Conversely, I'm encouraged
As a 32 year old female that needed to do something with her life, I decided to go into Computer Science. So far, I enjoy it and I'm good at it. We'll see when it comes to the actual job market, I suppose. There are a lot of incentives for underrepresented groups when it comes to recruiting for the field, including lower unemployment rates when you graduate. If you look at the raw statistics on the parent article the job numbers are still very encouraging.
The unemployment rate for women under 55 is about 75% of the general female population. While that doubles to 150% for women over 55, I think that there are still enough opportunities out there for the motivated worker. Whether you start teaching, learn new technologies, take a pay cut, or a combination of the three, you're willingness to change will only work to serve you. You can't expect the industry to adapt to you.

Distance from a federal persona?
If the USA has ~60 Fusion centres and a few ~100 trained IT cyber staff per centre, how many long term top quality "10 separate identities" can they deploy?

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9218177/Google_vs._Facebook_by_the_numbers
Say 150 million as a round max US user count with some very basic web 2.0 usage.
Add in airforce, NSA (and friends) via cyber efforts - 10 to x0 sites/bases, a few 100 staff/contractors with the same "10 separate identities"?
How many fake identities for 150 million US users?
Does the math get near the magic 2.5% of East Germany's Stasi ratio to "user" population? -
Re:UEFI doesn't have MBR
Show me a single major PC manufacturer who ships a machine that dual-boots Windows and any non-Microsoft OS.
No, really. Go ahead, I'll wait.
Read what i wrote, i didn't say 'dual-boots', I said 'Linux-based PCs', I also said that they canned the project as in it is no longer running, it's not that hard to read and it's not at all obfuscated so you shouldn't have that much trouble with it. The Dell Ubuntu PCs could dual boot but weren't sold in that configuration, they were sold with just Linux until Dell realized that relatively no-one wanted to buy a PC with Ubuntu pre-installed.
Dell did ship PCs with Ubuntu but dropped it due to it's poor sales performance but they are reportedly bringing it back in the chinese market.
Asus are shipping PCs with Ubuntu Linux as well.
And although they aren't yet, HP have announced plans to include webOS as a boot option on their PCs. -

Major outbreaks? I read of one not to long ago - - - here it is: http://blogs.computerworld.com/14723/no_more_linux_security_bragging_botnet_discovery_worry
You should have said, "Linux is more secure than Windows, and we generally don't worry to much about viruses and other trash." Left at that, your statement would have been good.
Now, don't take this the wrong way. I very strongly dislike Microsoft. You might even say I hate Microsoft. And, I think that Microsoft should have concentrated on security from MSDOS 3.1, instead of waiting til they had cornered the market. But, the minute we forget that we have our own vulnerabilities, then we have effectively given control of Linux to the hackers.
In fact, the average vacuum headed Windows user who migrates to Linux brings his bad habits to LInux. And, his box is only slightly more secure than it was when it was running Windows.

