Re:Not enough publicity
the problem comes from trying to use a low polygon editor to try and make a high polygon model
Catmull-Clark does a wonderful job doing just that.

Re:Reason number one.
You know you can get visual styles for Windows 8, right?
Personally, I like the look of the default Windows 8 desktop and the themes that follow along those lines, such as this one. It's absolutely gorgeous. -

Re: My theory
I think Windows 8 looks a lot better than XP or Vista/7. It finally does away with the gaudy default themes. Windows 8's default visual style is very clean and elegant.
Personally I use this theme for Windows 8. It's very similar to the standard theme, but looks softer. I love how the theme colour changes automatically when the wallpaper changes too. Nice little touch. -

Re:And we care because why?
DeviantArt has a better business model than Instagram. Some lovely content there, too -- much of it available for sale, by content makers willing to work on commission.
Typical example,
http://drfaustusau.deviantart.com/art/The-Call-of-Cthulhu-Cover-276564815
If that doesn't go thru just google for "deviantart cthulhu seuss". If you can't guess, its the HP Lovecraft Call of Cthulhu retold in a Dr Seuss style "for beginning readers" as the cover states.
Pretty awesome by any measure. This in book form would make a pretty interesting

Re:What could possibly go wrong...
Maybe painting them pink would help reduce the number of gun fatalities ?
This suggestion is invalid. Oh, so invalid. Just the weapons of death with pony themes will number in the thousands...

Sunstone (NSFW)
Sunstone by Stjepan Sejic (who goes by both nebezial and shiniez over on deviantArt)
This one's a definite winner for me in three of the four categories (best overall, best art, most relevant), and it's an easy runner up for funniest as well. The strip is really about a bunch of friends and their romantic relationships. The artwork is exceptional, and the story goes far beyond the surface trappings of erotica that are its initial appeal. The strip has a sharp wit and will definite make you look at things related to BDSM in a new light.

Re:Get it from work
He uses regular Bic ballpoint pens (he said so in his DeviantArt page) which is simply amazing. I'm actually a fan of the basic Bic pen. Considering how cheap they are, they're very reliable.
-
Re:Yes
I agree with the use of Rapidograph pens. Dark, thin, and crisp lines. Refillable. My daughter drew this using ONLY a single Size 3×0/.25 Rapidograph pen (before it was scanned and posted on an art site). The character was about 7" high on the paper she drew it on.

Re:Get off my lawn.
Bummer. Link is 404. From the same artist, will you accept Captain America instead? If we want something nerdy, how about Tron? Hellboy?
With everything else from the 80's returning, He-Man must be somewhere in the queue. Then perhaps we could have rule 34 combining the two. Not that that's relevant to my interests. At all.
If you're willing to turn off the TV and read a book, there's always the possibility of doing a mashup with He-Man and popular literature.
(Having seen that, just between you, me, and the rest of the Internet, I'm sticking with the ponies.)

Re:Samson, Suicide Attacker, Killed 3000 CiviliansI didn't say anything about a proof, but merely pointed out that one man's suicide terrorist killing thousands of civilians is another man's Bible hero.
(who wasn't even Christian)
But he is considered a Hero of The Bible, and whilst I doubt that most Christians even realise that he wasn't Christian, the ones that do still go through mental gymnastics to include Samson as one of their own ("Therefore Samson was a Jew and so are you and I if we call ourselves Christians.")
You appear to be arguing that modern Christian fundamentalists are scared of death and martyrdom. Given the history of Christianity, I'm not so convinced that is accurate. "Christians, fear of death, fear of death. The fear of death shows you don't believe.... God needs soldiers to fight so his children may live free. Are you afraid??? I'm not. SEND ME!!!" - Mark David Uhl, a modern fundamentalist. Are you sure you would trust someone like that with a nuclear weapon?

Re:It only did the strokes, not the art
Right. It would be interesting if we could use something like this to train Photoshop filters to get closer to the result we want...
On a side note, one of the example photo conversions on page 7 of the PDF (or here from the third link) has the i-programmer writer commenting "I can't help but think that the bird looks a lot like something from Angry Birds...". That's not an accident: the original source image is this photo of a red cardinal bird, which was photoshopped by DeviantArt user mohamedraoof to look like a "Natural Angry Bird". All three images, the original photo, the deviation, and the sumi-e version look very nice in their own way.

how do you afford your rock and roll lifestyle?
Oh, that's ironic. Not a very effective protest of corporate greed, paying royalties, buying something made in China. Stopping fascism is in large part done by people being aware of their participation in the system and opting out of it. Someone needs to make a free version. Maybe base it off the original. Not the movie version.
Something nicer than some DIY versions.
I suppose you could illegally copy the design...

