Re:A story without much of a pointThe article tells a good story about how Linux is at the center of a massive nexus of script-kiddies who are eager to destroy anyone standing in their way.
Then, how come http://www.codex.lu still exists?

Re:Is the author really that stupid?Or is he just being sarcastic?
Wrong story!
One would imagine PSP format is designed to be played on the Sony PSP... you know, the strange black thing generating so much fuss.
Hmmm, can't make anything of this. I guess this is really again one of those comments posted to the wrong story (but, then, how did it get modded to 3?)
Nevermind, have some fun, and pop over to codex.lu!

New trackerless and index-less bit-torrent!
No central point of failure. Cannot be shut down by the evil thugs (RIAA, MPAA, Promusicae,
...). Check it out here! -
Bandwidth of a wormhole?
Instability of the wormhole increases with its diameter ("throat"). However, "large" diameters are only needed to transfer physical objects. If all you transfer is information, throat size is irrelevant unless you are transmitting really huge amounts of data.

Luxembourgish banks are safe
Most major Luxembourgish bank use a system where in addition to your password, you have to enter 3 digits whose position is randomly from a card of 16. That way, even if a thief snoops the transaction, he's only got 3 digits from the card, and he will need to retry very often until those 3 come up again.

Re:American researchers
What is sarcasm? This!

Re:You're missing the pointFunny, I was in a similar kind of situation. Gave my girlfriend a domain for her birthday, and the next day, you know, she bounces around with my best friend.
However, I am not vindicative, no. I transferred the domain to her. Btw, they made good use of it, and now they use it to host their party sound & light outfit on it, which they founded three months later.
In case you're interested, the URL is codex.lu

Re:Exploits et al.,News flash: Web-based technologies change monthly, if not weekly. If we waited for them all to mature, we'd still be viewing Lynx compatible pages.
You say this as if it were a disadvantage. Do you also consider access ramps near buildings to be eye-sores, and do you routinely park your cark on the spots reserved for the disabled?
Lemme tell you: lot's of people don't use lynx by choice, but because they have a disability (blindness) that prevents them from using other browser. Text-only browsers may be used together with a braille line, or a text-to-speech synthesizer to enable the blind to experience the web.
Franky, web designers who pride themselves that their pages are not lynx compatible are dorks.
Also, those of us who build for the web have to deal with an incredibly variable environment (OS, browser, connect speed, screen size, language, etc).
Rather than building specific versions of your page for your target, think of building target-independant pages. Stick to standards. Stick to "minimality principle": If all you want are buttons with pretty pictures, uses gif images, rather than flash animations. Oh, and add an ALT tag too, for the sake of your blind visitors.
Idealism is nice, but standing on a soapbox screaming 'Be Patient!' is not really practical given the tech-o-the-week world that the web is right now.
So, just explain to your management that your "flashy" website exposes your company to multi-million dollar A.D.A. lawsuits. Maybe then they'll understand better.

Re:The BlindI also don't beleive that blind people are being denied access to the net because a small number of websites use this type of authentication when you create a new account.
You are right. The number of sites who use this technologies are fortunately few and far between. Moreover, they do it to achieve a laudable goal (fighting spam).
What's far worse are those sites that require Internet Exploder for not good reason other than to strike their self-rigtheous ego. Probably, they are not even aware that by their posturing they are shutting out blind people which surf using lynx and a braille line. And if they were aware, they'd probably not even care, claiming that blind people are inferior.
It's an ugly world out there

Re:Flattery and ImitationIt's too bad that Web programmers will write code that only works on IE. (I understand why they do).
I don't understand why anybody would do that. Maybe a handsome bribe? But even then, I think a site like this will hardly do anything to improve Micro$oft's reputation. I dunno about you, but when I visited it, my first reaction was "What a bunch of self-righteous pricks! If at least they knew how to spell!". The whole thing is so silly, that they even made national news as flop site of the week. That was mid April, and strangley enough their site didn't change even after that nomination.
I think most of these are dedicated Intranet type websites,
Example above is visible from the public internet...
but I've been to several companies where Netscape or Opera just will not work.
Indeed... My reaction to that is to put a nice <form><input type ie sucks></form> on my own pages
;-) hehe ;-) Turnaround is fair-play! -