Re: One again IBM.....
Well let us say, just for the sake of argument (and remember these were provided by OEMs trying to get lower prices and refuse upgrades of 7 from XP on netbooks, not to mention I can get pro and will be getting 2 copies for Xmas at $39 student discount and I kinda doubt students buying a single copy get a better deal than someone buying 100,000 copies, don't you?) that you data is correct. Now that is talking about Home Premium for $50, which would make starter at around $25. Now considering on last count the average netbooks has nearly FOURTY pieces of trialware installed (just look how many programs are listed under DeCrappifier if you wish for a citation since the OEMs refuse to publish numbers) you are looking at MOST windows costing $15-$30 after the trialware payback is figured in.
Now lets look at just ONE OEM has to pay for Ubuntu. they have to run their own servers, not cheap, they have to hire a team of developers to roll their own version of Ubuntu, what do a developer with experience in rolling their own distros and writing drivers go for? $100,000 a piece? probably need a dozen to run a distro at minimum, and then you have the returns which of course can't be sold as new and as HP admitted when they were looking to sell at an average of $8 profit per unit it really doesn't take but a handful of returns to equal a giant loss. And when we are talking 400% return rates it isn't hard to figure out which OS isn't worth the effort.
This is why ASUS, the ones who created the whole Linux netbook idea, quit carrying Linux, why Windows slaughtered Linux on netbooks where if Windows pricing made a difference anywhere THAT would be the market, yet the ALL abandoned Linux completely.
It is just simple common sense. Ask yourself just ONE single question...If Linux is so great and could save OEMs money then why aren't ANY of them using it? dell hides a handful of Ubuntu machines in the back, basically to get one more checkbox on their bulletpoint list, and the rest don't do even that, why? do you HONESTLY think it is some fast conspiracy to keep your miracle free OS away from the masses? Why isn't any of the little shops like mine using it to undercut competitors?
Because the sad and nasty truth that NO amount of mod points can EVER erase, nor can that one FOSSie going around claiming everyone that doesn't kiss Linus' booty MUST be APK ever change, is this simple truth, which is Linux is free only if your time is worthless and for the OEM frankly MSFT could double their prices and they STILL won't take your OS, because in the end it would cost MORE money. more money to fix broken drivers, more money to deal with the complaints, more money to run their own repos because the default one breaks more than it fixes.
here is a nice article I found several years ago and I hope that you read it. it is a perfect explanation, better than i could EVER write, of why Linux isn't going anywhere. But instead of addressing the problems outlined the "community" will just fling insults like monkeys flinging poo and proclaim their superiority. well I suppose being the biggest failure is still being the biggest at SOMETHING, not sure if I'd brag about it though.
-
Re:Yay
And yet again multiple sources ask for citation and all you can do is fling shit like a monkey. Tell me something, how does it feel to be in absolute last place with NO hope of ever getting better? Is it one of those sad stories, where with no friends you turn to something that is unpopular like you are in the hope you'll have something in common? is it that you simply have nothing better to do on weekends besides read man pages so knowing how to "kinda sorta" copypasta makes you have a warm fuzzy feeling? does using a loser in the market somehow justify your own loser state? please tell i bet its an interesting story, probably involves bullying and child abuse. BTW enjoy some failure, just to make you feel at home.
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! you think I can get better QA than the third largest OEM on the planet? What, you expect me to tell paying customers "Go to the forum, kiss some loser ass, and maybe, just maybe, in a few days someone will have mercy and give you a big pile of bullshit that may or may not make your sound work again"?
Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses
.You see you whiny little delusional mama's boy, I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retailer that still believes. I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than douchebags like you that will happily take a cock slapping from linus as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.
So you go hide now mama's boy, you hide with your Tux blankie and keep saying your magical nigger nigger faggot, or should I say shill shill astroturfer, like it is a magical word that will make all the bad go away. But it won't change reality and the reality is your driver model is shit and more than 15 years behind everyone else and that is why retailers like me wouldn't piss on it, not some mythical money truck that sneaks up to my door in the middle of the night. So go compile something and leave the men to talk about the real world, okay little girl?

Re:MICROSOFT VERSUS LINUX: FIGHT!
Oh please, they are making money hand over fist, getting paid for the majority of Android handsets AND their own WinPhones, and the case will take YEARS which is years of check cashing. Meanwhile you still think half a sentence proves...you can't copypasta? It doesn't surprise me, living in CLI copypasta is probably all you do anymore and you fail at even that. Perhaps you'd like some links on Linux getting pwned and failing, yes? Just to brighten you day? Maybe you can use a Daemon to download the pages and read them in an email client, just like your beloved RMS does. How sad though that you HONESTLY believe your OS, which BTW you STILL can't fucking update without the damned thing breaking, has a shot. remember what your numbers are?
Get ready, here they come! Kinda makes that koolaid just a little bitter now, don't it? I believe in using the best tool for the job, but to say Linux is secure or better than any other complex OS is frankly bullshit. Hell I was talking to a 15 year Linux admin on one of the other sites that had gotten so sick of Linux desktop fuckups they were going to BSD and if THAT didn't "just work" they were gonna wash their hands of FLOSS on the desktop and just go Mac.
BTW if you'd like a little more food for thought, what OS was 3 of the 4 CAs running that were compromised? take a look and see. Maybe they just had bad configs? Surely someone with knowledge would be safe right? Guess again and its not a fluke by any means.
And of course on the retail side you have a decade old Windows beating the shit out of Linux on netbooks proving that your latest and greatest couldn't even compete with a decade old OS,ASUS has given up on your bullshit, remember them? The ones that actually STARTED the whole netbook thing with Linux? And you can't even keep them! Or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Linux isn't planned it grows like a virus!, yeah that would be an STD and explain why you are still a decade behind on the driver front. Oh and when you respond with your usual bullshit and lame excuses could you please go here so we can see which lameness you are gonna use? The current most popular are "use esoteric workarounds" which is ALWAYS popular in Linux land, and "It works for me!" because you neglect to mention the weekend you waste every 6 months to make that statement true.
Oh and in case anyone is curious about the half of the sentence that makes him wet himself in fear the complete sentence is as far as the user is concerned there is NO command line in windows which of course is 100% true, because their OS simply doesn't need it. Here is another sentence for him to fear BTW Linux IS Windows 98, no more, no less because what was

