Re:Vast Right Wing Conspiracy
It was perfectly valid for Slashdot to point out the absence of Abu Ghirab photos in Google's image index, and to QUESTION if this was intentional censorship.
If anything, news sources viewed by large numbers of the public are too fearful in reporting stories that have any hint of conspiracy.
Understanding the world we live in, and the cause-effect relations between events, requires we form theories, and then test and modify these theories in the light of new evidence.
Sometimes the best theory is a conspiracy theory. You'll want some examples.
First, there are striking similarities between plans drawn up by a neo-conservative cabal in 1998, the events of 9/11, and America's subsequent invasion of Iraq. The story reported by ABC may have disappeared from the internet, but is still available from the internet archive . You can find tons of stories about this possible connection in the indy-media on the internet. Whether you buy it or not, I think it's worthwhile to keep this theory in mind, and evaluate its plausibility as new events either fit it or do not.
Secondly, it looks like there was systematic vote fraud in the 2004 election, in favor of the Republicans. This hasn't been reported by the mainstream media at all. Here is a summary and screenshots showing how the practice of "weighting" election exit poll data to match offical vote tallys changed the exit poll result in Ohio.
Conspiracy theories have been given an undeserved bad reputation. The term "conspiracy theorist" is being used in a campaign of name-calling to lower the discourse in public forums to the intellectual level of the nursery school playground. It is an attempt by powerful interest groups to keep the public uninformed. -

Re:YOU LOST. NOW BACK OFFNow that the voters in this country have soundly rejected the leftist agenda,
Correction : that should read
:
Now that the electronic voting machines in this country have soundly rejected the leftist agenda, -
Nope, Bill and Hillary want him to stay...
...because he's one of their guys. And is there any real doubt that Hillary isn't the Democratic frontrunner for 2008 now? The joke in Iowa is that she was seen condo-shopping in the state.
I think he's a disaster for the Dems, so as a Republican, I obviously want him to stay. But the REAL verdict on McAullife comes in 2008. If Hillary wins, he stays a party power broker. If Hillary loses, THEN you'll see a massive shakeup in the Democratic Party. That year will be the moment of truth; who should control the Democratic agenda? The Clinton gang, or the newly emergent Howard Dean-style hardliners that inhabit the likes of Democratic Underground? That election will tell the tale. -
Last gasp, or valid concern?
According to an interesting thread over at democraticunderground.com, some pecular findings have come up from comparing exit polls and election results. According to the thread, several swing states and every state using e-voting without a paper trail (which has previously been shown to be vulnerable to tampering) showed a ~5 point disparity towards Bush. In every state which used e-voting with a paper trail, the election results matched the exit polls.
Considering the source, though, I'm taking this with a very large grain of salt, particularly because some peculiarities were hinted at in the exit polls themselves. -
Democratic Underground
It is just me or is slashdot politics sounding awful similar to Democratic Underground.
The shrill nature of the allegations and insinuations are just laughable against President Bush. -
In defense of ideological uniformity
It's useful right now - look at how conservative bloggers were able to take down CBS news. No matter what you may think of the story, there's no question the memos were forged, and ineptly at that. This story would not have broken without the bloggers.
There is actually enough controversy between people nominally on the same side in sites like Free Republic (right) and Democratic Underground (left) to create effective debates. As a conservative site, Free Republic contains material of all kinds (from The Nation to National Review), and the conservatives who debate range from libertarians to fundamentalists. Democratic Underground is much smaller and ironically has much less tolerance of opposing views than Free Republic. Both sites will delete blatant trolls within seconds, but someone called Liberal Larry has survived on FR for years. He's civil, so he survives. In contrast, I wrote civil messages on DU which people seemed to enjoy responding to and I was deleted simply because I wasn't a liberal. I don't think that would have happened on FR.
A major reason for the emergence of liberal and conservative enclaves is that liberals and conservatives are pretty darn nasty when put in the same web site together, and as a result very little productive discussion actually occurs. This is unfortunate but true.
It's interesting that Slashdot has developed into essentially a liberal ghetto because intelligent conservative posts are moderated down. I have seen this happen to many of my posts, to the extent that I feel unwelcome. As a result, I don't post nearly as much as I did when the section was originally opened.

