And it is this "old-style vector-animated .swf stuff" that will keep Flash Player installed on people's PCs. Ever heard of All Your Base, or Hatt-baby, or Hyakugojyuuichi, or Badgers, or Weebl and Bob, or Homestar Runner? All vector-animated. Newgrounds? Entirely vector-animated until Numa Numa Dance proved the concept of FLV, and the vast majority is still vector-animated thanks to YouTube siphoning off the authors who would have used H.26x or VPx. For example, Hatt-baby is 1 MB, and it'd probably be ten times bigger if rendered and encoded in H.264.

In my school we're currently bringing a computer in every classroom. We spend a lot of money on them but it feels as if this whole project has been initiated to make our school look more modern.
Serously, we got several prices for our "use" of modern technology in school, but in real life nobody uses the PCs (exept the teacher who started all this crap). There is no reason to put computers in classrooms when the teachers don't know how to use them.

I'm looking for an entry level digital 4 or 8 track digital recorder to experiment with in the $500 range.

Ok, Ebay might be the bet here if you're sure you want digital. I haven't done much shopping online for recording gear, so I might be off base, but I haven't seen a self-contained all-digital solution that is halfway decent for under $1100 US in my local music stores.

If you don't have to go digital, you might check your local pawn shops to see if you can find a used 4- or 8- track Tascam. Even the cheapest Tascam recorders were fairly decent-sounding. Depending on how long it's been on the shelf, you might get away for under $100.

Any product recommendations or warnings out there in the geek crowd? Something that uses mp2/mp3 natively a plus!

The biggest warning I can think of is don't bother with anything that uses mp2/mp3 as a native recording format.

I don't know about you, but when I write and record my own music, I don't want a lossy compression codec to remove any of the sound I've worked hard to produce.

If it doesn't have to be portable, get 4 SoundBlaster-16 PCI cards and the cheapest copy of Cubase you can find. The cards should be less than $30 at your local computer store and the el-cheapo version of Cubase should be less than $300.

Once you have that built and in the computer, see if you can find ASIO drivers for the SB cards; Creative doesn't make them but there is at least one free aftermarket (http://come.to/sblive) ASIO driver package. Install those, and you've got a decent-sounding, 16-bit digital recorder.

The 16-bit sound isn't going to give you studio quality mix-downs or anything, but it'll do for just screwing around at home.

Well, if you wan't to have lots of fun, well kinda, try making some of the chemicals you self or using household goods.

Amonia isn't that hard to make,
Ethanol's quite easy too (just don't get caught!)
Acids are a bit trickier.... but not that hard.

It'll give you lots of practice nad help if WW3 breaks out(or if you need any 'added-extras' for a night out).

Things like the anarchists cook book should help point you in the right direction.

As a UQ student, I'm lucky enough to see it once a week. Since its last drop, there's now a big long tail from the drop to the funnel. I imagine that, just like before a drop, the physics staff and students will gather round and place bets on when they think it'll break off. Apparently there is a fair bit of money in it...

And this is just one example of how our Federal Government's massive spending cutbacks on higher education, and the consequent reduction in spending on research, can produce breakthroughs in science. But of course, our biggest breakthrough is our Scramjet program -- NASA's hundreds of millions of dollar and hundreds of brilliant scientists and engineers, we did for A$1.5 million (that's about US$7.84), a couple of basements full of shock-tunnels, some second-hand rockets, and a handful post-grad students.

Finally, seeing as everybody enjoys looking at UQ web cams so much, you can also view FoyerCam, an incentive to make us messy students keep out foyer clean in our computer science building. There's more cams here, but having 2 servers /.ed will probably land me (or somebody else) in a great deal of trouble. And of course, no visit to UQ is complete without a visit to kewn.

A very common misperception about the USA, among Americans and non-Americans alike. An American Citizen (state Citizen) is a sovereign above the federal government and ruled only by other sovereigns, at least until he or she is duped into claiming to be a "US citizen", a status that did not exist prior to 1868. One claims to be a US citizen via birth certificates, Socialist^H^H^H Security Numbers, 1040 Forms, etc. That does mean that almost everyone there is affected, I admit, but there is a way out.

See The DCC Faq for comparanda:

All DCC players and recorders can playback traditional analog cassettes.
All DCC players have music searching capabilities. As far as I know this goes for ACC as well on most recorders and players (it works by searching silences there). On prerecorded cassettes you can search by title and the player will know which side it is on.
DCC equipment is cheaper than DAT or MD. [substitute miniDV or DVD-R)

And of course it included SCMS.

People like DVDs because you don't have to rewind them, you can jump directly to a particular scene (which is, I know, just another way of saying you don't have to rewind them), and they have the same familiar size and shape that CDs have. The hilarious part is that D-VHS is targetting the high-end consumer with titles like X-Men, Independence Day, Die Hard, U-571 and Terminator 1 and 2 - all of them eye candy that, while they may look good on HDTV, are mass-market films.

It's originally an arabic song that somebody has "translated" to Swedish. Not translated, but put swedish words that sound almost the same as the arabic. I don't know any arabic, but the result is really crazy!! "Glue on the piece of ham, funny", when the original meaning is probably something like "I love you my dear" :-)

You may not know that there is a big number of online labels existing, and distributing free mp3s (legal mp3s) on the net.