What I really love is that Mozilla wants to hide the version number from the end user.
They backed off on that, thankfully.
I'm fucking GOB SMACKED that those sanctimonious pricks backed off anything. Fuck 'em, fuck their awful bar (awesome my left nut), fuck changing version numbers every 5 minutes, fuck breaking addons, fuck removing status bar, fuck deleting http:/// from the URL bar and most of all FUCK 'EM for making me love their browser and then ruining it with their arrogance and posturing. At home my upgrade from 3.6 looks like it will be to Opera. I'm done with being arse raped with their stupidity. Their software might be free but my time trying to fix broken addons, time to fix browsers that become unstable due to enabling incompatible addons, and to find new addons that bring back functionality they ripped out - that time is not free. That is time out of my life their DICKING AROUND costs me. FUCK MOZILLA!!!

Re:Sucks to be you!
Unemployment rates widely differ between those with college degrees and those with only high school degrees. See here, for example Oct 2010 9.2% vs 4.5%. Of course, a discrepancy has always existed, even back in the boom times. Its even a bigger discrepancy with tech and non-tech. Many technical and scientific fields have unemployment rates lower than the national average, due to difficulty and education requirements. Some political types like Mitt Romney see this as a problem and want unemployment in the tech fields to climb.

Re:Waiting for MS to underbid
Actually I just like pointing out that retards like you have taken over the Linux community and are frankly doing a better job of making sure Linux goes nowhere than MSFT could ever DREAM of doing, I mean I can give plenty of proof of the uberfails, such as Dell having to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? yet do you have enough sense to LEARN from your mistakes? To ask "What are we doing wrong that the competition is doing right"? Of course not, hell you can't even copypasta correctly! Instead you'll scream "They are noobs, we're leet!" while whacking off to the latest bash handbook.
Yet here you are, being given gift after gift by the competition and what do you do? scream "I'm leet!" and shoot yourselves in the face while whacking off to a bash script, I mean you aren't even smart enough to copypasta a single sentence correctly yet to expect the masses to sit around and copypasta pages of CLI mess? And you wonder why you are dead fucking last? Hell you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses. Have you seen that site? It is a WHOLE SITE dedicated to NOTHING but laughing at you and your kind and you know what? Its pretty damned funny!
So please go ahead, i consider it a wonderful chance to educate people on what pathetic failure losers like you have caused the community as a whole. Once upon a time they were making progress, but now there is nothing left of the community but pathetic fat losers like yourself that somehow thinks being able to copypasta into a term somehow makes you "better" than everyone else and that it is your duty to run off the "noobs" but you know what? You are just shooting yourselves in the face, making sure Linux NEVER gains any share, the hardware OEMs won't support you, and that mainstream users treat your OS like toxic waste, and i find that quite hilarious.
MILLIONS of manhours dedicated to linux, TWENTY YEARS of hard work, what do you have to show? you are less than the margin for error, and in large part it is due to douchebags like you that make Linux look like the home of fat losers and trolls. Bravo sir, MSFT couldn't ask for a better useful idiot than yourself. You really should ask them to pay you, after all the village idiot used to get coins thrown at him, didn't he?