Re:Captain Obvious Strikes Again…
I agree there are problems with not having a paper trail, but I urge everyone to not buy into the panic created by this scam artist...according to her there is no need to vote since it won't count anyway. Most legitimate organizations fighting against these machines distance themselves from her conspiracy nutjob fantasies. If you want to get involved, contact your local representatives and stay away from the internet "activists". She's not the savior of the voting Democrats, she's admittedly neither a voter nor a Democrat and yes, she certainly IS trying to make money from all of this.
Bev Harris (aka BJ Dudley) is a "literary publicist" who steals money from her clients and does not do the work(1). An "author" who uses other people's work and claims it as her own and whose idea of solid evidence in her "book" is pasting something she sees written anonymously on an internet message board(2). A master at figuring out ways to profit from other people's hysteria, she'll tattoo a "donate here" button on her forehead if she thinks it will get her a buck(see her website). A stalker who brags about hiding in the bushes with her pal Andy and a tape recorder to harrass various voting machine company employees(3). A litigation-happy work-avoiding scam artist who is constantly looking for a way to sue someone (ANYONE) to get rich (or at least get some attention) and drag herself out of her overweight-aging-bored housewife lifestyle(4). A liar, a thief, and suffering from severe paranoia (mostly due to the fact that she is constantly screwing over her friends and associates), she has a history of accusing members of her own BBV movement of betraying her during amusing meltdowns on public internet message boards(5)(8)(10)(11).
Her most blatant attempt of profit oriented sleaziness to date has been filing a 'Qui Tam' lawsuit against Diebold in a state she doesn't live in (CA) while simultaneously accusing (and viciously attacking) everyone in her early organization of doing the same and pronouncing a Qui Tam as something she wouldn't "soil herself" with(6)(7)(9).
Before deciding to "investigate" Diebold and riling up the extreme liberal internet message boards to fund her "work avoidance" lifestyle, Bev tried to make money from the sex scandal surrounding Bill Clinton. I give you, the Clinton Cigar presented by Bev Harris:

GWB != JFK
Give me a break. The president's speech was ripped from the history books and was borrowed from JFK's famous "moon speech". GWB's Mars speech was nothing more than spin and diversion to take our attention off the war in Iraq, crappy economy, gay marriage, and war profiteering being done Haliburton, the company where Cheney was the ex-CEO.
If the Mars mission would have failed, there never would have been speech. However, check out the shocking pictures from the rover. Looks like the corporations have already taken over Mars too. -
alternative news is alive on the net
Here are some great sources for news online:
Financial Times - FT a good example of actual "news reporting" (as opposed to "news creating" exhibited by most companies). As a result of the commercial influence in all aspects of society nowadays, it makes perfect sense that some of the financial news sources may now be the most objective source of information. Check out this wonderful site and newspaper.
PR Watch - This site is run by the Center for Media & Democracy is a nonprofit, public interest organization funded by individuals and nonprofit foundations and dedicated to investigative reporting on the public relations industry. The Center serves citizens, journalists and researchers seeking to recognize and combat manipulative and misleading PR practices. There is an excellent weekly newsletter you can subscribe to from this site which summarizes news stories and special issues where media coverage was manipulated.
Disinfopedia - a collaborative project to produce a directory of public relations firms, think tanks, industry-funded organizations and industry-friendly experts that work to influence public opinion and public policy on behalf of corporations, governments and special interests. More than 2500 articles outlining information and credentials on key individuals and entities involved with public policy and other areas. This is a great resource to look up the history of people in the news.
Link TV - The first national network offering a global perspective on news, current events and culture, presenting viewpoints seldom covered in the U.S. media. We present first-run documentaries on global issues, current affairs series, international news, classic foreign feature films, and the best of world music. Link TV's programming, combined with innovative use of two-way digital link-ups and our participatory web site, deepens audience engagement and encourages active participation. If you have DirecTV, this network is channel 375 - ask your cable provider if they do not make this network available - it's worth it!
Democratic Underground - What has turned out to be a polarized web site has become a watchdog for the mainstream media, the Democratic Underground exposes the hypocrisy and sleaziness in the media. Check this site out folks -- with references (something you do not find on conservative sites)
CorpWatch - A great site for information on the nefarious activities of multinational corporations. Want to find out who's paid off whom? Which governments are under the influence of which corporations? Little-known corporate relationships that explain unusual social or political events? This is the site to check.
Adbusters - In our society it has become increasingly difficult to separate editorial from advertising and many argue there is no longer a distinction. This site addresses the social changes in how people are educated by addressing the impact of news and the advertising media and exposes the propaganda campaigns. Very good reading, and in many cases, shockingly thought-provoking!
Common Dreams News Center - Billed as "Breaking news & views for the Progressive community",
this site endeavors to carry stories that the mainstream media may either not be reporting, or not telling all sides.
Canadian Broadcast Corporation - Canada's state-owned news service is widely regarded as one of the most objective sources of information.
Independent Media Center - A good source for news stories that the mainstream doesn't pick up. This site is particularly sensitive to the influence corporate America has over what is and is -

And what's revolting is the cheering of US failureIt's more important to liberals/progressives/leftists to win a power struggle over how the US will spend a few tenths of a percent of its GDP than it is to remove a despot from power who at the absolute minimum gassed his own populace, invaded several sovereign countries, and lorded over the torture and murder of several hundred thousand innocents - including whole families with children, infants, and babies. And that's the minimum he did. If you listen to Saddam's worst critics he organized and trained the folks responsible to 9/11 and had lots of WMD.
Those that cheer Saddam's late "successes" that are nothing more than terrorist attacks that murder tens of Iraqis just to wound a handful of US troops are sick and utterly revolting. Just head on over to Democratic Underground and read the shite they're spewing:

That's fine... free speech and all that... but it shouldn't surprise you that some slashdotters disagree with your cheap political shot at the Republican party as only growing because they are recruiting racists, homophobes, etc.
This is not the website you were looking for... Perhaps this is what you had in mind...