Ah, here are some more. And another kind.
Or you could base it on a portrait of Guy himself.

Kodak still makes Ektarchrome and Portra, so your argument holds no water there.

Re:Only once have I splurged like that
The original Crysis game (CryEngine2), combined with mods like Real Lifesys (or other extreme tweak mods aka Photoreal), combined with HD textures, and all viewed on 1920x1200 or above res display devices (especially combined with multi-monitor setups), will make your jaws drop.
You really need pure GPU and CPU power to push this stuff over 50 FPS. Whoever tells you otherwise simply hasn't done it.
See...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PivoSi2VvqA
http://www.facepunch.com/threads/714112-Photo-Realistic-Crysis-mod-AKA-Real-Life-sis-Orgasmic-Crysis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPCJh8tYri0
Granted, Crysis has it's problems, but it is far and away better graphics-wise than anything console, or console ported to PC, and it's almost 5 years old now. Console ported games by comparison look a bit "cartoon'ish", even the strange changes they made in the CryEngine 3 to port Crysis to consoles (reduced res and color textures, etc). I'm one of the guys who purposely didn't buy Crysis 2 because I didn't think the graphics were any better than the original Crysis. I've also skipped Skyrim, for the graphics (poor), but also because slaying dragons (and every other creature in the woods that wants to do you in) all day does get old. Why can't Skyrim graphics look as good as this?
or,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTuAw_i7ngII'll tell you why. It's because Skyrim was made for the CONSOLES that came out 5 years ago!
Personally I am a high-end enthusiast. I do run SLI and 1920x1200. I do have an overclocked 4.1 GHz machine. I do upgrade my graphics about every 2 to 3 years. I use my money to push the industry along. I honestly believe that if people quit buying high-end, then the state of the art in GPU/CPU will slow down dramatically and we will never reach pure photorealism as soon. Console designs will also suffer because of it. For example, the nex-gen consoles had better be coming with DX11 capable GPUs and 4+ Gig mem, or for this day in age they would fair poorly. I am the reason that this new AMD graphics card even exists.
I'm the type of person who would buy this...
http://proavmagazine.com/projectors/high-resolution-projector-digital-projection-dvis.aspx
... just to game on cold nights in the winter, so I can hang out on a Crysis style beach projected on my living room wall.Sure, arguments can be made that the "game" is more important than the graphics. That is not entirely true, but it is why I still love a game of the now 11 year old Quake 3 Arena multi-player on occasion. But what I have been craving all my life is pure immersion. I'm an adult, and as such I'm looking not so much for a

Re:No he doesn't
I know, I'm very happy to be in my mid-twenties during the age where the Internet is really exploding and realizing its power. There's are some *fantastic* people who create entertainment on their own and it comes out way better and more interesting than a lot of the crap on the telly. freddiew and Monty Oum come to mind as a couple of standout examples. Then there's there's loads of fun projects like SMBC Theater and 5 second films. There's even more "Mainstream" stuff (Internet-wise) like CrackedTV, CollegeHumor, and FunnyOrDie making original videos. I think in 5 years we'll really be at the point where the stuff on the Internet is as good as (if not more interesting than) the stuff on television.
The only barrier that needs to be broken is the duration of videos. Most of these places will put out 1-10 minutes of content a week. There's very little cohesive shows (like sitcoms or dramas) that I've found that can consistantly produce 20+ 22-minute episodes once a year.
Last recommendation: Next Time on Lonny.
If anyone else knows of any good shows, dramas, whatever hosted online (I'm particularly fond of stuff like Penny Arcade Television as well), please post them here in a reply. I'd love to check out some new stuff. I've almost entirely phased television out of my life.

What a wonderful project!
...and yet, just like the OpenMoko FreeRunner (giant opaque SMedia Glamo blob meant 2d VESA grade graphics only) and the OLPC XO-1 (giant opaque Marvell blob meant the whole WiFi subsystem and "mesh-while asleep" was all a black box and driver couldn't be troubleshot) , all the software is "open" yet obfuscated
The entire Raspberry Pi depends on a gigantic proprietary blob from Broadcom.
Hmm. Google search came up with this deviantart for "Raspberry Blob", maybe this can be the project's mascot. Hooray for undocumented blobs, we don't need source code, maybe we'll get Windows CE for it someday!

Re:Every furry on the planet
Some people make very good looking ones
IMO the biggest advantage would be that realistic fur is much easier to do than realistic skin. Most people haven't seen anything besides cats and dogs from very close, so they'd find it hard to tell when something isn't accurate. Also, unlike with skin, on a cat a good part of what you see is dead, which makes things easier.

Re:Suggested Mascot...
Remember Smokey the bear, the adorable bear who became the public face of anti-forest-fire programs?

Not a bear. A pony.