Re:No longer a monopoly
Notice I got modded down and will CONTINUE to get modded down for at least two days in unrelated subjects? This is what I find funny about the teabagger wing of the FOSSies, they think by burying anything that isn't "Gee isn't Linux perfect for the world? Why it sure is Skip, and RMS's farts smells like roses and cure AGW!" they can magically "make it not true! make it all go away, I can't hear you la la la!".
But the funny thing about the truth, one can always produce facts to back it up. Like how Dell have to run their own repos because the current driver model is so fucked up that if they dare to run the default repos the machines will shit all over themselves. not opinion, cold hard fact. How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks which should tell you something, when people would rather have a decade old fisher price GUI than the latest and greatest because its too fiddly and a PITA, or how about how the ones that invented the netbook ASUS has given up on the bullshit? I would bet my last dollar their support costs were THROUGH THE ROOF because of "update foo broke my stuff!" along with having to try to walk someone through a three page CLI "fix" over the phone. I bet the metrics on the calls were just nuts, or how about the kings of "low price at all costs" Walmart running away from Linux as fast as it can which again I bet my last dollar the support costs killed it. don't see that with the iShiny, even though that is about as unfamiliar a UI as you could get for a lifelong Windows user you do you? Maybe because they make it intuitive and easy instead of flipping the user the bird and typing "RTFM Windblowz Luserz LOL!"? How about how the community has the nerve to actually CELEBRATE 1% market share like that is something to be proud of when IRL after TWENTY YEARS of work Linux is actually lower than JavaME and the craziness and logic hoop jumping by the lunatic fringe has gotten so bad there is actually a website that turns the bullshit and excuses into memes which you then see once you know what to look for over and over AND OVER again.
You see, that is the thing about the truth, they can call me "nigger cocksucker faggot" all day long, aka shill troll astroturfer but you know what? It doesn't make black into white, up into down, nor can it change a single number or add a single user to the crazy parade. We retailers have been fucking BEGGING you to straighten your shit and give us some real choice, we have practically DRAWN YOU A MAP and handed you a GPS to keep you from getting off track, and now the competition is gonna give you a fricking 60 yard head start in the hundred meters by shooting itself in the foot TWICE with the fucked Windows 8 GUI and all those late model P4s and early dual cores being EOLed that could play farmville and run FB just fine.
NEVER BEFORE IN HISTORY has so much been in your favor, your competition is run by an idiot, now more than ever before the world is doing more and more of their work and play exclusively online, and the visionary behind the second front has died and left a vacuum that they may not be able to fill. Oh and the economy sucks so folks want to save money and are willing to try things that will help them do so. You have the market wide open, the field is yours, so what do you do? say "Don't look at me!" and promptly start waving a gun around the track while masturbating to a Bash script.
But you've run out of exc

Re:About time
Nice answer fucknuts, no proof, not even any experience with the product, just "nu uh!". And this is from an idiot that doesn't even know how to quote correctly so what should anyone expect?
Now let us see what he is AFRAID TO SHOW YOU because it is the TRUTH. The CORRECT quote is "As far as the user is concerned there is NO CLI in windows" and I DARE anyone to prove me wrong. walk up to 100 people in the street and ask them "How do you call up command line in Windows" and you know what you are gonna get? "Whats a command line" Because windows DON'T NEED A SHITTY TERMINAL just to do the tasks 99.995% of the population does. Linux? Puts the terminal on the desktop, why? Because YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. Its a SERVER OS that has been BADLY hacked to pretend to be a desktop OS, but in the end? Its ALL CLI. Here fucknuts, enjoy your fail...

Unix timeline
Dennis Ritchie had an impact on the technology world FAR beyond what Jobs and Apple could ever dream of...or how many hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Unix-derived systems are running?
It becomes more obvious when you look at all the derivatives that have come to be. A Unix timeline is a good way to visualize it and the Levenez Unix timeline shows the highlights of the last 40+ years. It gives a good idea of how much amazing activity there has been.

