprehensively engage with Congress, the American people, and the world about this unending Third War." also sign this petition if you want https://www.change.org/petitions/international-community-united-nations-and-united-states-congress-make-targeted-killing-internationally-accountable

This is the second post I've seen in as many days on Green Bank, and no mention of the fact that the NSF is planning on closing the facility to save money. Green Bank is the largest movable radio telescope in the world. If you feel--like I do--that this would be a detriment to the nation, please sign the petition or, even better, write your Congressperson.
I saw your post only after I made a similar post about GBT losing funding (so much for my karma, damn it.) I'm wondering about the timing of this controversy over RF emission constraints, if the GBT has indeed lost funding. I echo your concern, and hope many, many tax-payers sign on to the petition.

First Class Fliers Shouldn't Get Faster Screening
There is a petition on change.org asking TSA to get rid of "priority" screening lines. As the petition says, the speed of a government service should NOT depend on how much we pay to an airline, and TSA should not allow airlines to profit by offering better access to a government service as a perk for a high priced ticket (or participation in their reward programs). The petition doesn't have a lot of signatures yet, but to me it's a no brainer, so I hope it catches on.