Trademark Idiocy Edition
If you're looking for conservative idiocy, the
ten listed below are trademark specimens. Jeb
Bush (1) tries to make it illegal to criticize him
during an election year, Rush Limbaugh (3) puts
"Crossfire" in the crossfire, and Rev. Michael Taylor
(4) says Dubya was chosen by God. Meanwhile,
Carl Ford and James Kelly (5) do the Taiwan slush-fund shuffle,
Spence Abraham (6) chows down, and Edmund Matricardi III
(7) engages in some (alleged) GOP dirty tricks. Finally, Bush
Administration Officials (10) don't think you're clapping loud
enough! So clap! Louder! And click here for the icons.
Jeb Bush
Itching to pick a fight with Governor Jebbie as he
struggles for re-election this year? Of course you are; we all
hate that guy. Here's a word of advice: you had better not
call the Jebster by name, because you might find yourself
slapped with a nasty lawsuit. You see, he's getting his name
trademarked so nobody else can use it. It all seems innocent
enough: Jeb claims to be upset that a GOP front group,
"Americans for Jeb Bush" shouldn't have the right to use his
name, because people might get confused... So he's
trademarking it. I know what you're thinking: Hey, if Jeb
wants to shut down a Republican group, that's great. Not so
fast there, buckaroo. What happens when some Dems start a
group called "Americans to defeat Jeb Bush"? Once Jeb
Bush(TM) has the legal precedent he wants, do you think he's
going to call off the lawyers when some Democrats try the
same thing? Don't count on it. I'm not real big on conspiracy
theories, but I'm guessing we won't see a very vigorous legal
defense from the folks over at Americans for Jeb Bush.
Right-Wing Warmongers
As the Middle East goes up in smoke and George W.
Bush sits on his ass in Crawford, right-wing warhawks are
lining up to encourage Bush to continue his do-nothing
policies. Bills Kristol and Bennett, the Wall Street Journal,
and the National Review (among others) have recently been
bashing any attempts by the administration - no matter how
pathetic - to restart the peace process as "moral confusion"
and "Clintonite wishful thinking." (Yes, we must end the
nightmare of peace and prosperity!) Of course, Bush's
nonsensical black-and-white "you're either with us or against
us" doctrine is causing a bit of a problem - because now the
same hawks who advocate direct intervention in Afghanistan
and Iraq have suddenly had to shut up when it comes to the
Israel/Palestine conflict. Which just goes to show that the
right-wingnut hawks would rather see endless war in the
Middle East than appear to contradict themselves.
Rush Limbaugh
Some conservatives aren't ashamed to contradict
themselves though, and here's the master: Rush Limbaugh.
Sweatboy had an interesting review of the new "Crossfire" up
on his website last week, a review which would leave even
the most hypocrisy-resistant gagging and clutching at their
throats as they struggled to stay upright. Comments such as,
"These are not broadcasters, folks, they're partisans. They're
childish, immature little kids in a sandbox kicking stuff
around," and, "Do they really think that a bunch of sniveling,
partisan hacks lying through their teeth is going to build a
huge audience?" leave one wondering whether Kaptain Krispy
Kreme has left the planet Earth for good and is now orbiting
a faraway sun somewhere in another dimension. Rush, here's
a mirror. Take a good look in it, and (assuming it doesn't
break) say H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-T-E two hundred fifty times.

Re:What?
Strange, as far as I can remember, Gore never claimed to have invented anything.
-
Re:Yes!!Courage? Let's see...first you accuse me of making up a quote from CNN. I show you the actual CNN transcript. Then, instead of apologizing, instead of admitting that the quote is accurate, you try to change the subject! That doesn't sound courageous to me at all. A truly courageous person would say, "Okay, I'm sorry I accused you of making that quote up."
If you really want to be courageous, go ahead and look at these links (some are pro-Gore, some are anti-Gore) and then admit you're wrong.
Here:
In fact, as CyberAlert readers know, Gore made the boast not at a political gathering but in an interview aired on the March 9 edition of CNN's Late Edition/Prime Time
And here:
...in a March 9 interview on CNN's Late Edition/Prime Time Gore insisted: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
And here:
Several times, George W. Bush and his campaign have questioned Al Gore's credibility. One of their favorite examples is when on 09March 1999, Gore told CNN's Wolf Blitzer....
And here:
During a March 1999 CNN interview, while trying to differentiate himself from rival Bill Bradley, Gore boasted: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
And here:
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet," Gore said during an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer
And here:
In March of 1999 while appearing on a CNN program hosted by Wolf Blitzer, Al Gore briefly alluded to his role in the development of the Internet. This comment became controversial overnight and was used to the former Vice President's disadvantage during the 2000 campaign.
And EVEN here:
March 9, 1999; CNN interview
CLAIM: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
Or, if you still want to believe Gore said "I invented the Internet" during a debate, than go ahead. But I will reserve the right to get pissed off when people like you falsely accuse me of lying.

Re:Digital Media Consumers Rights Act
Yes it is, but Zoe Lofgren's bill was even better. It took aim at shrinkwrap EULAs as well. I hope she re-introduces it. In addition to asking our congresscritters to suppport such bills, we can boycott big businesses opposing them, such as the recording industry. Clear Channel, and the MPAA.