Considering you're the dipshit that can't even quote correctly? Glass houses and all that. at least have the balls to use the correct quote which is "As far as the users are concerned there is no command line in Windows" and I fucking dare you to prove me wrong. Walk up to the next 100 people on the street and ask them dipshit, ask them "How do you get the command line in Windows?" and you know what they'll say? "what's command line?" because nobody uses that shit in windows dumbass, nobody.
But hey, if you want to be IN DENIAL that your OS doesn't fucking work without a 70s era term, that companies like Dell have to run their own repos even though they only offer Linux on a teeny tiny subset of hardware because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos (quality OS you got there friend), that your brand new OS got its ass beat by a decade old OS on netbooks, that major retailers like Walmart are running away from Linux as fast as it can and that even the company that started netbooks with Linux have given up on your CLI heavy bullshit, or that there is even a site dedicated To your bullshit and excuses? Who am I to deny you your illusion?
Now you be sure to tell us how its all a conspiracy of Gates and the Illuminati, that anyone who isn't sucking the koolaid must be a "sekret M$ Ninja!" getting paid the big bux to keep your magical OS down, that if folks would just heed the great RMS the world would be flowers and ponies. it couldn't be that NOBODY WANTS TO GO BACK TO THE 70s! Nope, folks love punch cards and PDPs! CLI makes your neckbeard thick and gives you gonad powerz!
Kinda funny how the ONLY success Linux has seen is Android, which google took away from the community huh? and what IS Android? Why its all GUI, no CLI, all clicky clicky wonderful, that's what it is! So have the balls to quote me correctly or are you afraid I'm right?

The parent post is from Alex Belits, a jobless Linux astroturfer. Last time he submitted his resume to anyone was when he tried to be Linus Torvalds bootlicker and was turned down for drool.
See how nicely that fits there loony tunes? Oh and I'm not working for anyone but myself, I am your worst nightmare...I'm a retailer. you see we have tried your product and found your bullshit and lies to be just that so maybe you'd like me to enlighten some of the masses, hmm?,

Fastest cellular connection seen to date?
Downloads over the AT&T network averaged about 24Mbps and peaked at 42.85Mbps, the fastest cellular connection seen to date.
The first mention I found of an actual download speed for the LTE network in Stockholm (you know, the world's first publicly available LTE-service) beats that figure easily, peaking at 59.1 Mb/s. That is a measurement from over a year ago.

Innovation
What we need is innovation, which of course will lead to higher wages for all and higher tax revenues. To do this we need to bring in a million or so workers from "traditional" cultures on visas, because as we all know traditional people are the most innovative!. What fool can't see this? Vote for Mitt!