The existence of those labels makes it easier to find music of your taste:

monotonik -- Highly acclaimed internet label releasing IDM/experimental materials from all around the world. They were showcasing at the recent Ars Electronica.
noise -- Noise is releasing all kinds of fine ambient, techno, drum'n'bass, with always a focus on experimentation and quality. (Some jewels were released there by Stereoman (now esem), Saag...)
theralite -- Since theralite started releasing mp3s their focus got more and more on diversity and quality. Releases are ranging between trip-hop, drum'n'bass and house. (check THERA001 and THERA012 for some very nice trip hop tunes)
tokyodawn -- a label focusing on triphop and drum'n'bass.
tokyo2051 -- sub label of tokyodawn, releasing mainly techno materials.
you also have kahvi collective releasing idm, techno, ambient, milk releasing experimental finnish techno, reaktio...

There are also tons of stuff on mp3.com or vitaminic.

Even laurent garnier's website has some mp3s which were selectionned after a remix competition...

The conclusion is that you can find tons of legal mp3s on the net, (I hardly listen to anything but what I get on the net) It's just a bit harder to find and know about the artists and labels around.. but if you're interested, you will find.

I live in South-Africa, where we also have a a telecomunications monopoly leading to highly expensive internet access, and no talk of broadband - ever. They still like to tell us that ISDN is new and high-tech. Around here there are only one free ISP - who doesn't support connections from Linux (you know the adds type) all the others are really pricey, not to mention terrible prices for local calls. I am not sure how I would feel about a not-for-profit ISP, but I do know that it no such entity could exist in this country. It's high-time I think for the people of countries like ours to begin actively battling (and I don't mean violence) the source of all these problems - state appointer telecomunications monopolies. Even if that means boycotting them at our own expense.

Spending some time looking around sourceforge for interesting projects can be entertaining, but also an excercise in futility.

Certainly, there are a lot of very interesting sounding projects (like this one). But, about 95% of them are in the "planning" stage, 4% are in "pre-alpha" and only 1% actually got somewhere. The most accomplished project I saw was a map viewer/editor for blackisle games.

Anyways I think my point is that posting stories about vaporware someone turns up on sourceforge is a bit silly. For example, have you checked out Arianne RPG since its slashdot debut? About the only thing they got done is a new webpage. That story was posted like 3-5 months ago.

Not 100% accurate. The user might only see com instead of co.uk (or even better to), but ping times to faraway sites are bound to be lower because, for example, light moves only 299.8 km per millisecond. There are groups devoted to preservation of obsolete tech out there. I am a member, I hold on to a pair of 286s, and 386s. These computers though obsolete, are not useless. People need to realize that an XT will do many useful things, but you need to look a little for software. The key advantge of this is you can generally get freeware off the net and it costs yo nothing. These machines are stable too. The only problems I have with my 386s is that they have too little hard drive space for all the apps I want to run. These are some of my of my personal favorite vintage computing sites. Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

Here is the EFF's stance on this case.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

.to is Tonga, but they sold out to V3. .cc is Cocos Islands. There are already .tm sites, e.g. Fuckwits.

Maybe .trademark or something.. but the point is that registration in some TLD somewhere should REQUIRE a registered trademark.

I'll help clarify so a flame war doesn't start: You're not saying that all domains should require a ®, only domains in one TLD. I suggest .r for this TLD; it doesn't conflict with .tm. This fits in with the next suggestion:

Trademarks have a different namespaces for different types of business, so there can be an apple detective agency and an apple computers both with trademarks...

And Apple the record label. Remember when Apple records sued Apple Computer over "entering the recording business" in violation of a trademark license by providing audio input hardware?

There are increasing signs that some of my 1982 predictions about videotex "speech" were accurate. The apparently "trivial" nature of this "flame war" may lead one to dismiss the entire situation as trivial -- but once the court precedent is set, be prepared for all hell to break loose.

It is in the nature of government to do this sort of thing. Governments, like children, really cannot help themselves -- they must be disciplined. The only real question is whether the discipline should involve violence. I don't think it is necessary to resort to violence as long as we use the neocortex to generate signal among the noise and inventions that out-flank the limbic programming of the political animals. If we play an instinctive game of argument or violent confrontation, we're on the turf of the political animals and they win. If, on the other hand, we change reality via technology -- the game is on our turf.

In the mid 80's I was trying to warn libertarian friends of the dangers represented by proprietary de facto standards. In the late 70s, I had been working on an OS for the 8086 before the first silicon was etched by emulating the instruction set on the University of Illinois PLATO Cyber 6600. I went to this extreme precisely because the thought of an OS like MS-DOS dominating the potential of Moore's Law scared me as much as the opportunity of getting filthy rich attracted me. (I was seduced away from this effort by CDC's PLATO project, and then by AT&T/Knight-Ridder's videotex project, either of which would have made Gate's monopoly moot if their potential had been allowed to make it out to the marketplace.)

Now, a career later, I find an annoyingly high frequency of supposedly "libertarian" friends and acquaintances ditching their principles when it comes to exactly one man: Bill Gates. These are the same people who have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get me to read Ayn Rand for years. What would Her-Enlightened-Self-Interestedness have thought of Bill Gates and the "principles" of her followers?