Re:Of course not
Of course it's not. Not only is it not free in the RMS sense of the world, withholding source is not the openness Google always claimed it was promoting.
However it is still the most open out there, or like Stallman said the less bad. In fact the last time I checked gnu.org had an article about Android Development on its first page. Perhaps Android is not free as the GNU project would like, perhaps Google is not good as someone likes to think, but the remaining is far worse: MS and Apple are a nightmare, Novell, Oracle and all the other big players are pretty bad.
The only reason it got so much support from techies is because it runs on Linux, and Google's PR department convinced them that it represented the usual unrealistic OSS fantasies about free ecosystems.
No, it got so much support because everyone can write and release an application for it. Not only that, everyone can write and release an application for Android using free software and free software libraries.
Apple is still the #1 smartphone vendor
No. There's a "still" too much. Apple became the number 1 just in the last quarter when it took over Nokia, thanks Microsoft for this. However it's a head to head with Samsung, which is growing much faster (thanks to Android by the way), so it could be a very short lived lead.
and iOS the #1 mobile operating system counting iPads, iPhones, and iPods.
[citation needed], in the smartphone market Android is selling 2.5 times iOS. I smell bullshit here:
Q3 2011 (millions)
iPad 9.25
iPhone 20.34
iPod 7.54
---------iOs total 37.13
Android smartphones ~50
But probably you have got some secret figures that show heavy negative sales for android tablets... -
Re:My description of SFD
Welcome brother! Coffee and donuts are in the back and I'll be giving a lecture on "How to never be hit by the scourge of WinRot" at 2PM, be sure to catch it. For those that won't be there the correct answer is "TuneUp Utilities" which will kill WinRot dead.
And I'm sure to get hate for pointing this out, but who gives a crap, I got more Karma than God. You wanna know why Linux is stuck a a lousy 1%, even lower than a Java based phone OS? Its actually VERY simple and easy to explain, and no, it isn't some conspiracy by Gates and the Illuminati, they are too busy using the World bank to take over the planet.
It is because YOU DON'T LISTEN, neither to consumers nor to the world at large. Haven't you gotten the memo? the word is CONSUMERS in 50 foot flaming neon, so what do you do? "Hey lets put a link to bash on the desktop! It'll make our neckbeards thick and copypasta in a terminal makes you leet!". it is like the way RMS still calls everyone "hackers" like he is at a computer club in 79, it isn't even funny anymore, its just.....kinda sad, that's what it is.
In case you haven't gotten the memo THE WORLD IS GUI NOW and NOBODY, but nobody, well except for server admins, use terms for anything anymore. Do you see a terminal link on the desktop of Windows 7? Nope you got to go to start...all programs... accessories...and there it is, buried as far down as they can because NOBODY USES IT. Oh and before anyone wastes their time pointing out Powershell look it up on MSDN, the articles are ALL "How to manage YOUR SERVER with Powershell" because it ain't for consumers folks! hell look at the closest thing Linux has ever had to a hit, Android. What is it? Why its all GUI, no CLI, clicky clicky GUI city!
You've got this great OS, with tons of software, all free, nice looking DEs, all this wonderful stuff, yet your stubborn refusal to wake up and smell the 21st century is dooming it to a niche OS so tiny Java craphones kick its ass. If there is ANY CLI then YOU HAVE FAILED. if the one and ONLY answer is "open up bash and type"? Then YOU HAVE FAILED. hell look at the biggest weakness Linux has right now, driver issues. Do you have a simple "roll back drivers" button? How about a "find drivers" button, both of which your competitor has had for years? NOPE, all you have is "open up bash and type" which as I pointed out was fail.
Do you know what the definition of insanity is? Its doing the same thing over and ov er and expecting a different result. you've had 20 damned years folks, you are STILL dead last. Doesn't that give you a clue? How about the fact that a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks? LISTEN TO THE CONSUMERS and change, or stay last place. because you will NEVER get them to join in the forum dance, you will NEVER get them to "open up bash and type" and you will NEVER get them to "embrace the power of CLI" like its the damned force, okay? Is that REALLY so hard to understand? Hell even on servers Windows is winning at a 70%/30% split. Why is that? simple, as a Linux admin told me "Linux is powerful if you know EXACTLY what you need to do and the steps to do it. Windows is quicker if you are given a task where you've never had to do it before" why? Because GUIs are intuitive and reward exploration, and CLIs give you a blinking cursor and a shitload of man pages, that's why!
Its just human nature folks, humans are visually oriented creatures that like to touch and explore. GUIs enhance and appeal to these parts of our nature. CLIs are about as UNINTUITIVE an interface as you could possibly design and the only reward you'll get for exploring is frustration or breaking something, this is why they fell out of favor for EVERYONE BUT YOU. But hanging onto a terminal like Disco Stu hanging onto his bell bottoms won't make the term come back, hell bell bottoms will come back first .

Re:Hey, big things have started this way
Oops, it seems I've woken up a delusional Linux zealot Sorry
/.. At least he's very amusing. See how nicely that fits? Oh if I wanted I could smack your ass around with the truth all day long, you see that is the nice thing about reality, you have the truth on your side, how about a teeny tiny taste? How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of the latest Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses
.Now right there is a ton of links showing WHAT I HAVE SAID IS TRUE now can YOU do the same? Why no, instead you'll go "La la la I can't hear you, CLI gives me gonad powers and copypasta into a 70s term makes me leet! You must be an M$ Ninja!"
Now accept you are WRONG AND FULL OF SHIT and move on kid. Nobody cares or uses CLI or start>run in Windows except guys that ran DOS and have a raging case of nostalgia. Your OS CANNOT RUN WITHOUT CLI and frankly wouldn't last even a day without one in most cases.
I repeat, do you know what the definition of insanity is? Because here it is, 2011, and as I politely gave you the link to your numbers are worse than a shitty Java phone OS and the numbers don't lie. How big of a damned clue bat does someone have to smack you with before you accept that NOBODY WANTS CLI BUT NECKBEARDS and that a good 99.999998% of the population is NOT NECKBEARDS.
Accept it, give the customer what they want, or watch as they ignore your CLI heavy fiddly little mess. You see, that is the nice thing about a free market, we are free to NOT TAKE YOUR OS if it sucks or doesn't behave the way we want it to. you hang onto your CLI like a Tux blankie and see where your OS is in 5 years, because I'll tell you EXACTLY where it'll be in 5 years if you don't change....less than the margin for error, just where it is now and has been FOR TWENTY DAMNED YEARS NOW.
I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retailer that still believes. I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than elitist douchebags like you that will happily take a broken worthless garbage as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.

Re:oh shit!
See my post here:
http://news.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2412564&cid=37307402
Or enjoy reading through things like this, of which Google searches will turn up many:
http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/07/andrew-orlowski-is-a-hack/
http://paulfwalsh.com/why-andrew-orlowski-from-the-register-is-a-twat/

http://ktetch.blogspot.com/2011/05/andrew-orlowski-drunk-unethical-or-just.html
But ignoring Andrew Orlowski there's countless issues with their other authors too. Lewis Page is more reasonable in allowing dissenting comment in response to his articles, but his articles are time and time again completely ignorant. He for example often criticises British defence projects citing American options as being much cheaper by pure monetary, but despite having it pointed out to him time and time again he fails to realise that a $10bn UK defence project for say, some new helicopters is still cheaper than buying the helicopters for $8bn from the US, when the UK project brings back $5bn in eventual tax, whereas the $8bn US project it's just money straight out the British economy.
Another example is the Eurofighter typhoons ground attack capabilities- he constantly derides the project because it wont have proper air to ground capabilities until 2020, but he's wrong because it wont have proper bombing capabilities until then- it's had Brimstone missiles added to it throughout this year. He ignores AGMs and focusses on bombing capability and then extrapolates that to say it can't do air to ground at all until 2020. This is complete and utter outright FUD.
He's similarly criticised the armament of Type 45 destroyers, claiming they only have two weapons or similarly, but a quick look on the Royal Navy's own website and the specs of the ships confirmed that yet again, he's completely wrong.
You can see this pattern with most of their staff- their articles are just often outright false. Where they're not false, they completely miss fundamental points. Where they don't miss fundamental points, they just outright lie.
So that's really why they have the reputation- they're just too agenda based. Their writers all vehemently pursue their own political agendas without care for facts, without care for reason, and worst of all- without care for the truth. That's not journalism, that's propaganda.

Re:Wow, that's terrible
At least according to what I've read, they make money on that division. Not great margins (5% or so), but they made money and in volume it adds up.
Computerworld writes: "The hardware business is by far HP's least profitable segment, with an operating margin of 5.9%. Excluding financial services (at 9.4%), every other HP business segment's margin was in double digits last quarter."
... So it's hardly a "profit center" and who knows what kind of outlook they had for it, perhaps they expected losses soon. -
What's in It for Developers?
Well going by previous statements by Larry Ellison and Oracles actions in regards to Red Hat Linux. They'll wait until your stuff is popular and then just take it and start charging support fees for your stuff.

Re:There will be a time...
I don't think people realize how much that web advertising drives Google. If you look at their financial reports, it's the majority of their revenue. They're not so much an IT company as they are an advertising company that happens to use IT.
This is also why you get things like Google refusing to implement the Do Not Track feature in Chrome as well as the absence of anonymity on Plus.

So lets see, your response is...suckup suckup suckup, bullshit bullshit bullshit and finally "Fight teh powerz!" am I right? Sum it up?
I don't give a shit if in 1979 he invented the fucking takeout pizza okay? WTF does what he did in the past matter now? does that give him a "be a douchebag free" card? I guess it does as far as you're concerned.
And what are you fucking smoking? What corp in their right mind would be running 16 bit apps nearly 15 YEARS after support ended? Security hole much? hell why not just put some Win98 machines on the network while you're at it. Anybody who actually needs code THAT old has these wonderful things called "VMs" maybe you've heard of them? because nobody in their right mind is gonna let a gaping security hole like 16 bit crapola run on a modern desktop. Oh and how does that 16bit code run on 64bit Linux? Oh that's right IT DON'T.
And I'm about as jealous of Linus dumbass Torvalds as I am of any other cult figure, that is NOT AT ALL. If anything all I feel is pity, pity that otherwise sane people (I assume you're sane, can't tell by your post) would bend over backwards to kiss his ass and take the big steaming turds he hands you and say "Please sir, can I sniff your asshole?". FACT-It has been TWENTY YEARS and Linux is NO FURTHER on the desktop than when it started 20 YEARS AGO. FACT- OSX, BSD, Windows, hell even OS/2 have an ABI and guess what? the DRIVERS WORK which is more than can be said for Linux. But why am I wasting my breath, maybe you'd enjoy some nice copypasta where I point out what a TOTAL FAILURE LINUX IS? As for why it pisses me off, it pisses me off because it COULD be good, if it weren't for assholes like Torvalds and suckups like you. Enjoy

Re:Unlimited 'til it's not
Took a while but I found the contradicting statements (I'm sure there are plenty more). I quit AT&T U-verse because of the data caps. I was happy with the service and didn't mind paying a bit more for stability versus cable. And yet every time I read about their shenanigans, I get that much more fired up!
So what do customers like again AT&T? Or is the next infallible survey going to be that we would prefer to sign over all bank accounts, stock, and even our first born to you as well? Mark my words AT&T, your time of corruption is coming to a close. Someone will leap frog you before you know it... and I will be first in line to greet them with open arms. In the meantime, raise some hell and file a complaint with the FCC.
Unlimited texts
AT&T: "The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers," AT&T said in a statement today as explanation.

Broken by Microsoft??
If you choose to believe some of the articles, it was Microsoft who "broke" this encryption algorithm.
However, if you read the actual research paper the first page explicitly explains the relation between Microsoft and the researchers as "The authors were visiting Microsoft Research Redmond while working on these results."

You can also query Secunia for vulnerabilities. With the new version number scheme and ultra-fast previous versions retirement (where you are left vulnerable if you don't upgrade immediately), you'll have to grok the numbers somewhat. Basically count the *unique* CVEs affecting all FF versions since -say FF3.5. Do the same for IE8&9. You will not like the result.
Firefox is the only major browser that openly reports vulnerabilities so of course it is going to have the highest publicly countable number.
BS. All the major vendors are obligated to report vulnerabilities through Mitre. All browser vulnerabilities are assigned unique CVEs.
And even if you had an accurate count of known vulnerabilities from the other vendors, known vulnerabilities hardly equates to total vulnerabilities, even less so when every vulnerability is counted as equal to every other one.
If you consider a set of browsers which must be assumes to receive an equal amount of scrutiny (IE,FF,Chrome), if one browser year after year comes out with most vulnerabilities, surely that does say something about code quality.

More info
From ComputerWorld: "SpyEye is a particularly nasty piece of malicious software: it can harvest credentials for online accounts and also initiate transactions as a person is logged into their account, literally making it possible to watch their bank balance drop by the second."
The malware kit is normally sold to criminals, with each sold copy protected by an encryption scheme of some kind. This encryption scheme was cracked and the source code also released, so anyone can now freely compile the software. The malware also uses a botnet to perform transactions using compromised banking credentials. It's not clear if the hack also enables one to setup or control the botnet aspect. However, one could presumably make use of the capability to directly initiate transactions on the victim's computer.
And to think I just got all my online accounts linked together to make my life easier!
